Honestly, I haven't heard anything about this before! I think it would be a great idea if those points actually meant something—like, say, hitting thirty minuses triggers an automatic ban, whereas if you rack up thirty pluses, they just cancel out the bad stuff. 🤣

That feature exists on vB forums too; it usually looks like a little white scale sitting right next to those report icons in the postbit area.
But honestly, it’s just as useless as the "thanks/groans" button.

That’s exactly why I tacked 🤣 onto the end, because does anyone else have some other "brilliant" idea they want to throw out there? 🤣

(p.s. rustydrifter10, I mean, you could easily just turn people against someone else and get them banned like that 🤣)

And let me tell you, it’s the most mindless, pointless nonsense... I remember us going at it for months on some poker forum over whether stuff like that was actually necessary or not. At the end of the day, it boils down to being the exact same deal as a like/dislike button.
Bottom line? I'm against it...

Hold on, just give them some time. 😁

Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m talking about.
Some people just lean on that stuff purely to boost their popularity on the Forum. They treat those "thumbs up" and "thanks" buttons like they’re some kind of status symbol for their reputation, which, honestly, is totally pointless to me.

And then once they start throwing their weight around with that feature, you’ll eventually see status updates popping up like, "[Username] is highly esteemed by the community."

Look, for some folks, that’s actually a good thing. 😁

If it doesn't serve any real purpose, then what's the point of even having it? ☕

That’s just how things work on this forum, baby. That’s just the way it is!🙂

🤣

Precisely, briskbison41. On most forums, it mostly ends up being a tool for sucking up to the moderators—a mod writes "good morning" and suddenly everyone is showering them with thanks. 🤷

I certainly hope the forum administration isn't even considering this option. 🙄

Honestly, I don't even see the point in opening this thread in the first place. 🤷

Honestly, I don't think the idea is half bad—in fact, it has some real merit. On the student forums over at Berkeley, we see a similar setup working quite effectively.

If anything, maybe we could just cut down on those irritating "quote + I agree" posts that clutter everything up.

Maybe she could cut back on those annoying quotes, but then you'd just end up with a massive pile of names under every single post showing who gave them a "Thanks" or a "Groan."
It would basically make every single thread on the entire site look just as cluttered as the main landing page, specifically that online user list at the bottom where you see nearly a thousand different handles scrolling by.
In other words, it would be a total mess and feel way too crowded.

I’d be more than happy to personally slash the number of those "quote + agree" posts by just deleting them.

As for this "like" option—besides being totally pointless, it would just be ten times more irritating...

😲

I mean, surely we wouldn't want a list of everyone who clicked on a post appearing right underneath it, right? 😕
It would be much better if there was just an option to see who liked something 🤣 with a quick click, kind of like a "who reacted" feature. Although, honestly, the whole like-dislike idea feels a little bit pointless anyway.

Yeah, that would basically show up right under every single post (assuming you actually click on someone's comment).
And when you consider there are several thousand active users on this Forum, those likes are going to start piling up under every post pretty fast.

I mean, look, if it’s just something you see when you specifically click on a post—like if there was a "view individual post" option—then it doesn't sound half bad. But having a list of everyone who clicked on a post sitting right there in the middle of a thread? That’s just absolute madness to me! Even if we had an option like on Facebook, where it just shows a couple of names or a total count and lets you click to expand the full list if you really care, I still think it’s way over the top. If someone is curious, they can go ahead and click, but I honestly don't want that list cluttering up my view every single time.

Yeah, that's exactly the point, and that's how it should work.

It’s not quite like Facebook, though. On Facebook, you get those threaded replies to comments, whereas here on the forum, quoting is just the standard way to go. What we're talking about is basically just that function where you upvote or downvote someone's reputation.

As for the list itself, you'd have a list of users who gave that person a Thanks or a groan, and normally, that would just show up in the little window directly under the post. The size of that window would just depend on how many people actually used the feature.
So, for example, if I drop a funny post over on Marketplace, you might see a whole bunch of users listed right under that post indicating whether they liked it or not.

Henry Cox78 said:Clearly, the trolls aren't feeling this. Now we need to hear from some actually constructive members like me and a few others on the Forum to see what the real consensus is. Personally, I'm all for 👍

Yeah, so I'm against it, and I'll try to lay out my reasoning constructively ☕

Basically, by introducing this completely useless like/dislike system (let's just call it the stupidity feature), we'd lose the entire point of 👍 and 👎 emojis—and honestly, it’d be a shame to further diminish our already meager supply of smileys.

Furthermore, I worry that adding this nonsense will make the site start looking like Facebook, which would likely drive about 30% of our users away instantly—a massive loss for this community. Let's be real: once we go down that road, we might as well let people post selfies and pictures of their pets here too. Beyond that, implementing these kinds of "innovations" strips the site of its originality; it wouldn't be recognizable as one of those niche forums known for having almost zero bells and whistles. It would be like fixing a server error just so the 503 and 504 errors disappear. Honestly, without those glitches popping up at least three times a day, the site would lose its identity and just blend into the gray sea of other perfectly functioning forums. 🙄

Also, there's the inevitable fear of abuse. Knowing Americans, there isn't a single thing we can't find a way to misuse, so I think it's better to stick to the old adage: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." I can already see a mob of frustrated trolls daily liking everything the moderators post, sucking up to them so hard they won't be able to sit down for three months. Add in the classic American tendency toward playing favorites, and I fear the moderators wouldn't be able to carry out their god-given duties with the same fairness and care they show now. ☕

But that's not even the biggest issue. Can you imagine this place without 5,000 daily quote + signature posts? Total daily post counts would drop by at least two per user, which for constructive types like me—who only post when there's an actual need—would mean dropping to maybe one or two posts a day. If this option were introduced, even the legendary heavyweights who used to go by Mr. Constructive wouldn't be able to maintain their average of 60 posts a day. I'm talking, of course, about the esteemed user Ris, whose contributions were vital here until he was kicked off due to political maneuvering from The White House. ☕

I hope my post meets with some positive feedback and that the idea of bringing this stupidity to the Forum is rejected before it's even taken seriously. Thanks. ☕

I guess when you were a teenager, you probably wished people would just hit the like button on your posts like they do on Facebook, but I suppose that’s just not how things work here.

I guess I’m still not on board with this.

Well, I guess it would cut down on the spam—and maybe let people who are too lazy to actually type out a response just sign off on an opinion they already agree with.

It's a bad idea.

We used to have this user rating system on the old forum—if anyone even remembers that—where you could rate other members. If someone liked you, they’d give you five stars; if they hated your guts, they'd give you one. We all ended up with these numerical averages, kind of like being graded in school.
It was stupid, and honestly, it was right to get rid of it.
