Is there anything worth ripping right now? I'm not really feeling like burning discs, and since I don't have any DVD-Rs lying around, having some 1.4 GB rips on my hard drive would be ideal.
It should be relatively easy, though I'd probably pack them into a Matroska container and downsample the audio to stereo. Why bother with a subpar picture just to keep a useless AC3 track? I'm only using stereo speakers anyway, so why stress over surround sound?

It’s actually pretty straightforward. You could pack them into a Matroska container, and honestly, I'd just downsample the audio to stereo. It feels pointless to have a crappy picture just to keep a mediocre Dolby Digital track—especially since I only use stereo speakers anyway, so surround sound doesn't mean much to me.

I've never done any ripping myself, so I can't say for sure, but those programs get a lot of good reviews.

Backing up your DVDs - DVDRebuilder
Encoding to Xvid - using AviSynth + VirtualDub — pretty much any tweak you need

It’s a different story if you're looking to rip into a Matroska container instead of an AVI. Besides, I have zero interest in re-encoding old footage, so spare me the whole "DVD Remake" gimmick.

I haven't really had much reason to mess with Matroska, so I can't say anything 😬 all that profound, but it’s not some scary monster either. I've never actually used GK—I've always just done everything manually—so I’d probably take the same route here; just poke around the doom9.org forums for a simple tutorial and call it a day. Basically, you just rip the video and audio into whatever format you want and then mux them together using mkvtoolnix, and you should be good to go. I tested it with a few files and it works fine.
But seriously, why Matroska? Aside from the obvious perks, when is it actually going to be supported on standalone players? Or are you strictly watching stuff on a PC?

I strictly stick to my PC.
Besides, I figured the folks over at my local meetup would appreciate being able to grab some of those harder-to-find movies too. 😉

I still don't quite get why everyone's pushing Matroska over standard Xvid, but whatever. Anyway, here’s a guide for MP4 and AAC encoding
As for Matroska—you can just use dvd2avi with vfapi or stick with AviSynth to do some frameserving from the DVD into VirtualDubMod. From there, just follow

It’ll be Xvid, but I’m using a Matroska container instead of AVI.
Actually, it's going to be Xvid paired with an Ogg stereo audio rip.🙂
I'll run some tests once I can track down a DVD. Most of my collection is back in Sweden. 😢 (though I might just borrow one from someone around here 😁 )

Honestly, I’m really not feeling the OGG format at all. To me, it just sounds way too stripped down—kind of like a slightly better version of WMA👎

It really depends on how you're ripping. I use LAME with VBR at max settings, so even OGG won't hold up as much in that bracket.😉
I'm still on the fence about it, though. Maybe MP3 is still the king? At those bitrates, does the difference even matter anymore?
