Maybe we should take a second to ask ourselves who the actual victim is here, and who the tormentor might be.

Fine then.. NP Manu Chao - Lost City. Let's see if there aren't any Rolls-Royce smiley faces popping up about it. β
Ontopic:
You guys went a little overboard on the other threadβitβs not about whether we respect people whose music taste we hate, itβs about whether we respect their taste itself. π Those are two totally different things.
And why? Because it happens to be my favorite. I might respect someone else's picks if they overlap with mine, but otherwise, anything they feed me feels like a direct assault on my ears. π

I honestly think the whole foundation of a breakup boils down to one thing: "respect."
I mean, look, gentlepuma20 definitely respects me because I listen to some underground band sheβs never even heard of, but that doesn't mean she's suddenly gonna start blasting them through her headphones.

Well, let's just say I have plenty of respect for the musical tastes of stormyviper11 and Daniel Bailey7, even if their selections are... well, extremely questionable.π

The problem is, I actually do.

Things got a little heated over on the other threadβitβs not about whether we like the people weβre talking about, itβs about whether we respect their taste in music. Thereβs a massive difference there.π
Exactly. For instance, I can respect someone's musical taste without actually respecting them as a person. All this arguing is just useless noise.π¬

Laura Long5 said:Look, I gotta say, I respect the musical taste of stormyviper11 and Daniel Bailey7... even if it is absolutely trash... π
Yeah, I guess thatβs basically what it boils down toβrespecting someone else's taste in music. Honestly, I don't even feel like throwing a compliment back at you. I'll just point out that there are plenty of people on here whose musical tastes are lightyears away from mine, but I still respect them. Two prime examples would be Massimo, since I can't stand funk and jazz makes me break out in hives, and Jason Chavez32, because if he posted 80% of the stuff he puts on NP, Iβd probably hate every second of hearing it... What I really can't stand, though, are the posers. You know the typeβpeople who absolutely die of envy because someone else picked up a new album or discovered a cool band before they did. They immediately rush to download everything just to dump it on NP, all so they can pretend they were "in the know" all along...
I honestly have zero respect for people who don't let music actually mean something to them. You know the typeβthey just cycle through whatever's sitting at the top of the Billboard charts or stick strictly to the classic hits everyone already knows. Itβs like theyβre letting some algorithm or a radio DJ dictate their entire personality instead of actually feeling the sound... And don't even get me started on girls who swap out their entire playlist every single time they switch boyfriends. Like, one day you're into indie rock, the next you're suddenly obsessed with whatever the new guy is blasting in his Jeep. It's exhausting to watch. Sorry if that sounds a bit chauvinistic, I guess, but honestly, it's a trait I've only ever really noticed coming from guys...
Look, I don't try to force my music taste on peopleβwell, at least not all the time. If I'm hanging out with a group and they start playing Massimo or Bruce Springsteen, I'll just vent about it here on the forum later, but I'll let my coworker play their stuff. Same deal at work; I'm not gonna blast Zoviet Franc or Thermalse while I'm on the clock because I know itβd probably drive my colleagues nuts... I'll just stick to something a bit more "palatable," like Calexico.

Honestly, I couldn't agree more with Carol...
Even though I know I should probably be more open-minded about other people's tastes, since my own isn't perfect either.π’ π³

Don't bother apologizing for being a chauvinist. If you're actually saying sorry, it usually means one of two things:
you're packing a tiny
or
you've had way too many Kset beers

Well, I wasn't even in Kset... π¬

Hmm, hmm... bitterness? You might have misread the room there. π
stormyviper11 said:I honestly can't stand girls who swap their entire musical taste every time they switch boyfriendsβbasically just mimicking whatever the new guy listens to. Apologies if that sounds a bit chauvinistic, but so far, it's a trait I've only really noticed in guys.
Fair enoughβlet me play devil's advocate for a second. That kind of identity-shifting based on a partner seems more like teenage behavior to me. Once you hit your 20s, most of us have developed actual personalitiesβitβs unlikely weβd overhaul our entire sense of self (even something as trivial as music) just to please someone. Besides, looking at my own life, some of my favorite bands exist in my library specifically because a girlfriend introduced them to me. If a relationship is actually healthy, it should involve a little bit of mutual influence... π

You really shouldn't have gone there. Why on earth would you be siding with them? There isn't some other side for you to pickβitβs us or nobody. You can try to be a defector if you want, but we all know exactly how that ends for people like you. Delete this post right now, or else...

Honestly, you two should just coordinate a romantic candlelit dinnerβmaybe grab some takeout from a local vegan spot... π
