What's the best movie in its genre?

Action movies? OFF, hands down. The script is top-tier, and let’s be honest, John Woo is a total master when it comes to action. It's masterful. My favorite part has to be that church scene—those pigeons flying everywhere while he walks in, paired with that music... just phenomenal.

Thriller? Seven. No hesitation there; in my book, this is the best. What really sticks with me is the pacing and that constant, heavy sense of tension. Just brilliant.

Comedy? Personally, I have a soft spot for parodies. But they have to be done right. For instance, if you remember that UFO movie from about fifteen years ago—it was a great parody of Rambo.
That said, for a comedy to work for me, I actually need to laugh. Even so, my absolute favorite remains Monty Python's Life of Brian.

Drama? Titanic. Sure, it's a romance, but it's a massive spectacle regardless.

Horror? Halloween. Specifically the first one. Hardly anyone even dies, there isn't much blood to speak of, yet it's tense as hell.
The Blair Witch Project is also up there. I really dig that one.

SF? Alien. The second one is great, but the first one is also excellent.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind is another solid pick.

Honestly, I’d make my own list, but man, it’s tough. I’d really have to sit down and actually think about what counts as "the best."
I’ve already got way too many candidates floating around in my head, and I can't even decide which ones are better than the others.
Once I figure it out, I'll be back.

I just threw this up on here quickly. I really don't feel like overanalyzing things right now; I just posted the first thing that popped into my head.
It's pure commercial fluff, designed strictly for entertainment.
My thought was just to give people something mindless to chew on if that's what they enjoy watching. 😛

I could sit here and pretend to be an expert on Aki Kurismaki or Akira Kurosawa just to suck up to someone, but I have zero intention of doing that. It's commercialism, plain and simple.

I started this exact same thread like two months ago and crickets... now suddenly everyone's showing up... clearly they just can't stand me. 😁

I guess I'm not allowed to add genres here... (maybe some other time)
so.

action - T2. It’s not totally brainless, but man, it’s dialed up to eleven. Not to mention how technically perfect the whole thing is.

thriller - When Silence Falls. Hard to say WHY... maybe the lead actress, the subtle yet punchy directing, the insane atmosphere, or just the fact that it's one of the few realistic movies about a serial killer...

comedy - The Big Lebowski. Probably the best comedic characters ever. The script is wild, basically every line is hilarious. (Actually, Dr. Strangelove is better than Lebowski, but I'm scared it isn't pure comedy)

drama - The Shawshank Redemption. Or maybe One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Maybe it's easy to pull my heartstrings, but those two really got to me.

horror - The Thing, by Carpenter. Unbeatable atmosphere, you never know who the bad guy is. Honestly the only movie that REALLY freaked me out. (I was only 11 back then though...)

SF - Contact. Based on a great book, but the script is even better—sharper, more precise. The ideas and philosophy in the movie hit home for me, probably why I love it. Plus, the acting and directing are top-tier.

Contact—is that the one starring Charlie Sheen where aliens try to colonize Earth by triggering global warming?

Or is it that movie where this woman picks up a deep-space signal only to realize it’s actually some kind of Hitler's speech broadcast from the stars? She wants to attempt "first contact," but since she doesn't believe in God, that guy from Picket Fences jumps in to help, only to die in some terrorist attack or whatever... blah, blah, blah.

Thriller - Psycho
Comedy - Dumb & Dumber
Drama - The Godfather
Horror - The Exorcist
Sci-Fi - Blade Runner

Horror—Hellraiser, I think that’s the title...

Anyway, I'd pick movies pretty similar to frozentiger6... honestly, shallow minds tend to think alike. 🙂

thriller - Seven (though Psycho or Memento could work too)
comedy - Monty Python or A Fish Called Wanda
drama - tough call... maybe Fight Club fits here? If not, then let's go with Shawshank or Donnie Darko
horror - definitely The Exorcist
sci-fi - oh yeah... Blade Runner
animation - Metropolis

Action—Black Cat, Underground Warrior

Thriller—Lamb, The Usual Suspects, Twelve Monkeys—I guess those count as thrillers...

Comedy—Monty Python, Bad Taste

Drama—

Western—Good, Bad, and the Ugly, Blue Velvet

Sci-Fi—Alien, Blade Runner, Lord of the Rings

Horror—Superstition, Horror Hospital, Slaughterhouse
