And then Al Pacino tries to take over the world by clogging up the sewers, which triggers a massive monsoon season that causes catastrophic flooding, everyone dies except for his crew, and then Kevin Costner shows up with his Waterworld expertise to save the day, convincing Reeves to pivot careers so they can team up to save the planet and finally take down Pacino.π€ π

We're talking catastrophic flooding everywhere, total chaos, everyone's goneβexcept for his crew. Then, out of nowhere, Kevin Reeves swoops in with all that expertise he gained from Waterworld, tries to fix the mess, and convinces Rivers to switch sides so they can save the world together and finally take down Al Pacino once and for all. π€ π
Now THAT'S just absolutely brilliant! π

Whatever, Iβm fine with it. Personally, a few tweaks wouldβve made it way better, but yeah. First off, the message is just too on the nose. From the second things go south, the atmosphere feels forced and overly ominous. Some of the writing and directing choices are just patronizing. Itβs like theyβre insulting the audienceβas if they were terrified we wouldn't catch the point, even though it unfolds naturally until that intense 20-minute climax where everything becomes crystal clear even to people who haven't seen the movie. Also, evil feels a bit fake, if that makes sense. It's portrayed so extremely and obviously, like a black-and-white caricature instead of something more gray and subtle. After about 30 minutes, there's nothing left to uncover. Evil isn't just one extreme; it's nuanced and takes all sorts of shapes.
And yeah, Keanu is honestly a terrible actor. Not even being sarcastic when I say he's at his best in scenes where he doesn't say a damn thing. No charisma, no nothing. Sometimes I see people talking trash about actors like Al Pacino or Robert De Niro and I'm just confused. Sure, they have their flaws, and after a while, you might get sick of them playing the same types of roles over and over. They might not be the most transformative guys out there, but they have presence and they hit hard in those roles, even when they overact. On the other hand, I have zero clue what kind of character Keanu was trying to pull off yesterday. He would've been better off just playing himself; he might have been inconsistent as a lawyer, but he probably would've been 16 times more convincing and actually had some substance.

Keanu Reeves isn't actually a bad actor. Heβs just a specific tool for a director. If you need a blank slateβsomeone the audience can project themselves ontoβyou hire Keanu. You get him staring wide-eyed at everything while more "Whoas" fly out of his mouth than an epileptic Joey Lawrence.
Director Taylor Hackford made the same blunder Francis Ford Coppola made in Dracula. He expected Keanu Reeves acting with Al Pacino in The Devil's Advocate to hold his own against an acting powerhouse like Al Pacino or Gary Oldman in Dracula, rather than getting blown away like a cotton ball in front of a jet engine. To be fair, The Devil's Advocate performance was basically built for those final 20 minutes where Pacino eats every last inch of the set and shits Oscars. The previous 80 minutes would have been much better if they'd used an actor with more depth than balsa wood.
Brad Pitt, John Cusack, and Edward Norton being considered for Kevin Lomax proves it. Any of them could have played the conflicted, morally tortured lawyer more convincingly. They certainly would have handled a Southern accent better than Reeves did. How hard is a Southern accent? Just huff some paint, drink some cheap bathtub whiskey, and mimic a Larry the cable Guy fan. Even Jean-Claude Van Damme could do a better Southern accent, and he barely talks.
