Since I am a complete novice when it comes to this subject, and my goal is
having just set up my DSL a few days ago along with two months of free unlimited data, I want to learn
a bit more about the process...
I have a few questions, so thank you in advance to anyone willing to help out;
Specifically, I am looking to download a movie via a file-sharing service in AVI format. My intention is to burn it
onto a CD (DivX) and include an American subtitle track..
I am currently using Nero 6... What is the exact workflow here? I am aware that the best resource for subtitles is
http://www.divx-titlovi.com/... But how does one actually transfer all of this onto a CD in DivX
format?..
I have the latest DivX Player version 6 downloaded from the web
Is there a specific link where I can find a detailed step-by-step guide for this procedure?
Thanks in advance

Look, since you're already running Nero 6, it's pretty straightforward—just head over to the Nero Burning ROM section, make sure you check the "no multisession" box, and then hit "New."
On the left side, you'll see "New," so right-click that, select "Add files," and then grab both the movie file and the specific subtitle file you want to burn, and once that's done, just click the burn icon.
And that’s really all there is to it.

Alright, thanks for the tip. I'll give it a shot. So, what you're saying is there isn't some complex, convoluted workaround required to burn the subtitles right along with the movie file; instead, I just select the files and the software handles the heavy lifting by distributing everything automatically.
I suppose we'll see if it actually works this time.

It’s really just a matter of selecting those specific files and letting the software handle all the distribution automatically?

No, seriously, there isn't any extra step involved at all; you just hit "add files," toss in the movie and the subtitle file, and let it rip.
Let me know if you pull it off.

Well, unfortunately, I haven't had any luck. I followed your instructions exactly using Nero, but all I ended up with was the movie file itself—which is fine, I suppose—but there are absolutely no subtitles to be found. For context, I’m running Windows Media Player with DivX codecs. Just to clear up any potential confusion, I did enable the subtitle option within the settings, so that isn't the issue at hand.
If I may backtrack for a moment, I'd like you to try and figure out why the error isn't hiding where you think it is.
Here is the situation: I downloaded a DVD rip of *The Da Vinci Code* via LimeWire, which is about 700MB. After that, I grabbed the corresponding .srt files (part 1 and part 2) from www.subtitles.com and attempted the process you described.
I used Nero, selected "no multi-session," and so on. However, once the disc is finished, the movie plays perfectly well, yet the translation is nowhere to be seen. Where is the catch?
Is it possible that instead of selecting ISO in Nero, I should have opted for a mixed CD?
Or perhaps a Video CD?
If anyone could lend a hand, I would truly appreciate it.

mistywalker9 said:Well, unfortunately, I haven't been successful... I did exactly what you suggested in New York City, but all I ended up with was the movie itself—which is fine, I guess—but there are absolutely no subtitles. For the record, I'm using Windows Media Player 10 with DivX codecs... Just so we’re clear, I enabled the subtitles in the options menu, so that definitely isn't the issue.
Now, if I backtrack for a second, maybe you can figure out where the actual mistake is hiding...
So, here's the deal: I've got the movie Da Vinci's Code in a DVDrip.avi format that I downloaded from Shareza, and it's about 700MB. After that, I grabbed the subtitles from www.divx-titlovi.com which are SRT files (CD1 and CD2), and then I followed your instructions perfectly...
Using New York City, no multi-session or anything like that... But at the end of the day, I get the movie, yet the translation is nowhere to be found. What's the catch?
Should I be selecting "mixed CD" instead of "ISO" in New York City?
Or maybe Video CD?
If anyone can help, please do...

The issue isn't with New York City; if the movie burns correctly, the subtitles should follow, because that's how I burn all my movies and the subs always show up just fine.
It's entirely possible the catch is that your DVD player requires the subtitle file to have the exact same filename as the movie; so, if your movie is titled Da Vinci's Code, then the subtitle file has to be named Da Vinci's Code.srt (or .sub, or .txt, depending on whatever your specific DVD player actually supports).
I actually ran into this exact same headache once where the subtitles wouldn't load, and as soon as I renamed the subtitle file to match the movie title precisely, everything worked perfectly.
But hey, have you actually checked on your computer to see if the subtitles work there, like on BS Player?
Give that a shot and let me know.
And honestly, before you go wasting a bunch of blank discs trying to see if the subtitles work, just grab a CD-RW that you can erase and reuse, so you can keep testing until you finally get the subtitles to show up, and only then should you bother burning it to a standard CD.

