Alias (2001-2006)

So, Alias kicks off this Monday at 10:40 PM on ABC... I feel like I've heard so much chatter about this show already that I'm actually curious to see what those of you who've already sat through it think about it...

I suspect the series will turn out to be quite decent, likely following a trajectory similar to the James Bond franchise 😁

I'm curious about one thing... how often does Jennifer Garner actually get nominated for her roles? And wow, it’s honestly a miracle that Nova TV didn't jump on this first... at least we won't be stuck watching a mountain of commercials, right?

I saw this on Pro7 about six months ago, and honestly, I wasn't really feeling it.

Mreža Plus has been broadcasting in Canada for a while now—you can even catch it on satellite. I rarely tune in, though. It mostly feels like high-budget, overproduced filler, even if Quentin Tarantino did make a cameo in one episode.😎
But honestly, I haven't watched enough of it to act like an expert.😁

Personally, I don't have strong feelings about it either way. It’s got its gems, sure, but it also has its fair share of filler. It feels like one of those perfectly mediocre shows—the kind where you sit down for "just one episode" and suddenly realize two hours have vanished into thin air.

If I'm being honest, though, the most interesting part of the whole series for me is the CIA director character rather than the lead woman. It offers a little something for the guys to latch onto... even if it isn't anything groundbreaking.

So, everyone—has anyone checked out the new series yet? What are we thinking?

My wife actually looked a bit like Nikita / Leeloo in it... overall, it was just okay. I really hope the quality doesn't tank once they start stacking up the episodes.

It’s a solid series, though since this was just the pilot, it felt a bit long. I'm hoping things tighten up once we hit the standard episode length.

Unfortunately, the rerun aired overnight... definitely not on Tuesday.
Maybe someone caught a recording... Anyways, you can find everything online these days—plus, the next episode drops next Monday. Since season three is already airing here in the States, I feel like the show could be 👍

When I was reading the recap on TXT, I initially thought, “this feels like Buffy,” then while actually watching, it felt more like “Men in Black,” and honestly, now I don't even know where I stand with this show.

The lead actress is alright, I guess. 👍 She reminds me a bit of Julia Roberts back in the day… which probably explains why I found her comment about “Pretty Woman” being her favorite movie of all time so funny.

It seems like "tough girls" have been the big trend for the last few years. We had Nikita, then Xena, then Buffy, then Hercules 😁 (just kidding… Kevin Sorbo is the BOG 😂 NOT 😛), then that bad attempt from Cameroon to pull off Dark Angel 🙂, so I suppose it's no surprise another heroine in the same mold showed up. Though, I have to admit, this might be the best attempt so far.

Anyway, the show feels incredibly juvenile to me—like, totally teen-oriented. I seriously don't get why some producer decided to slot this in at the same time as “The West Wing”??? 😕 This feels more like something you'd see on an American network at 9:00 PM on a Tuesday night….but whatever.

What I like about the series:

First off, the first episode completely killed any expectation I had that this would be one of those "must-watch" shows. To be honest, I can't even find a single reason why I'd bother watching the next one.
‘How is that a good thing, you ask?’ Well, simply put, I'm watching this as light entertainment for a Monday night. Since I have zero expectations, I can't really be disappointed, and it might just pleasantly surprise me….so there.

The lead actress is good. She could definitely pass as a CIA agent or whatever agency they run these days.

That guy who briefs the agents on all the various ‘gadgets’ is gold. He has that total stereotypical ‘geek appearance,’ stammers a little, and I bet he doesn't have a social life outside of the gizmos he builds.
He's a great comic relief character… like when he blurted out, “There are 42 pictures in the apartment, but I want to make it 47 because 47 is a prime number”….CLASSIC. 🙏

What I don't like:

First and foremost is the massive amount of naivety. For instance… why would a woman spend five minutes brawling with an agent and risking getting beaten up when she could just grab his gun and shoot him? Just one of those stupid plot points.

Basically, that's the problem with most shows of this genre… they do illogical things just for the sake of action or looking "cool."

The music is just terrible... you'd think after hearing about twenty identical musical themes looped through endless series, they could come up with something a bit more “exotic”…but noooooooo….it has to be some trashy girly pop. 🙂 It's gross.

Well, fine… you have to give the series a few more episodes before passing final judgment… I don't think it's going to be anything groundbreaking or unforgettable, but it has the potential to surprise.

We'll see how it goes. 🙂

You're asking how she survived? It's pretty simple, really.

We all know that CIA agents—and similar intelligence agencies—are basically trained to survive falls from heights way greater than 10 meters.

In all honesty, the training starts when they're just kids; they start dropping them from high chairs onto the floor, and the ones who walk away without a scratch move on, while the ones left with visible brain damage get recruited. Because, hey, who wouldn't want to live their entire life incognito, constantly looking over their shoulder because the agency they work for might kill everyone they care about up to their third cousin?

Anyways, the real training kicks in once those future female CIA agents head to school and hit gym class.

Every school seems to have at least one PE teacher who is secretly an undercover agent. Even if his gym shorts don't cover nearly enough, he's there quietly overseeing the advanced conditioning of these future agents without them ever realizing it.

To make a long story short, by the time they finish high school, all these future female CIA agents are basically certified to land on their backs from heights of up to 5 meters without much issue, though they probably don't even realize they've been trained for it.

It isn't until they actually join the CIA that the training ramps up for anything over 5 meters. That's when they finally get in on the loop.

Basically, it's just a TV show... there wouldn't be a sequel if the heroine died from a fall, even though according to every law of physics, she totally should have.

The thing is, in this series, I'm always baffled by how much every agent—even the bad guys—seems to value human life. God forbid someone shoots someone else in the head... noooo... that would just be too inhumane.

I always find myself wondering the same thing—why on earth don't they just pull out a gun? 😕 But let’s be honest, you have to admit there’s something much more magnetic and cinematic about watching a woman handle herself in hand-to-hand combat.
I didn't catch the very beginning of the series, though, so can someone catch me up? How exactly did she end up becoming an agent?

She basically became an agent out of sheer boredom. She was just finishing up her degree when some recruiter approached her with a job offer—she passed their tests, and suddenly she’s an intern-agent. Because, you know, she’s still a student.
I finally gave up on the show because the logic is non-existent. Look, I get it, it’s TV, whatever—but the idea that a woman comes out of a brawl with a gorilla without a single scratch? Yeah, right 🙄 . And her friends are unbelievably dim if they actually buy into this plot point where she has to drop everything at any hour just for some part-time gig at a bank.

Honestly, this show is just absolute perfection. It totally dominates everything else on screen. Sure, I’ll admit there are moments where the logic feels a bit shaky or just plain silly, but look—if The New York falls from ten stories up, The New York has to make it out okay, otherwise, we wouldn't even have a show left to watch. But then again, she is THE NEW YORK! There is even that whole prophecy about her, 😁

It's just that this series manages to wrap up every single episode with such a brilliant cliffhanger that I find myself practically counting down the seconds of the next seven days until the next installment drops. The plot twists are just relentless, usually hitting right in that final second... and those storylines... And then there's Arvin Sloane, who is basically Satan himself? That man is nothing short of pure, unadulterated evil; he actually gives me the chills. Plus, having Quentin Tarantino and Roger Moore making guest appearances is just incredible (and they fit their roles perfectly, too—one playing a total madman while the other is this quintessential super-spy). I am just completely obsessed with this show. It is easily the BEST thing on TV right now.
