Here is a basic example of how you should set up sidechain compression between the bass and the kick. A decent studio engineer should have configured it this way to prevent the kick drum from completely drowning out the bass frequencies. Essentially, for every note played on the bass, you want to see about 3 dB of gain reduction on the kick.

I forgot to mention that the Haymarket Riot bassist acted like a complete jerk and jumped right onto my bass drum. I actually thought it was a pretty cool move for the first few seconds, until I realized the guy was standing on MY drum.😁
As for my take on Haymarket, they were alright, I guess. Nothing special. After about thirty minutes of playing, they just start feeling repetitive.
You can't say that about Yes-pes, though. They actually manage to strike a sense of "dread" in certain parts of the crowd. Honestly, I'll take that over being bored to death any day. 😁
By the way, it would probably be nice if people backed up their opinions with some actual arguments, wouldn't it?

I mean, you were playing totally limp and disinterested, just scratching at the walls like you’d rather be back home staring at a wall, all while trying to pull off this supposedly "energetic" set. Also, given how much you guys were messing around with your gear, the band really should have been tighter—half the time it sounded like everyone was playing in different zip codes. Peach Pit can pull that off; you guys aren't there yet. Before the show, people described you guys as the American version of Mars Volta. And honestly, even though those kinds of comparisons usually sound ridiculous to me, this one actually hits the mark. You sound almost gloriously terrible, just like them. 😁
Alright, fine, I'll take it back—their show opening for Apes of the Forest and Les Savy Fav was freaking legendary, it's just their studio stuff that sucks. And since we're talking about it, your first track was actually decent; it briefly reminded me of Les Savy Fav. Unfortunately, the rest was pretty mid, though I'm sure there's an audience out there for it. Anyway, I'll stop here, gotta leave some room for hollowseal33pennie.

Personally, I wasn't feeling the Haymarket Riot at all. Maybe if they weren't so deafeningly loud, I actually would have heard the music. They righteously sucked. 😛

Maybe try hunting down an MP3 of the Bloodshot Eyes album? You can actually make out the music there, and unlike that concert, you can finally hear the bass guitar instead of it just drowning everything out. I really think it might change your mind...

Haha, alright, fine. I’ll make sure to wear a Metallica shirt next time and work on that intense "killer stare" you see all those drummers from those trashy MTV bands pull off. The whole thing about staring at the walls was just me messing around. I didn't think people would take it so seriously—I mean, who actually watches the drummer? But apparently, I’m just the most awkward, confused guy in the band. 😁
Just keep in mind, this was only our second show, and it was at The Fillmore, a venue we absolutely love performing at, in front of an American crowd we have a ton of respect for. So yeah, we were a little bit terrified. 😁
And sure, the songs are complex. We like a wide variety of music and we try to mash it all together. Whether that actually sounds good or not? I guess that’s for everyone else to decide. We’re kind of like tobacco—not exactly the most pleasant thing, yet look how much people smoke it. 😁(What am I even talking about?)
Yeah, I walked away feeling like we totally baffled the audience. We'll do better next time...

np: the fall - midwatch 1953

I thought the Haymarket Riot set was actually pretty solid, even if they’re playing a version of post-core that feels a little played out by now—whatever you want to call it. They look great on stage, though; super polished and fun to watch. Honestly, the biggest surprise for me was seeing that the whole band is well into their thirties.
As for Yes-pes, I mean, it could have been better 😁 but hey, I’m just glad we got to play at our favorite club. Thanks for all the feedback, especially the comment that made my face turn bright red... suggesting we were a total disaster just like Mars Volta 😎—that definitely made me worry we were totally screwed 😁
Anyway, quick question for the regulars here—any chance someone could help me burn a recording from this mini-disc onto a CD? A buddy over at Totem Owl mentioned you guys handled that for him without any hassle. Would that be a problem?

A friend of mine was just venting to me about his drummer, complaining that the guy doesn't play any fills at all. It’s one of those things where the rhythm stays steady, sure, but without those transitions between sections, the whole song feels like it's just stalling instead of moving forward. 😁
I’ve reached a point where I find myself leaning toward benevolence. To be fair, they aren't completely clueless. If they put in a significant amount of practice and actually sit down to write a massive volume of songs, there might be some real potential there eventually. That is, assuming they can somehow figure out how to bring some actual energy to the stage in the meantime. As it stands now, the whole performance felt a bit like a high school talent show.
