So, last month I had an annual referral for a psychiatrist. Then, this past month, I sent my primary care doctor an email asking for a one-time referral instead, since my current psychiatrist is retiring—that’s what I told them.
Once I got the referral and finished the appointment, I went ahead and booked a session with a new psychiatrist at a different clinic. Naturally, I emailed my GP's office to ask for another referral, only to get hit with a response saying I’d already been issued a referral for the previous visit that’s valid for three months. I had absolutely no clue they had even written one, and I didn't bother checking because I never asked for it in the first place!
I tried explaining the whole situation: I specifically requested a single-use referral because my psych is retiring, I had no idea a three-month one was sitting there, and I've already scheduled someone else at a totally different facility. I asked if we could just fix this, and the nurse basically told me she couldn't figure it out right now and that I needed to show up in person. I told her, "Look, no problem, it's not an emergency, I can swing by next week," but she just kept insisting I have to come in personally.
What am I looking at here? It feels completely pointless to drive all the way down there in person. Can I actually expect the GP to fix their own mistake? And more importantly, can I still exercise my right to choose my own doctor, assuming that right even exists anymore?
