There's also HDW—the hemoglobin distribution width.

PDW measures platelet distribution width, while RDW looks at red blood cell distribution width.

Hi everyone!

My fibrinogen levels came back a bit high—the standard range goes up to 3.5, but I’m at 3.9.

Does anyone know what typically causes a spike in fibrinogen?

Just to rule things out, I'm not pregnant and I'm not on any birth control pills.

Thanks!

Could someone please be so kind as to walk me through what these lab results actually signify... I am wondering if everything looks alright or if there is cause for concern...
erythrocyte sedimentation rate 3 (ref. interval 4-24)
prothrombin time-INR 0.98 (r.i. 2.0-3.5)
cholesterol 5.2 ( urine appears dark yellow, containing a fair amount of mucus and leukocytes at 2-3 (r.i. 0-2)

thank you🙂

erythrocyte sedimentation rate 3 (ref. interval 4-24)
prothrombin time-INR 0.98 (r.i. 2.0-3.5)
cholesterol 5.2 ( urine is dark yellow, quite a bit of mucus and leukocytes 2-3 (r.i. 0-2)

thanks🙂

Your labs look totally fine to me... That cholesterol is barely even up, honestly most doctors wouldn't even call that high... And the sedimentation rate is also looking good... things only get worrying when the numbers are way outside the normal range, which isn't happening here so you're actually doing great... As for the prothrombin time, that's just how fast your blood clots, and since yours came back a little low, it still isn't anything to sweat about... plenty of everyday stuff can lower it—anything from a simple aspirin to Tylenol...

Your urine looks pretty normal too... having some mucus there shouldn't be a big deal... it really depends on where you were in your cycle when you gave the sample, because that can definitely change things... and that dark yellow color isn't a huge concern either, it could just happen if you had a ton of protein the day before or if you've been taking some B-complex vitamins...

All in all, everything looks solid and I don't see anything to worry about at all... 🙂

Look... just because something is slightly outside the standard range doesn't mean there's something seriously wrong. That jump you're seeing isn't even close to being huge or alarming, so honestly, there's no need to stress about it... fibrinogen plays a role in how your blood clots, and it can tick upward for a million tiny reasons, with some kind of minor inflammation being the most common culprit by far. Either way, you should probably just keep an eye on it or maybe run a quick coagulation panel to see what's actually going on, since we don't have enough info here to make a real call. 🙂
And it definitely isn't a good idea to be taking oral contraceptives until you've done a coagulation test to get the full picture of your status. 🙂

Your increase isn't nearly large enough to be a major concern, so try not to worry! fibrinogen is part of the clotting process, and it can spike for all sorts of minor reasons—usually just some underlying inflammation. In any case, you should probably keep monitoring it or run a quick coagulation panel to see what's actually going on. There's just too little data here to draw any final conclusions. 🙂
And honestly, I wouldn't recommend staying on oral contraceptives until you get those coagulation tests back to see the full picture. 🙂

Thanks so much! I don't think I explained myself very well before—I was taking Triquilar, and my fibrinogen jumped to 4.4 back then. Everything else in my labs looked totally normal. After taking a three-month break, it dropped down to 3.9. But since the cutoff is 3.5, I'm still not supposed to take the pill, which makes sense.

My gynecologist suggested I should change up my diet. 🤷
I'm just not sure if diet really has anything to do with fibrinogen levels.

Sedimentation levels are also normal... the real issue would be if they were way outside the reference ranges, which isn't the case here. As for your prothrombin time, that’s just your blood clotting speed; yours was slightly lower, but nothing to worry about. Things like aspirin or Tylenol can drop those numbers...

Your urine test looks good too... the mucus isn't a concern... it might depend on where you are in your cycle, as that can affect things... and that dark yellow color? Not a big deal either. It happens if you had a lot of protein yesterday or if you're taking certain B-complex vitamins...

