The whole term "epic" should really refer to the lyrical themes a band tackles—it shouldn't be used to describe a musical style! I mean, come on, everyone knows what "epic" means—it’s poetry and epics, stuff we all learned back in elementary school—and it reflects the actual lyrics of the song... in the metal scene, people started using it for power metal bands that had those epic stories about knights in colorful armor or holy wars... it's the lyrics, not the music! So many people, even many magazines, constantly misuse these descriptions...
In the case of COF, you could definitely throw "symphonic" in there, since they occasionally use orchestrations, female operatic vocals, and all that...

And Children of Bodom? They are absolutely NOT melodic death metal... seriously, go listen to At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, or Dimension Zero if you want to hear what melodic death metal actually sounds like... COB basically fused power/heavy metal guitar work (just listen to the solos and the riffs on their first two albums!) with a bit of thrashier guitar stuff on the last two (especially on the latest one, "Hate Crew..."). The vocals have that black metal feel, though they lean slightly toward melodic death styles (but only lean—it's definitely not a true death vocal)... most people describe them as black/power metal, which honestly works, but calling them melodic death? Never!

Sure, even if many magazines label COF as "Epic symphonic black metal"... I don't listen to COF enough for it to bother me or for me to get too worked up about it. They have a few good albums and a pretty recognizable sound, but I wouldn't call myself a fan. Still, they're a solid band with a strong backing team (management-wise),
and now that they have their own label (ABRACADAVER), they're basically untouchable.😁

As for COB, yeah, I went too far there. Real melodic death is In Flames, At the Gates, and that crowd. I only group COB under melodic death because that's the genre they fit into most closely in terms of their style, their look, and who they tour with.
COB draws from a ton of different influences like power metal, thrash, and so on...
COB CANNOT BE BLACK METAL, because having SOME black metal elements (like the vocals—which sit right on the line between melodic death and black vocals)—the sound and all that—doesn't mean, and CANNOT mean, that they are black metal. No one can pigeonhole COB as "black." It's a bigger mistake to call them black metal than it is to call them melodic death.

I'm honestly getting tired of this constant bashing directed at nu-metal. Personally, I think those first two Korn albums—and even the next couple—are fantastic. They’d probably be considered masterpieces by much more people if they hadn't become so mainstream. It's just senseless...
