I have absolutely no patience for this endless parade of technical metal guitar masturbation....The only legitimate hard rock bends worth mentioning were those delivered by Led Zeppelin...And yet, I see certain idiots attempting to categorize them as metal....Now, that is the absolute truth!

Back in elementary school, I started out listening to Doom metal—think Tiamat, Anathema, Morbid Angel, Paradise Lost, stuff like that. Eventually, I drifted toward more brutal sounds... Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Decapitated, Krisiun, Death, you name it. Then I stumbled onto Dream Theater and got hooked on prog rock, which led me down a rabbit hole of their side projects and all sorts of other underground prog bands.
What I really look for in music is just a solid feeling. It doesn't matter if it's Fusion, Funk, Jazz, Blues, or Death, Black, Grindcore, Progressive, Thrash, or Heavy Metal—if the vibe is there, I'm listening.
That said, most of my rotation is definitely metal. If I had to rank my favorite genres, it would go something like this...

Progressive rock (Dream Theater 😁)

Progressive Death and Grind (Death, Decapitated, Nile, Krisiun, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, etc.)
Black (specifically that nihilistic progressive Black style—Mayhem, Grand Declaration of War, or cult classics like Emperor, Anthems to the Welkins at Dusk, Tartaros, Isengard, and that whole scene...)
I don't exactly love Thrash, Power, or Heavy Metal... BUT I respect them.
I have a soft spot for the classics, obviously... Slayer, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Destruction, Megadeth, Anvil, sa avag...

Power metal isn't my thing.

COF—EPIC BLACK METAL
COB—MELODIC DEATH
SATYRICON—BLACK METAL
VADER—DEATH METAL
IMMORTAL—they used to do black metal, but now... ehh... they're doing some kind of Black experiment... haha.

Power metal is definitely my go-to—I'm a huge fan of almost everything in the genre, though I can't really get into Black metal, Death metal, or those newer commercial hybrid styles they're pushing lately.

1. The old-school classics, mostly Thrash (think Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Exodus, Forbidden, Testament, Violence, Annihilator...)
2. Heavy Metal, mainly that NWOBHM vibe (Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, Saxon, Samson) plus a few legends like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest
3. Power Metal, though I’m leaning way more toward that American Thrash/Power style—like Iced Earth—rather than the classic Helloween type stuff

Most of my favorites fall under Thrash, except for Iron Maiden, who basically forced their way into the second spot on my list and just refuse to budge😁

Honestly, this top 10 is pretty much irrelevant anyway; my top three stay pretty much locked in their spots, but everything else shifts around almost every single day😉

That awful, nasty "nu metal" stuff that some people try to force into the metal category—even though it isn't actually metal—is driving those self-righteous "true" metalheads absolutely insane. They’re all worked up because this "nu crap" gets lumped in with the real genre, despite the fact that it shares more similarities with metal than almost anything else... even if it technically doesn't qualify.