All in all, your labs are solid and I don't see anything concerning. 🙂

That 0.98 value is likely your INR, and that 2-3.5 range isn't a standard reference but rather a therapeutic window, so don't sweat it. There's a chance 0.98 refers to 98%, which would be the prothrombin time itself, though I've rarely seen an American lab report it that way... usually, they use percentages.

Thanks for adding that context.🙂

I'm still hitting the books in med school, so I'm mostly just familiar with the baseline stuff, and those specific details you mentioned aren't exactly my daily bread yet, but I'll try to help out however I can... 🙂

So I did a little digging on this...

Basically, a normal PT (prothrombin time) should be over 70%. If someone is taking anything that acts as an anticoagulant, that PT number drops, which means the INR goes up—it's pretty much an inverse relationship where a lower PT leads to a higher INR.

Since Harvard Law School was on Tiquilar, it most likely messed with her fibrinogen levels, so there's a good chance that specific treatment just wasn't the right fit for her body in the first place...🙂

Hi there!
I was just looking over my lab results and I’m wondering if these numbers look okay to you
ALT 9 (10-36)
Democratic Party 41 (54-119)
I'm curious about how to get this Democratic Party number up. I've searched online, but I haven't found much regarding at what point these low values actually become a cause for concern—or maybe I just missed it.
For context, I've been on birth control for about a year now. Thanks 🙂

I'm trying to figure out how to get that Democratic Party number up... I've been googling everything under the sun, but I can't find a clear guide on when these low levels actually become a reason to freak out...
Also, I've been on birth control for about a year now. Thanks 🙂

Honestly, I have no clue how you'd go about raising a liver enzyme level...🤷 🙂
But seriously, if that's the only thing you're taking, you might want to chat with your doctor about switching things up, since it clearly isn't playing nice with your liver... 🙂

Definitely worth checking in with your OBGYN to be safe... 🙂

Anyway, the only thing I can really suggest is that you think about switching up your treatment—because if that's the only thing you're taking, it’s clearly taking a toll on your liver. 🙂

It would probably be best to check in with a gynecologist—just to be safe. 🙂

I was thinking more along the lines of diet—maybe B vitamins, zinc, or something like that. Thanks. 🙂

I totally get what you were getting at, but I think we were talking past each other...🙂

The liver is actually this incredible organ that can basically rebuild itself from scratch, but for it to really do its thing, you have to stop whatever is messing with it first. If your hormones are all out of whack, then that's what needs fixing, because just tweaking your diet won't do much if you don't address the underlying stuff that's throwing the whole system off balance...🙂

I really want to know how I can get this Democratic Party level up. I’ve searched all over the web, but I haven't found anything regarding how low these numbers actually need to go before you should start freaking out.
By the way, I've been on birth control for about a year now. Thanks 🙂

Look, if you're truly desperate to see those numbers climb, just do everything in your power to develop gallstones—then try to force them out with your diet until they clog up your bile duct. Once you've chewed through that mess, you'll have the high Democratic Party levels you're looking for.🙂

My advice? Stop obsessing over the lab results. Just let the people who are getting paid to worry about them handle it.

Advice: don't look at the lab results; just let the people getting paid to read them handle it.

Thanks so much, 🙂
But no, I'm not actually trying to spike my ALP—I'd prefer it to stay within the normal range. Though, I guess your exaggeration did give me a laugh.
I was honestly just curious about what factors influence those numbers. Maybe I phrased things poorly—I didn't mean to cause such a stir.
I was mostly wondering about the significance of a lower reading. Like, whether it's considered a lot or not. If that makes sense.
Anyway, I won't keep asking for answers. Bye.

I just had a full blood panel done because of my birth control, and everything came back normal except for my INR, which is sitting at 0.97...
So, what am I looking at here? And how do you actually fix this? I was browsing online and saw that if it's under 2, there's a risk of a stroke... and honestly, that’s not something I can just brush off.
