He hasn't actually left yet—you'll still see him around, just less frequently. And honestly, the show wraps up pretty soon after he exits anyway.

aha, okay then....

I don't think I ever actually catch the exact moment someone leaves.... is there like a big departure scene, or do they just mention he's gone?

There's a scene.

I happened to stumble upon this series last night.
I absolutely loved watching it when I was a kid.
And honestly? It holds up beautifully even now.

Honestly, this show is incredible—it pulls you right into the plot, and all your stress just vanishes for those 45 minutes. Plus, having a character wander through that small town? Total perfection for my personal taste.

That’s exactly what I’m getting at—it’s the one question that always stuck in my head. Even back when I first started watching the series, I kept wondering what would happen once his contract finally ran out.😁😁

And where is he actually living now? Just tucked away in some cabin deep in the woods... how did he even end up there, and what was the motivation? I couldn't quite wrap my head around it during the original run all those years ago, and honestly, even watching the reruns now, it still escapes me...

I have a feeling I won't be seeing that specific scene anytime soon, even twenty years from now.😂

I haven't seen anything quite like this—before or since—done with this level of craft. Honestly, it’s got me feeling a bit cynical about the future... I'm starting to fear we might never see anyone capture lightning in a bottle like this ever again.

I think that scene is about four episodes away. It should be in episode 6.15, since we're currently around 6.11 or something like that. It’s such a great scene 🙂>
As for why he's at the cabin, it's because he left Maggie after they broke up... she told him they couldn't live together, so he left Cicely and headed toward the river near those Native American tribes or whatever. Then he arrived and told her everything about what happened with Maggie

"The Quest" was on Monday, I think. Yesterday was episode 16, where Maggie visits him and she keeps hallucinating Fleischman dying😁 (from falling rocks, from fire, even from a fighter jet🤣 )

This series is an absolute masterpiece. It’s a complete, immersive experience, much like watching The 10th Kingdom. Everything feels plucked straight from a damn fairy tale—that little town where everyone is your friend and life is just perfect. There isn't any crime, no violence, and no one is out to get anyone else. Even though the show lacks a coherent sense of logic, you won't find a single boring episode; in fact, that total lack of sense is exactly what makes it so captivating.

It might not be related to the NE, but it definitely involves Morrow's products, so please go ahead and sign 🙂

Yes... I’ve actually given that quite a bit of thought myself. 😢 But then again... there is something undeniably fairytale-like about it all, isn't there? If you possess enough imagination and simply allow yourself to get swept up in the whimsy, it works just fine. 🙂 I don't know... at the end of the day, I find it acceptable because the series itself was always defined by those sudden twists and that heavy layer of subtext—those stories where everything is a metaphor for something deeper. That is how I have always interpreted it.
Regarding his arc... I actually found it quite compelling how he felt this inexplicable, almost magnetic pull to uncover that "something." In reality, he was merely confronting the very thing he had been subconsciously chasing all along: New York City. If anyone else had looked toward that "city," they likely would have seen a reflection of their own deepest desires. (Though, I suppose Maggie doesn't count in that regard, since she was acting as his companion, making the journey feel uniquely "his.") And now, looking at that departure scene—it feels so surreal, almost detached from any literal reality. 🙂 We aren't naive; we aren't foolish enough to believe he can actually just walk away like that. 🙂 So, yes, that is my take on the whole thing. 😉

I told you guys this whole scene was going to feel surreal—then again, the entire series is basically a fever dream.

It’s all about the symbolism, obviously. It’s not like Joel just happened to wander through town and suddenly find himself standing in front of the Statue of Liberty while Marilyn whispers "goodbye." 😁 dustytinker11 hit the nail on the head here; everything is intentional. New York City is his destiny, and that’s where he belongs.

When I first started watching, I knew deep down he wasn't going to end up with Maggie. I could see it coming from a mile away because he’s always going to crave New York, and she’s never going to leave Alaska... which means they're headed for different lives, and she'll eventually move on with someone else. 🙂

That said, Maurice and Barbara are easily my favorite couple in the whole show. 😍

So be it. 😍

Given the current state of the world, we could use a little escapism.

I wouldn't mind revisiting a series like this. Provided there is a reasonable amount of time between viewings, of course.🙂

This is easily one of my all-time favorite series—just a total classic. Since moving to Finland recently, I made sure to bring the first four seasons along with me. It felt like a perfect pairing: Alaska vibes mixed with the Finnish landscape. Snow, cold weather, saunas... it’s a mood. And honestly, watching this while it’s actually snowing outside today? Pure bliss.

I remember catching this on NBC back in the nineties. I absolutely loved it. Ah, those were the good old school days... 🙂

The show is timeless, no question about it. It captures the essence of people from the North perfectly, whether we're talking about Alaska or somewhere else entirely. At times, it gets incredibly cool and artsy—reminiscent of Tim Burton, Jim Jarmusch, or Aki Kaurismäki 🙂—and I'm realizing all over again just how special it is now that I've started organizing these late-night marathons 🙂

I honestly couldn't wrap my head around it at first—just couldn't get it—but after giving it one last look, I finally realized it’s actually pretty damn good. I'm definitely planning on picking up some DVDs. : )
