😁 What am I supposed to do when it's the truth? It's the only way to go. Forget all that Thrash Metal and grind stuff...
Nothing beats Rock 'n' Roll, baby!!! 👋

Cradle of Filth - gothic/black metal
The term "epic" should really refer to the lyrical themes a band explores—it shouldn't be used to describe a musical style itself. Everyone knows what "epic" means in a literary sense—you probably remember it from middle school English class—and it reflects the storytelling in the lyrics. In the metal scene, people started using it to describe power metal bands with grand narratives, think knights in shining armor or ancient crusades... it’s about the text, not the sound. Honestly, so many people—even some major magazines—get this wrong.
In the case of COB, you could call them "symphonic," since they occasionally lean into orchestration and operatic female vocals, among other things...

Children of Bodom is definitely not melodic death metal... if you want to hear what melodic death actually sounds like, go listen to At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, or Dimension Zero. COB basically fused power/heavy metal guitar work—just listen to those solos and the riffing on their first two albums—with a bit of Thrash Metal influence on their last two records (especially on the latest one, "Hate Crew..."). The vocals have a black metal vibe, though they flirt a little with melodic death styles—but they just flirt with it; it's never true death vocals. Most people categorize them as black/power metal, which isn't wrong... but melodic death? Never.

I see your point.🙏

Yeah, I get him, and you've gotta respect that... but let’s be real, he always had this massive ego, acting like he was the sole authority on everything. Like, "I know it all, and none of you have a clue." Especially when it came to DTa.
It was like nobody else was allowed to have an opinion because he already had all the answers.🙄

What’s your go-to genre???

Hands down, black metal. I’m talking Marduk, Dissection, Nokturnal Mortum, Dark Funeral, Immortal, Darkthrone, Emperor, Borknagar... that kind of stuff.

Death metal is right up there too (Vader, Decapitated, Death, Nil, IMMOLATION...)
I also dig melodic death metal—stuff like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and Soilwork.

As for everything else, I might throw on some power metal (Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Iced Earth), some Gothic, maybe some Thrash, etc.

But at the end of the day, my heart really belongs to death and black metal...

Death metal doesn't lag far behind either (Vader, Decapitated, Death, Nil, IMMOLATION...)

But mostly, my heart belongs to Death and Black...

Here he is, the man himself!!!!!! LORD BELIAL

Finally, a real metalhead shows up!

So you listen to Nil, huh? Heh. I was actually blasting Black Seeds of Vengeance just earlier today.
Nil is the absolute truth.
Did you catch Vader when they played in Chicago?
You mentioned DEATH (Chuck Rip!). Man, Chuck was a total metal LEGEND, and more than that; he was a guy who lived his convictions completely and honestly.
Have you heard the good news?
CONTROL DENIED (When man and Machin Collide) is actually coming out after all !!!!!! Despite all that bullshit about labels, it's happening!!!!
According to Chuck's mom, THIS album is the most important one in Chuck's entire career (check the news over at www.emptywords.org)
Where are you from, man?
You leaning towards IMMOLATION, or maybe CANNIBALE?
Anyway, let's talk soon.

Greetings from Cleveland....

Right back at you, Brandon Castillo4...

Yeah, I'm listening to Nil, though unfortunately I only have Amongst Catacombs of Nephren-Ka on hand. But hey, life follows its own script, I guess...😁
That's cool, I actually had no idea about that legend regarding CONTROL DENIED. Thanks for the heads-up! By the way, The Fragile Art of Existence is an absolutely killer album...

Sadly, I missed out on seeing Vader back when I was younger, and honestly, I can't even tell you why. But well, what's done is done... 😢

I’d love to head out to Marduk, but I’m still on the fence. I haven't reached out to any of my buddies to see if they're down yet, but I'll try to cook something up...🙂

Oh, by the way, I'm from the Midwest, just outside of Cleveland...😁

Yeah, I’m listening to Nile right now. Honestly, all I’ve got on hand is *Amongst Catacombs of Nephren-Ka*, but hey, I'm just sticking to the list for now.

I've got three Nile albums in my collection now, including this one.

I’d honestly love to hit up the Marduk show, but I’m still on the fence about it. I haven't even reached out to any of my buddies yet to see if they're down, but I'll try to pull something together. I'll see if I can make some magic happen.

So, here’s the deal... me and three of my buddies are still totally up in the air about whether we're actually going to make the trip. We haven't made up our minds yet. IMMOLATION, MARDUK, MALEVOLENT CREATION, NOCTIFERIA (Denver, April 27th) Or... maybe not.
Cannibal Corpse and Sinister are hitting Denver on April 20th.
Look, if you can somehow engineer a way to make it happen, just get down here with us. Either we'll run into each other out there, or we'll figure something out on the fly. Honestly, as long as there's booze involved, I don't care how we pull it off. 😁
It depends.😎 If we can manage to snag some rides for the Immolation show, we'll be set. I'm sure those die-hard RI DEATH metalheads will be out in full force for one of those gigs.👍 )...
And you better believe we’re heading to the Maiden concert in Cleveland on June 17th. That’s non-negotiable.
Yeah, I'm from the Midwest, just a bit outside of Cleveland.

Look, there’s really no point in stressing over this. We’ll figure it out. We always do.

Right back at you, Brandon Castillo4.

Long live true metal.

VADER

Look, you can be as salty as you want about missing VADER, DECAPITATED, KRISIUN, Prejudice, or Supremacy...
The whole thing was insane—just pure death metal madness. Prejudice and Supremacy were killer, though Vader seemed a little off by the end of their set. Probably just exhausted from the tour, I guess.
But honestly, ignore all that crap people are posting on United Forces claiming the show was "total garbage." That’s straight-up nonsense (even if we were all pretty wasted, haha😉 😁 )...

Don't sweat it, there'll be another chance next time...👍

Definitely heavy stuff—some trash, some power, even some melodic death...

Just playing them in whatever order I feel like...

I'm on the same page as what Walmart said:
"1. old-school classic thrash (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Exodus, Forbidden, Testament, Violence, Annihilator...)
2. heavy metal, mostly NWOBHM (Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, Saxon, Samson) plus a few older legends (Black Sabbath, Judas Priest)
3. power metal, specifically more toward American thrash/power styles (like Iced Earth) rather than the classic Helloween type

1. Metallica
2. Iron Maiden
3. Slayer
4. Iced Earth
5. Megadeth
6. Exodus
7. Forbidden
8. Judas Priest
9. Testament
10. Annihilator"

The only thing is, I’d make one little exception and include Metallica..
I know they don't really fit into those three categories mentioned above, but for me, they're the exception..😁 😁 🙂 🙂
