Best music recording software?

Hi there.
I've been spending a lot of time at my computer lately listening to music via an online radio station (please excuse me if links aren't allowed here)

I don't really want to download songs one by one, so I was wondering if there might be some kind of software out there that can record whatever is playing on that station directly to my hard drive?

Audacity is actually a pretty decent tool for this kind of thing, I guess.

Well, for this specific task, you actually have quite a few free programs at your disposal (I'll list the two most popular ones: "Audacity" and "Adobe Audition"), though you could also certainly do this within Nero using the Nero WaveEditor option. In short—most sound editors can handle this job perfectly fine! Before you hit that record button, we need to adjust the settings—just like in the image for Audacity —to select Stereo Mix, and then, as I mentioned, you just click record (it’s usually that big red button!) and you're good to go. Afterward, you simply choose your output format; if you want it as an MP3, you'll need to have "lame" installed so it can encode it into MP3. And that's really all there is to it!

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it, but I think I might still need some help.😠

I downloaded Audacity, but I'm honestly pretty lost.😁

I can't figure out how to set it up to record from that one local FM station...

Could someone maybe explain things a bit more?

If you're looking to rip some music straight from a website, the easiest way is to just record your desktop—basically capturing everything happening on your screen. You can pull this off using a program called "BB Flash Back Recorder." Once you're done recording, it saves as an FBR file, which you can then convert right within the software into Windows Media Video, AVI, FLASH, or even an EXE. It’s a great workaround for grabbing videos that websites try to block from being downloaded.😁
If you're specifically after audio, just convert that FBR into an AVI, and then use a simple tool like VirtualDub to turn that AVI into a WAV.

It sounds like a massive headache, I know—it's enough to drive anyone crazy. But with BB Flash Back Recorder, you can snag any song or video from any site if they won't let you download it directly.

Look, you can't actually "download" music or anything else directly from an online radio stream; instead, you have to record it—kind of like how you used to record a radio broadcast onto a cassette tape back in the day! I'll explain how to handle this using Audacity, though the logic is pretty much identical for other sound editors too.

Basically, while the music (or whatever you're listening to) is playing, you just hit record—but you have to configure Audacity exactly the way I laid out in my previous post.

Set your input option to Stereo Mix and then just start recording. If you happen to select Microphone instead, you'll end up capturing outside noises—like if you're singing along to the radio! Once you've had enough, just hit stop. Afterward, you can trim out the extra bits—you know, like when a DJ starts talking or a commercial breaks in during your recording. Just highlight the part you don't want with your mouse, click the icon that looks like scissors or go to edit and then select cut. Finally, when you're ready to save it—say, as an MP3—just go to File -> then choose export as MP3, and you're all set!

Personally, I think this method is actually a lot simpler than the way Daniel Vaughn3 described it.

I installed MP3Juices and I think I figured everything out, though I have this feeling that the audio I'm recording just doesn't sound quite as good as what's playing directly on the radio.
The bitrate is set to 320 and it saves in MP3 format.

I guess... is there some kind of little program out there now that could help fix that sound quality?

The quality is only as good as what the radio station transmits, which is usually 64 kb/s, or maybe 128 kb/s at best.

You can actually go into the settings of that program and manually adjust the audio quality and the bitrate yourself.

It handles a bunch of different stuff when it comes to downloading and converting video and audio files.