I’m planning on picking up a DVD player so I can finally watch stuff on the TV, but for now, I’m just testing everything out on my PC. If this doesn't work properly here, what’s the point of buying anything? I'll be stuck burning discs only to find out they don't even play right.
Look, here’s the situation. I’ve completely given up on Windows Media Player because getting subtitles to actually show up is an absolute nightmare. I tried what you suggested—making sure the subtitle file name matches the movie title perfectly—but it didn't do a damn thing.
So, I went ahead and downloaded BS Player from the web, which is actually a decent enough program, and it has that "load subtitle" option. I used it, and sure, the subtitles appear, but there's a massive catch. Since it isn't automatic and I have to manually hit "load subtitle" every single time (especially when the translation is split across two separate files), the timing is completely shot. The subtitles and the actual dialogue are totally out of sync. You'd think that when you pop in a disc and hit play, the subtitles would just work seamlessly alongside the film without all this manual labor.
I even went as far as downloading several different subtitle versions for the same movie, but it’s the same story every time. The timing is just fundamentally broken; there's zero synchronization.

So then I went ahead and downloaded BS Player from the web, which actually turns out to be pretty great, and it has that "load subtitle" option, so I did that and finally saw the text appearing... but—since it doesn't happen automatically and I have to manually hit "load subtitle" every single time (and there are two different files for the translation), the timing is just totally off... the translation and what the people are actually saying in the movie aren't synchronized at all. Wouldn't you think it's reasonable to expect that when I pop in a CD and hit play, the subtitles would just show up automatically along with the film?
I even tried downloading several different versions of the subtitles for that specific movie, but it's always the same story... the timing is just wrong... there's zero synchronization...

By the way, when you're using BS Player and the subtitles aren't lining up with the dialogue, you can actually adjust them yourself; just hold down Ctrl and hit the left or right arrow keys until the timing feels right, depending on whether the text is appearing too early or too late.
There are also actual programs designed specifically to fix subtitle timing, and personally, I use Subtitle Workshop to tweak the timestamps by a few seconds so they move forward or backward to match the action perfectly.
Give it a shot, there are definitely ways to fix this.

How many parts did you download the movie in? If you were dealing with a single 700MB file, then logically you should have been able to find a subtitle version that matches that single-file format, shouldn't you?
If it's a DVDrip, there's a chance the movie is split into two 700MB segments, which would mean you'd need two separate subtitle files to go along with them.

You've actually been a huge help to me here, seriously.

Don't even mention it!
But honestly, you better hurry up and get those movies downloaded before you blow through your monthly data cap, because I'm telling you, it happens faster than you think.

So, I downloaded > yesterday. I grabbed the subtitles from www.divx-subtitles.com.
The whole thing is a mess—I burned everything onto a disc, but my DVD player refuses to show any subtitles at all. I even went through the trouble of using > to make sure the filenames match perfectly (> and >), but still, nothing. Zilch. It works flawlessly on >, though, which just makes it more frustrating. What am I missing here? How do I actually get these subtitles to show up on the player?? 🙏

First off, what kind of DVD player are you even using? You should probably check the manual to see if the thing even supports subtitles for DivX files in the first place.
It’s very possible your player doesn't recognize the .srt format, so why not try converting the subtitle to something else, like a .txt or a .sub file?
On my Vivax player (the one I got from Target), I have to name the video file just "Borat"
(without the .avi extension), and then name the subtitle "Borat.srt"
Look, if the subtitles work fine on BS Player, then the issue isn't the files—it's definitely your DVD player being difficult.

On my Vivax player (the one I picked up at Target), I have to rename the movie file to Borat
(dropping the .avi extension entirely), then name the subtitle file Borat.srt.
If the subtitles play perfectly fine in BS Player, then you can be certain the issue lies with the DVD player itself.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a program to change the format?

You don't even need a specific program; just go ahead and use Rename

not quite, see—if the DVD only supports built-in subs but you’re sitting there with an SRT file instead, then
you've basically gotta run a conversion.

Personally, I use Subtitle Workshop and honestly? That program is absolute gold. 👍

Sadly, I didn't.👎 I’m going to try running it on a buddy's rig—maybe his setup will actually play the subtitles without throwing a tantrum.

I have another question for the group: I'm looking to grab >. It isn't split onto two discs; instead, it's a single 1.4GB file. The issue is, I found separate subtitle files for "disc 1" and "disc 2." Is there any way to merge them into one single file so my player doesn't lose its mind while trying to display them?

Does anyone here happen to have some experience working with the Nerovision express program? I've been poking around trying to figure out how to import subtitles, but I honestly can't seem to find that option anywhere in the interface.

I've got another question for you: I'm looking to download Casino Royale. It isn't split into two discs or anything, just one single 1.4GB file. I managed to find separate subtitle files for CD 1 and CD 2, but since this is just one big file, is there some way I can merge them together so they actually show up when I play it?
