If someone calls me a "retard" or goes full nuclear with something like "f*** you," I’m reporting them instantly—though honestly, I’d probably throw in a "moron" or "idiot" for good measure myself. If that person then gets posted by the moderator, but I'm the one who ends up getting hit with a strike instead of them, then I'm reporting the moderator without a second thought.

In the future, if this happens to you again and you feel like you've been unfairly penalized (meaning, the other person got off scot-free), report the moderator too if they can't give you a logical reason for why they did what they did.

Gosh... just let me explain what happened. 🙂

The silver lining is that a butterfly is currently fluttering around my head and my cat is chasing it... that’s actually what woke me up, so I hopped online (out of habit, I guess) to see what was happening on Reddit and found a PM from Smartin.

If that butterfly hadn't woken me up, I would have headed to the beach (I properly logged my absence in the moderator section on the General Discussion sub, since I didn't think it was necessary to post in the main moderator hub—I figured it was enough for my fellow General Discussion mods to know that once dawn breaks, I'm traveling 👋) and I wouldn't have seen this for ten days... by which time everyone would probably be up in arms about how rude I am or how I'm neglecting my duties, as usual... typical. 🙂

Anyway... here is the answer. It also serves as an answer for Alex. I'll go into a bit more detail here.

So, what went down yesterday? 🙂

Technically, Alex is writing things correctly, but... I’d like to offer my side of the story.

It isn't true that I refused to answer his PM regarding the warning; the situation was simply... well, don't you guys ever have five or six tabs open with different threads, then get a PM, open it in a seventh tab, and then just want to finish those first few threads before getting to the message when it's finally your turn?
That's just how I browse the site—opening multiple threads at once and working through them in order. I assume most people do the same.

So, that was the situation... I was just going through my tabs one by one... to him, it probably looked like I was intentionally posting on the site while deliberately ignoring his PM. Give me a break.

Yes, I did tell him that You're stupid and Idiot aren't insults.
Yeah, yeah... I said that to him.

Now, let me explain.

Let's look at the bigger picture. Alex is over here loudly asking, Does Reddit allow someone to say you're stupid or an idiot?? Does Reddit allow someone to call someone stupid or an idiot??? I might as well go grab a gun right now if that's the case... 🥳

Hold on a second.

Reddit consists of several different subforums, each with its own set of rules, and considering how many moderators there are, every single one moderates based on their own specific threshold for tolerance and their own subforum rules.
It's the same thing with the chat threads and stuff like that... we definitely allow way more in General Discussion than the mods in the Foodie sub do, for example. Bad comparison, but you get the point.

I come from General Discussion. 👋
Over there, it's allowed (maybe even encouraged) to drop an F-bomb or worse, and nobody even blinks. I'm not sure how those kinds of expressions would fly in the Foodie, Relationships, or Parenting subs...

So, what can I say?
To me, You're stupid and Idiot isn't an insult. It really isn't. Especially not on a forum. And especially not in General Discussion. On top of that, it was in a chat thread where I didn't even bother fixing the multi-quote for Auntie P or handing out warnings for the "smiley face only" posts that I usually warn people about.

Just for comparison (since every moderator has their own level of tolerance), some woman called me a slut yesterday.

Do you all see that?
Look, she even wrote it in all caps—SLUT! 😲
She quoted me and directed it right at me, in big letters.
Good grief.

Did I give her a warning?
I didn't.
To me, that wasn't an insult. 🤣

And since it wasn't, oh well.
Truthfully, it wasn't pleasant to read, and it crossed my mind...What on earth did I do to deserve being called a slut in all caps just because I enjoy watching porn? 😕, though I suppose calling it an insult is accurate... true, it is... but it's one of those permissible insults on Reddit (even if it’s a step above being called stupid or an idiot).

If she had added Fuck you, you slut!... well, then I would have issued a ban.
But just Slut!... that falls under what I consider "allowable" insults on Reddit.
I mean, they're allowable according to my own personal criteria, but some other moderator on Reddit might actually hand out a ban for it.

I don't think people here should be calling each other Dummy, bitch, idiot, but... terms like dummy or idiot aren't really insults to me. As for the word bitch... well, who knows... but in this specific situation, I felt like I could handle it without issuing a ban.

That’s just how I see things and how I categorize certain expressions... and generally speaking, it's true that not all moderators have the same tolerance level, nor are the rules applied identically across every subforum.

Regarding the specific situation... why did this person get a strike while she didn't?

Well, here is what someone else already pointed out... regarding idiot, it seemed to me that Alex responded quite harshly. If someone called me stupid, I would probably just ignore it and not engage in a deeper argument... but since he was trying to "defend" himself, he told her...

Now, let me explain why it's 45 points, considering he was complaining via DM and I replied with the same thing I'm writing here, which the mods will understand better.

The points are assigned automatically based on the level of the offense.
Every moderator knows this... when you issue a strike, there's an automatic point value attached to each penalty. I simply selected insult and, well... boom, 45 points gone.

And what else could I have penalized him for?
For off-topic? Then he'd only get 10 points.

It's just because I'm traveling in the morning and wanted to cover everything so it's perfectly clear.

One more thing.
The reason I'm only replying to this thread now is simply because I didn't see it.
Yesterday afternoon, after the DMs, I thought the dust would settle, so I immediately wrote an explanation in the moderator section of the forum.

Okay, I wasn't very clear in my explanation 😁, I thought this was enough to just provide information... you can go to the moderator corner and see how long I've been around.
Basically, it's not that I was playing favorites; I just left the situation as it was, knowing it might cause a stir, and honestly, whatever.

That's my explanation.
I hope I covered everything.

If you ask me, I'd leave it as is... give Alex a warning, but nothing for princessle.

