Johnny Ramone has passed away
JOHNNY RAMONE, the guitarist and co-founder of the legendary punk outfit The Ramones, passed away Wednesday evening following a five-year battle with prostate cancer.
At age 55, Ramone—born John Cummings—passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family, according to his publicist.
Johnny was one of the four founding members who launched The Ramones back in 1974. The band's frontman, Joey Ramone, passed away in 2001 from lymphoma, followed by bassist Dee Dee Ramone, who died the next year due to an overdose. Following Johnny's passing, drummer Tommy Ramone remains the sole surviving member of the original lineup.
The Ramones achieved global stardom throughout the 70s, defined by their minimalist, raw, two-minute bursts of punk rock. Johnny Ramone himself used to claim that even after twenty years on the road, they were "still playing faster than any other rock and roll band" on the planet.
Between 1974 and 1996, The Ramones released 26 studio and live albums. They also brought their high-energy show to the States, including a massive performance at a packed Madison Square Garden in 1990, and returned to play a smaller venue just four years later.
