Every moderator gets close with certain users, so there's definitely a possibility—or you could just suggest via PM that they shouldn't—that a moderator might look out for someone. In your case, that specific moderator might be protecting that person. But at the end of the day, they have to show some teeth and enforce the rules regardless of how friendly things are.

As far as the rules go, we're talking about blatant insults. Like when you call someone a moron, start swearing at their mother, or use heavy profanity. You probably just pushed back a bit too hard against that person, which is why you caught a ban.
For example, back when I got flagged a few times, it was usually for the exact same reason—reacting to what others were doing.
Terms like "idiot" or "moron" might still fly under the radar for the moderators.

Look, this isn't a concrete question.

The admins have a massive pile of actual, real-world problems to deal with, so you can't really expect them to drop everything to play lawyer over hypothetical scenarios. If you want answers, give us something we can work with: a link to the flagged post, a link to the specific report you filed, a PDF screenshot of the incident, or even the name of the moderator you're complaining about. Maybe then you might actually get a response. Right now, you're just asking "what if" questions and clogging up the forums. 🙂