If things get too heated (I think the mods hazelnut should weigh in... it's reached that point now), then maybe princessle should get a warning too.
Though personally, being called an idiot doesn't really feel like an insult to me.
Just like calling someone a bitch. 🤣

Anyway, that's it.
I spent an hour writing this post; the butterfly around my head stopped flying and even the cat went to sleep... I don't even know if I should try to sleep for another hour or two or just make some coffee and browse the forum...

Tomorrow when I get to the beach, I'll look for some Wi-Fi to see what happened here next. I can't believe it. 🙄

Oh, I just realized this is actually an open thread on Reddit, and most people here aren't moderators. I gave my answer as if I were talking directly to the mods and admins... 🙈

Man, what a way to get out of bed... first that butterfly, and now this thread where I immediately went into full explanation mode. 😁

Well, whatever, let it stay.
It isn't exactly a secret that when a moderator goes on vacation or somewhere without internet access, they give notice. It’s pretty logical. 😁

And it's no secret that moderators discuss their actions amongst themselves, whether it's with other mods or the admins.

I might have gotten a little carried away, but it's fine... I don't think revealing that is such a huge crime. 🤷

Reddit is made up of several different subreddits, each with its own set of rules, not to mention we have tons of mods, and every single one of them moderates based on their own personal threshold for what they'll tolerate.
It's the same deal with the chat rooms and stuff... we definitely allow way more leeway in General Chat than the mods over in the Food & Cooking sub, for example. Bad comparison, but you get it.

Regarding that bolded part... you didn't get it. I didn't mean it in the sense that you were refusing to answer me, but rather once we started messaging. When I asked why you were being so harsh on me (and yeah, I'll throw my hands up in defeat here because I know I overdid it), I kept asking if you were going to penalize her for her insults too. It took me three posts of badgering you before you finally told me, "Whoops, I didn't penalize her. Report that post and we'll see." So I report it, and then you tell me those aren't even insults??😕Hold up a second... so you just saw how I was acting or what I wrote and penalized me by default?? Did you not even look at what led up to it, or the fact that your BESTIE totally crossed the line???

Why am I calling her your bestie? Because as an outsider, it's pretty obvious you two have a closer relationship than everyone else. You even follow each other on Facebook and chat constantly (it's super clear in certain threads where you mention FB), so what am I supposed to think other than you're being biased?

I think it's because you didn't see the whole thing play out. I doubt Princesslea even reported my post; you probably just stumbled onto it, saw that I was insulting your friend (who was totally baiting me beforehand), and slapped me with a penalty without giving her a single warning to stop the insults. She was being aggressive and clearly provoking me, yet she walked away scot-free.

And why are you surprised that I want things to be fair for me too?? This isn't about using profanity, it's about disrespect. And honestly, it's pretty gross to claim that calling someone an "idiot" or "stupid" isn't an insult. On what logic is that not an insult?? What does Reddit have to do with that?? Those are insults and you know it. I don't get why you're defending your friend so fiercely; if you're a moderator, then be unbiased. If you're going to penalize me on a platform where some things are permitted, then penalize her too. Or are you saying I can just wander through Reddit threads and call anyone I don't like an idiot or stupid??

I honestly think things would be fair if I just lost my 45 points, or if Princess Lea got penalized too. Look, it's Les we're talking about—some stuff just flies under the radar with him. It feels like I'm the only one actually getting slapped with a penalty while he gets a free pass for the same thing. If I'm taking the hit, then the person who was actually provoking and insulting people needs to face the music too. This whole setup just doesn't make sense.

Yes, we are friends on Facebook... no, I have never actually met her in person.

I'm not saying biased situations don't happen sometimes (generally speaking on any forum, not necessarily this specific case)... but when they do, I believe we all try to step back and look at things objectively.
At the end of the day, besides me, there are four other moderators who certainly don't have her on Facebook or even know who she is.

Again, I've explained more than enough in the two posts I wrote tonight regarding why these qualify as offenses for a warning and why they don't, and generally how I view these insults.

Yes, it is an insult. You have a right to feel that way.
Just as it was an insult when kurva was directed at me, yet it wasn't penalized.

I think I provided a perfect example of my attempt at being objective by linking the specific insult directed at me. I suspect you'll agree that calling someone a kurva is a bit more heavy-handed than just calling them an idiot.

Again, every moderator has their own approach and their own threshold for what they'll tolerate.
Just because I didn't ban that kurva and idiot doesn't mean, for instance, that a moderator like Strile won't step in when they notice it.

But we are discussing the Sodom and Gomorrah thread, which is a casual chat thread where certain things are more permissible compared to, say, a thread about anal sex.

There is no need to keep repeating yourself.

Personally, I think it would be appropriate if other moderators from Reddit weighed in (just as an opinion), and if they (or the admins) said, "Look, LaTiTeA... you went too far." In that case, I would step back and say, "Fine, you're right... I overstepped, let's fix this based on what the majority agrees is correct."

For now, I have stated my view regarding the limits of these insults and explained how I view them and specifically why I issued your warning. I don't believe I overstepped. 🤷

Honestly, this is more than enough. If the admin thinks otherwise, they can just jump back in on this thread and let us know.

The admin considers calling anyone an "idiot" to be an insult against the entire forum, so he’s slapped 45 points on your account for disrespecting fellow users in that post.

Alex84, next time you start a thread like this—which goes completely against the PŽK subforum rules—your appeal WILL NOT be considered, no matter how right you think you are. Rules exist to be read and followed. There are clear guidelines on how appeals should be formatted, and this thread is a perfect example of what not to do. Be glad Richard Perez3 is feeling generous today and didn't just ban everyone...😉
