James Cameron's Sanctum (2010)

After the massive success of Avatar, James Cameron's name has become a massive selling point. It’s no surprise then that this project produced by Cameron is being marketed everywhere as "James Cameron's Sanctum"—it's a blatant move to grab audiences, even though Alister Grierson actually directed it. They're also using the inevitable 3D hook to pull people in. Since Sanctum was shot using the same camera tech as Avatar, we can at least expect the 3D visuals to be top-tier.
Based on everything we've seen so far (the trailer, posters, and stills), the look of this movie definitely gives off The Abyss vibes. Except, there aren't any aliens or sea monsters here. The story is supposedly based on a true story involving one of the screenwriters, Andrew Wightu, who and 14 others got trapped in a cave after the entrance collapsed, forcing them to scramble for a new way out.
The cast isn't packed with huge stars, aside from the two leads you might recognize from other hits: Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four 1 & 2) and Richard Roxburgh (Van Helsing). The budget sits at $30 million, and it's set to hit theaters in February 2011.

The 3-D action-thriller Sanctum follows a team of underwater cave divers on a treacherous expedition to the largest, most beautiful and least accessible cave system on Earth. When a tropical storm forces them deep into the caverns, they must fight raging water, deadly terrain and creeping panic as they search for an unknown escape route to the sea. Master diver Frank McGuire has explored the South Pacific's Esa-ala Caves for Months. But when his exit is cut off in a flash flood, Frank's team-including 17-year-old son Josh and financier Carl Hurley are forced to radically alter plans. With dwindling supplies, the crew must navigate an underwater labyrinth to make it out. Soon, they are confronted with the unavoidable question: Can they survive, or will they be trapped forever?

I have to say, the premise itself sounds pretty captivating... you've got those deep underwater caves and all that exploration... I suppose we'll just have to wait and see how they actually pull it off visually.

I really need to catch up; there was a premiere screening for the movie yesterday...

I just finished watching it.

It was an okay flick, pretty interesting though. Since Radjen based it on some true story/event, it definitely adds a layer of intrigue to the whole plot.

The directing and the acting were solid—honestly, you could even say they were really good—but I still can't help feeling like the whole thing could have been pushed a little further to be truly great.
Since I wasn't familiar with this specific incident beforehand, I'm not entirely sure if the movie stayed true to the facts or if they took a lot of liberties with how things actually went down.

All in all, I walked away feeling pretty satisfied with the experience.
If you don't go in with crazy high expectations, you'll probably find yourself enjoying it; definitely worth a watch in my book. 👍

The movie is alright... it drags a bit at the start, but it picks up and ends up being pretty solid once you get into it. The visuals and special effects are really well done...

There's this documentary out there called Nullarbor Dreaming.
I can't find him anywhere. Honestly, it’s like fifteen people were trapped in a cave for two days straight and somehow nobody even ended up dead.

Watched this with my wife last night. Honestly, the movie was terrible—I just couldn't get into it at all. The only redeeming quality is that there are so many ridiculous scenes you can basically just laugh at them. If it were actually a comedy, it might have worked; even some moody emo kid would have fit right in as one of the leads 🙂 "American asking Deep under" 😁

I'm with you on that. It's pretty bad.

It completely killed the momentum halfway through. Honestly, I have no idea how Cameron was even allowed to let his name be attached to this mess.

Supposedly top-tier quality, but honestly? A total slog to sit through.

For me, the biggest struggle was definitely the acting. It honestly felt a bit amateurish, almost like watching something out of Shark vs Octopus or Attack of The Sabretooth.
I’ve seen much higher production values in random documentaries

but I have to say, the story itself isn't half bad.

I honestly had to force myself to sit through the whole movie... It wasn't even funny 🤷
