Anyone seen Monster's Ball (2001)?

I can't stand movies about executions—those stories about miserable wrecks who make a living off death, or racists you're somehow "supposed" to feel bad for because they had a rough childhood or a father who totally screwed them over. Just constant hopelessness wrapped up in that fake Southern "comfort" vibe...

It’s just pure misery and pain. Even when the acting is top-tier, the directing is solid, and the cast is actually great & memorable (Billy Bob Thornton, who's basically a brute in real life, or Halle Berry, who's been through hell since she was a kid)—nothing changes my mind. The overall vibe still sucks.

And it's hard to buy Billy Bob Thornton suddenly overcoming a lifetime of upbringing, his environment, and his old man just because of some experience with a Black woman. It doesn't feel real.

Now, I do believe prison guards or the people running execution chambers have their own messed-up traumas (even if they could easily walk away from a job like that, even if it's a "family business" passed down for three generations)—they definitely do.

But watching the bottom-of-the-barrel scum of society just isn't for me, especially when these films demand you sympathize with them from the jump.
👎 Take Dead Man Walking, for instance. Sean Penn is brilliant in it, sure, but it's an excellent film that still leaves a nasty, metallic taste in my mouth.

Duh, you know exactly why I passed out. It’s because I’m basically EXPECTED to react to a movie just like how you laid it out in your review.
Whenever a film hits me like that, I immediately turn into a rebel for a reason—it's my biggest flaw, honestly. If they mess up the opening act, I'm done. No chance. My partner keeps trying to tell me, "Come on, just give it a fair shot...!"
But seriously, why?!🙄
I have yet to experience a movie actually blowing me away after I already wrote it off as irritating in the first ten minutes.
And yeah, I totally wrote it off. For me, those opening shots set the whole vibe... they're basically the litmus test for whether the quality is even there.

So I binged the whole movie yesterday and honestly? I’m totally lost. It feels like they just flipped a switch on Billy Bob Thornton’s character halfway through... I swear he had a completely different vibe at the start. Like, what even was that??!?!!!??😕
The atmosphere is decent enough, I guess, but everything else is just... off.
Why on earth did Halle Berry get an Oscar for this? Was there even a point to making this movie in the first place?!
I didn't really feel anything...👎
Look, I can see why people say it's okay, but I hate that feeling when you finish a movie and it leaves you with absolutely nothing... not even a bad taste, just... nothing.

What did you guys think of that ending? She just stares at those headstones, looks back at him, and that’s it. It felt kind of creepy to me, honestly. Was she just resigning herself to her fate, or is she essentially his prisoner? I might be overthinking things though, since he’s been nothing but sweet and gentle with her the whole time.

I think I caught this one maybe a few years back. It’s actually pretty good! I’ve had a copy on DVD since way back when they used to bundle them with Sunday papers, but man, I was way too young to care about stuff like this then...

It’s got a slower pace, a really gripping story, and such a unique vibe... you can truly feel that emptiness hanging over their lives.

That whole father-son dynamic with Thornton - Ledger is, in my opinion, the deepest part of the movie. It really drives home just how dysfunctional everything is.

Now, the relationship between Thornton and Halle is tricky for a bunch of different reasons. But honestly? I think it’s just an isolated thing. I don't buy the whole argument about racial dynamics or the idea that it's just showing a Black woman finding solace in a white savior. To me, it felt more like a desperate move that fits the movie in its own weird way. It makes sense, there's a clear cause and effect, and the emotions are definitely there. Overall, I really liked it.

Such a complex topic and a high-quality flick. The directing is top-notch.

Right. At that moment, she’s a woman who has lost everything, and you can see that they look content. You could keep telling the story from there, but the point is that they aren't fighting that conflict anymore...
