I've actually only heard two of her songs until now, plus this one. One was Sadie, and the other was Peach Plum Pear. I got hooked on the last one, and now my last.fm shows 453 plays... 😁

Man, if you’ve already dived into Peach Plum Pear—which honestly blows most people's minds—then you are more than ready for the next level...

Personally, I can't get enough of "The Book of Right-On" and "Sprout and The Bean"... though "Emily" is probably my absolute favorite, that epic one about the meteors... 😵 Every single time someone even mentions a meteor, that track starts playing on loop in my head... And the meteorite is a source of the light, and the meteor's just what we see, and the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee.

I know people are getting hyped about this again, so I’m jumping back in. 🤣 I found Sadie a bit dull at first, and I ended up deciding Joanna was just a one-hit wonder, so I didn't bother digging deeper. I plan on making up for lost time over the next few days. 🙂

Sadie was never really my favorite or anything, but calling her a one-hit wonder?!?!?! That’s straight up blasphemy...🙂

No, it is only prohibited if you state it unconstructively and without any actual argument, which is precisely what you have done.
Perhaps the post would have actually been constructive if everyone had rushed in to debate why this is so unbearable for you and why it couldn't possibly relate to your own life, but—imagine that—they didn't.
It all comes down to the delivery. 🙂

For what it's worth, I find Ys to be the superior album; my attention tends to wander during Milk-Eyed Mender.

I guess some mod decided this was just trolling. 🤷

I think you've got a point there, even though my absolute favorite tracks are from Milk-Eyed Mender, Ys feels like the superior album when you look at the concept... MEM is a little more all over the place.

Who knows how this new record is actually going to turn out. It sounds pretty risky to me, a triple album??? Man... Even though I love Joanna Newsom and this new track is just phenomenal, listening to her and these live recordings, it feels like her voice has shifted a bit, like she’s matured, and the whole thing sounds really promising, but god, a triple album, it'll probably take me five years to fully process it. Especially with the way she writes lyrics. Her language is kind of archaic, plus sometimes the accent makes it a struggle to follow, and she’s basically writing modern-day Iliads and Odysseys. I had to take those older albums in really slowly too.
But regardless, I'm excited. Can't wait for it to drop. 😁

I think SongMeanings is a killer site when you're digging into Joanna... there's this one woman there, Annelise, who puts so much work into interpreting her lyrics.

I'm such a huge fan of Joanna News. Honestly, Milk-Eyed Mender is easily one of my top 10 albums of the decade, and I've gotta say, Peach Plum Pear hits just as hard when it comes to the songwriting. Ys is also absolutely stunning, and her live shows? Pure magic. fuck yeah!

Can you actually back that up? Like, what's the draw for you specifically?

I really don't get the hype around JN, or the whole Banharta thing, none of it. I'm not feeling the music, the vocals, the lyrics, or even the vibe—even if Devendra is a pretty good-looking guy, his whole aesthetic just grates on me.

The entire aesthetic feels totally foreign to me, which is why I mentioned how little it relates to my actual life (in some post that got nuked for whatever reason). (Just so everyone knows, including the mods, that was a nod to the Smiths, not some random attempt to troll this serious thread.)

And there’s always that nagging little doubt in the back of my head that— hold on, driftingeagle27, maybe you just don't get it 😢.

Why shouldn't a person be allowed to express their dislike for something? 😕 Taste is fundamentally a subjective matter rather than an objective debate regarding quality 🙂

I absolutely adore Joanna; her creativity, her vocals, even the harp... I love it all. To this point, Ys stands as one of the finest albums ever produced, and while I haven't yet experienced the new one, I intend to find the time.

Regarding her aesthetic—she is truly beautiful and remains so remarkably consistent in her whimsical, colorful style, appearing much like a forest sprite 😍

I actually found the harpsichord to be the best part. I just cleared my recent queue to listen through everything in order. Now I've reached Peach Plum Pear by Walnut Whales, and honestly, it sounds like a disaster. I'm glad they fixed it later by adding the harpsichord... 😁

I find myself completely enamored with the harp 😍 though, if I am being perfectly honest, the most intriguing element of her entire musical toolkit is actually the saw 😁
