The movie is alright, I guess, but nothing special... just okay.

Spent my weekend catching up on two films.
Gangs of New York (my rating: 4/5)
Chicago (my rating: 3/4)

It’s the exact same issue I had with "Gangs"—you know, how Leonardo DiCaprio's role felt totally misplaced? Well, Renée Zellweger's performance here was a totalllll miss. Just like how Dietrich was phenomenal in "Gangs," C. Zet is easily two classes—maybe even two leagues—better than Reneica, who honestly brings nothing to the table besides a baby face and some pretty features. There's zero substance in her acting, and don't even get me started on her voice... she just squeaks or sings like some three-year-old kid. Honestly, Zet and Reneica look like a solid professor and a troublemaking student. Personally, I can't stand Richard Gere—he's just unappealing to me, both in his acting and his whole vibe (feels like a total Hollywood manufactured product to me)—but I suppose he's slightly better than mediocre in this one.

All in all, it's a decent flick, but it's nowhere near deserving all those Oscars it swept up.

Can't wait to dive into the other Oscar contenders (The Pianist, 8 Mile, etc.)...
So far, "Gangs" was outstanding and actually deserved the hardware—at least for Dietrich.
"Chicago" grabbed those Oscars undeservedly.

Well, fine then. I’m currently watching Chicago and I have to say, I'm enjoying it. As far as musicals go, it's actually quite watchable—unlike that over-the-top, heavily decorated Moulin Rouge, though that was good in its own way. The casting is solid, and I can certainly get behind Richard Gere...
The dance numbers feel incredibly authentic too, not just some random fluff. The floorwork, the rhythmic stomping, the raw intensity, the physical contact, the sheer madness, the speed, the professionalism... it’s all there.

Anyway—the movie is fantastic, and honestly, the casting is even better. It’s miles ahead of Moulin Rouge, if you ask me.

I watched it just yesterday, and honestly, it was alright... though I have to admit, I was mostly distracted by the cleavage. I practically couldn't take my eyes off them—truth be told, I’ve been searching for something like that for ages... which is a bit of a disaster, really. I mean, could she not have padded her bra with a few tissues, or at least opted for a push-up

I haven't actually sat down to watch the movie, but I think I’ve caught a live musical before—if that’s what we're talking about—and the production was called Chicago. If my memory serves me right, they filmed it based on that, too. 😕 Honestly though, I just don't have the patience for movie musicals. 😁

I actually went through the exact same thing where I watched both the musical and the movie, and honestly, I was so hooked right after the credits rolled that I immediately went out and grabbed the soundtrack on CD. It’s just so incredibly good...

I watched the musical too, and honestly, looking back at the trailers, I don't feel like the movie moved away from the stage design even an inch. Especially since in the actual show, Marty Pellow is legendary!
Musical theater productions usually make me want to die of boredom—like, seriously, never my thing—but apparently, this was done following Bob Fosse’s specific directions, which makes it super chic and minimal. I guess that's how the movie turned out too?
The dancers were the absolute best part for me; they’d just pop up out of nowhere and snag a supporting role. Is it like that in the movie? Because, frankly, I can't even bring myself to watch the film because of that actress, Catherine Zeta-Jones.

I’ve got maybe 5 or 6 plays on my bucket list that I’d love to catch out in the wild—but man, those tickets are ridiculously pricey! So for now, everything is just on hold until I can finally pick a favorite. And let me tell you, that is a freaking impossible decision...

There’s this one shop that sells last-minute tickets right before the curtain goes up, but it’s kind of a gamble: it’s basically "this show or nothing." You just wait in line, see what’s left once it’s your turn, snag a ticket for 50% off, and head straight to the theater

The first fifteen minutes? Absolutely stellar. I’d go as far as to say the movie has everything it needs to be an absolute masterpiece in the musical genre. Actually—if I’m being honest—it has one thing too many: Richard Gere. The second he shows up with that off-key little number and that totally disastrous performance, the whole film just falls flat on its face.

I honestly think Moulin Rouge is way better. Period.🙂

Personally, I found the movie pretty mediocre—it’s just a massive pile of glitter, all shimmer and glamour, and that typical Americanized chatter
It’s watchable enough, and the acting is fine (though honestly, they should probably pass a law banning Richard Gere and Zellweger from singing😁), and while the plot isn't terrible, the whole thing just lacks soul.
Compare that to Moulin Rouge, which is beautifully kitschy😁 but was crafted with actual heart; I actually found myself humming along in the theater a few times.😁

And yet, this one somehow walked away with the Oscar for Best Picture.🙄
Just as a side note for context, based on some recent films I’ve sat through—The Pianist and Frida were both much better than Chicago.

I haven't actually sat down to watch Chicago yet, but I did catch a preview and a segment about it on CNN during their coverage of the Oscar nominees. After seeing that, I couldn't help but wonder—what exactly is it that people saw in that movie to warrant such a massive haul of nominations and Oscars? To me, the film just looked... well, uninspiring. Now, don't get me wrong, I genuinely love musicals. I thought Moulin Rouge was absolutely fantastic, and if I'm being completely honest, I was actually a bit disappointed it didn't walk away with more hardware—in my eyes, it’s superior to Chicago in almost every way. The songs are better, the choreography is tighter, and the story itself feels much more compelling. I'll definitely be revisiting Moulin Rouge soon, whereas I might finally give Chicago a shot whenever it happens to air on Chicago.

But how can you possibly know what works or doesn't when you haven't even seen the movie yet???

It would be so much better if people who love jumping in to criticize films actually sat down and watched them first before they start swinging, instead of doing this...🙄
