Nina Simone - Feeling Good

I've been spinning those Columbia Records unmixed compilations way too much lately. This Feeling Good track just hits different—gives me major vibes. If I had to pick a standout from recent stuff, probably that Bonobo DJ set recorded live at the Blue Note in NYC last year.

The same T.C.—I don't know their stuff all that well (I only have The Mirror Conspiracy at home), but they put this together beautifully. Stan Getz, Ella Fitzgerald, Jimmy Smith... honestly, I could paste the entire tracklist right here, I love everything about it. I listened to the album last week—I lost count, maybe ten times?—and loved every single moment. Plus, I blasted it again today during the drive from Savannah to Washington, D.C. It's hard to pick a favorite track, especially since so many are instrumentals, and the ones with lyrics are mostly in Spanish, so I don't really follow along.

You should try picking up 'The Richest Man in Babylon,' it's just as fantastic.

Album of the week—skipping the winner this time because I just wasn't feeling that whole "consistency and perfection" vibe today.

Song of the week—Freeheat - Facing up to The Facts (Jim Reid and the crew, heavy on the explicit lyrics, basically that whole everything's fine while you're falling apart and I love rock n roll and I'm sick and don't worry be happy kind of mood).

Also Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)—looking at the big picture, the Kill Bill soundtracks are absolute gems, man, what a time for movies.

The whole day has basically been dominated by Bright Eyes' *Fevers & Mirrors*, but if I’m being honest, the track that’s actually stuck in my head—occupying my ears, my brain, my thoughts, and my entire mood—is "when the curious girl realizes she is under the glass."
It’s been a full-on fake day, maybe even longer.
And yet, it hasn't totally sent me into a depression (well, at least not the absolute bottom-of-the-barrel kind). I guess I don't really know what that means. (???)

[I mean, it’s kind of a snooze fest 🙄], but it's the album of the week since I finally got around to spinning it and won't be touching it again anytime soon.

Song of the week: Cowboy Junkies ~ My Wild Child (from the album One Soul now, 2004) - 🙏 👍

I swear, I memorized the whole "Obstacle 2" track by Interpol after just two or three listens. Talk about a total earworm!!

Interpol is seriously incredible—every single time I hit play again, it feels like I’m hearing a brand new record for the first time.🙂

np Kantner, Slick & Freiberg - Visions Of China

They’re blending all sorts of stuff here—loud, live guitars and drums reminiscent of post-rock bands, mixed with those jittery samples you'd hear from Aphex Twin or Venetian Snares, plus a little touch of drum 'n' bass. The guitar, drums, and computer are all working in sync! I bet they’d be incredible to see live. It probably feels a lot like watching a Manitoba set.

Nothing really stuck in my head from the new stuff I dug into this week, except maybe Prefuse 73 - One Word Extinguisher
It's actually a pretty fun listen.

Song of the week: Kylie - I Believe in You

The collab between Kylie Minogue and Scissor Sisters? Honestly, it sounds divine. My only gripe is that it’s way too short—I need more—but hey, if you put it on repeat, everything is golden. 🙂

Album: Antony and the Johnsons - Antony and the Johnsons

This is just a stunning album from back in '97. Antony is this incredibly androgynous singer with a powerhouse voice—he actually performed on two Lou Reed albums, which says it all. The music itself is super dark and dramatic; it gives me those moody vibes you get from Badalamenti’s work on the Twin Peaks soundtrack. It also sits somewhere in that sweet spot between Sigur Rós, Tindersticks, and even Ultrasound—you know, that one band with the eccentric frontman who dropped an underrated masterpiece in the late '90s and then basically vanished into thin air.

I’ve been diving deep into the Verve catalog lately—someone mentioned they were revisiting the unremixed stuff, so I decided to tackle the remixes instead... and oh my god, what a disaster!!! Look, I usually love hearing tracks reimagined, but this felt like straight-up torture of perfectly good music. I actually forced myself through almost the entire thing until I hit the Billie Holiday track—that’s where I finally snapped. Leave Billie alone! My ears just couldn't take any more.
On a brighter note, I spent the last week listening to a Lightning Seeds compilation, and man, it was nothing but hits. I’ve been swamped with work, so I needed something easygoing—stuff I already knew by heart that didn't demand my full attention while I tried to decompress from the grind. It wasn't mindless or cheesy, either. Naturally, since I was multitasking, I wasn't really focusing on the lyrics, so I can't pull a single line out of thin air.
