Dark City vs. The Matrix

Which one of these movies do you guys think hits harder?

To me, Equilibrium is the superior choice 🙂)) 👍

Between those two, I find the first one, Matrix be a legend, much more striking... though I do have an appreciation for Gotham City too. I could watch endless variations on that theme; that kind of cinema really appeals to me...

God, those eyes and eyebrows of hers are stunning (though I doubt most guys are paying attention to her brows...🙂). That scene where she sings "Sway" in the bar? Pure perfection.
As for the poll, who knows? I respect both. They both have their own particular charm, don't they?👍

The first Matrix remains an absolute original. Equilibrium was surprisingly good, and Dark City? That one has some serious depth! 👍

Based on the poll, Gotham City takes the win. It’s pretty wild when you look at the numbers—even though both movies dropped back in '98 and '99, The Matrix pulled in $171,383,253 here in the USA, while Gotham City only managed $14,337,579.
Equilibrium did even worse, barely scraping together $1,203,974 in the USA.

It is quite interesting to note that despite both films being released in '98 and '99, The Matrix earned $171,383,253 in the US, while Gotham City brought in only $14,337,579.

You know as well as I do that box office numbers don't define a movie's quality. Just look at how much Fight Club made compared to its budget. Even though The Matrix "borrowed" a few concepts from Gotham City, my vote still goes to The Matrix; it simply had a much larger impact. As for the sequels, let's not even go there..

Equi might actually be better than The Matrix for me—it's certainly more serious—but if we're judging strictly by revenue, you're telling me it would be 150x inferior? Give me a break... 🙂

I still have this vivid memory of heading out to catch The Matrix in theaters... during the drive, I remember hearing Chemicals' "Hey Girl, hey boy" playing on the radio for the first time, and once we pulled up to the cinema and saw the massive crowd gathered outside, a friend joked, "Someone get me a Redeemer!"😁 (It was back in '99; we were just teenagers, completely caught up in the hype of the Unreal Tournament film! 🙂 🙏 🤣 )

I distinctly recall sitting there thinking that the visual effects in that movie were on an entirely different level compared to anything I had ever seen before. When Neo finally takes down Smith and then that bizarre leg movement happens right after he "clears" things, I honestly assumed the whole sequence was just computer-generated. 😁 However, given that they were navigating a digital realm, I was actually expecting more drastic shifts in the city's topology—something akin to what happens in Dark City, but perhaps overlaid with more green code scrolling by as the environment warped. It just didn't go that way... 😢 😁
