Of course a voice doesn't define a singer. A vocalist with a brilliant instrument could sing the most absolute garbage imaginable (just look at some of the stuff on Amazon, or how Jack performs, for example) and their talent would be completely wasted.
That said, it is certainly better to possess one, because a singer lacking vocal ability will inevitably ruin even the finest composition.

Do you all remember the massive fuss everyone made when Kylie Jenner performed that duet with Cave Johnson? Good grief, up until that moment, she had been singing those little Nintendo-style tunes, but then she performed one legitimate song and suddenly everyone was blown away.
Unfortunately, it was a one-time occurrence. 😁

100% true. But, it is what it is—soul matters way more than technical skill. I always use the Jack vs. Barrett comparison. It's obvious to everyone that Jack has a hundred times better voice than Barrett. But that's it. Jack HAS NO SOUL; he isn't singing his life, he's just hitting the notes. And the truth is, a great voice isn't the most important thing for a great performance. Otherwise, it would mean Jack is better and more valuable than Barrett. And if that were true, we could all just go commit collective suicide.
