Trip Report: Canada (Montreal) - June 8, 2008

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg aren't just colorblind; they’re basically flying blind at this point 🙄 I might be misremembering the angle, but if I recall correctly, there was enough room on Kimi Raikkonen's left side for a small convoy to pass through, so if our "golden boy" couldn't manage to slot in, he could have at least steered the damn thing slightly to the side. Honestly, keeping an F1 car under control at 50 miles/h 🙄
is apparently asking too much for some people.
Anyway, kudos to BMW—I really hope they maintain this momentum through the rest of the season because I am dying to see a real title fight between Raikkonen-Massa-Kubica 😉

edit: okay, I just went back and rewatched the replay: it wasn't even a question of whether another F1 car could squeeze past Kimi Raikkonen; there was enough space for two semi-trucks to pass him comfortably 🙄 Lewis Hamilton 🙂 🤣

edit: watched the replay again: it wasn't even a matter of finding space for an F1 car next to Raikkonen; there was enough room for two massive Mack trucks to pass him 🙄 Lewis Hamilton 🙂 🤣

Two trucks? 😕 It's not like Lewis Hamilton is the only one struggling with his vision ☕

There just wasn't enough room to breathe—not that he couldn't have avoided it if he'd been more careful—but he came flying out of the pits, Kimi slammed on the brakes, and then Lewis swerved left at the last second, and all it takes is one tiny little tap to wreck the front end, and just like that, it's over. 🤷

To top it all off, they're handing him a 🤷 10-place grid penalty for the next race.

Look, Sirin's F1 car is maybe 180 cm wide. There is easily over 4 meters of open pavement on the left side. I honestly have no idea what kind of narrow backroads you're driving on if you actually think two trucks couldn't pass that thing with room to spare.☕

It's the truth, honestly, it's wild how much dumber racing feels without our favorite little guy around. These two watching this second race act like they're seeing a car for the first time. They clearly don't even have a clue what a red light in the pit lane actually means.

Sirin's F1 car is only about 6 feet wide, and looking at the shot, there's easily over 13 feet of open road on the left side. I honestly have no idea what kind of narrow backroads you're driving on if you actually think two semi-trucks couldn't pass each other on this stretch without a problem. ☕

I mostly just hop in a helicopter anyway, though I do hit the highways every now and then.

Both drivers will start the next race—the French Grand Prix at Magny Cours in two weeks—ten spots lower than where they qualify.

Here’s exactly why I’m saying Nick Heidfeld basically handed that win over to Kubica:
1. Heidfeld letting Kubica through right after the pit stop was a massive gamble. They risked losing Heidfeld's spot to Alonso because he could have easily sliced right past him.
2. Heidfeld slowing down just enough to let Kubica break away from Alonso.
3. Risking Heidfeld's second-place finish by calling him in for a stop that allowed Alonso—who was clearly faster—to catch up. Who knows what times Alonso would've clocked if he hadn't been held back? There was a real chance he would've come out right on Heidfeld's tail.
4. Telling Heidfeld to let Alonso pass might actually be a first in Formula 1 history. I can't think of any other precedent for something like this. Having Alonso behind him was a huge advantage for Heidfeld to secure at least P2, and keeping him back only limited Alonso's chances at that second spot.
5. The team openly telling Kubica exactly how many fast laps he needed to stay ahead of Heidfeld.
6. All that cheering in the BMW garage when Kubica zipped through the pits into first place. If they didn't care which of their two "equal" drivers took the win, they wouldn't have been celebrating like Kubica had just overtaken a Ferrari instead of his own teammate.
7. That sour look on Heidfeld's face after the race. The guy knew exactly what was happening to him.

Just try being objective for once. Regardless of how much you root for Kubica, you've gotta admit that win was gifted to him...

Look, I'm happy Kubica won and took the lead in the standings. Out of the current title contenders—Hamilton and those two Ferraris—he's the one I'd most love to see crowned champion at the end of the season. I think BMW's move was smart since it's their only way to stay in the championship fight, but let's be real: that was Heidfeld's race to lose.

Yeah, I'm with you on that....

Maybe from where we're sitting it looks weird, but an F1 car doesn't have the same steering angle as a regular car on the street, and the braking isn't quite the same either. If you actually watch closely, even though it was late, he did turn the wheel all the way and hit the brakes, it's just that timing was off. 🤷

Honestly, I think this 10-spot penalty is just totally ridiculous...

Because if we’re being real here, look at someone like DC—he causes crashes two times in a row and nobody says a word. 🤷
