HELP! I'm locked out of my Windows XP system because the password was changed. Is there any way to get back in without having to reinstall everything or format the drive?

I used to burn an ISO to a CD... you’d boot into some Linux distro that let you reset any user's password on the fly.

I pulled it off on an administrator account once, and it worked perfectly.
If I could just remember the name of the tool or if I still have it lying around somewhere...

(It wasn't even a huge file, maybe 2-3MB)

Maybe try grabbing "ERD Commander" or some similar bootable tool. It should let you jump into the system and mess with all those settings, including the Windows XP password.

I honestly think he just needs a decent password instead of constantly swapping them out 😬

Have you tried Googling it?

Could you please stick to one thread for the same question next time? We don't allow spam here.

Sure, I am—but only when the thread is actually formatted correctly and the person asking isn't totally clueless about what they're looking for.

This whole thing is just nonsense.

Maybe try copying just the file itself and then attempting to crack it on a different machine—I’m not entirely certain, but I suspect the password gets stored within Windows

Now everyone knows just as much as they did before.

How does it work with Equi again? 😁
format C: autotest
Honestly, that’s probably the easiest way to go...

Yeah, Windows saves the password right in the file itself. There are plenty of tools out there for cracking them, but it’s a massive grind. Last time I tried it, I spent four days straight just trying to break through.

Makes more sense now?

😁 😁

Does that clear things up?

😁 😁

Look, if you're talking about a password like admin, you aren't gonna need four days.

Unless you're running a 486DX2/66 on it.

But yeah, for something beefy like )sd#4Rf&22A, it’ll definitely take some serious time to crack.

Honestly, isn't even worth the effort if we're talking about your own PC.
