We've heard reports that some users are having trouble accessing Reddit. Specifically, people trying to connect from The New York Times offices or certain college dorms are getting blocked...

If you're running into this issue, send us the IP address you're using so our tech team can dig into it. We noticed these access problems popping up right after we migrated our servers.

You can find your current IP address at www.ipflu.com and email it over to admin@reddit.com. Don't worry, we'll keep it private 🙂.

P.S.
Let’s be real: this message is pretty useless for the people actually stuck behind the block if they’re all on the same network. So, if you *can* get online and hear someone complaining about being locked out, please point them in this direction. Thanks.

Just one question 🙂
Has anyone actually stopped to consider that their employer—say, The New York Times—might have strictly forbidden this kind of activity through a code of conduct?
wtf???

Usually, when people get hit with a block or some kind of restriction, they at least get a notification
but it would be even more entertaining if the explanation was just left completely blank—like if you try to visit The New York Times and get shut down, yet somehow you can still access some other random news site without any issues

I can't seem to get into Reddit using my old username, though I can still get in with this one 🤷
It keeps telling me it can't connect to the server whenever I try logging in with the old account...

Weird. I can post on some threads just fine, but on the ones where I used to be active, I’m totally locked out—can't even see my old posts anymore.
weird 😕

I couldn't get things working through the usual channels either—so I ended up taking this route instead.

I can't access my old account anymore ☕

Maybe I can slip my question in here. I’ve been lurking on Reddit for quite some time now, but I just couldn't manage to actually register; every single attempt would end with that dreaded "incorrect username and/or password" error message.😕It honestly makes no sense to me, and after trying countless times—only to get temporarily blocked before being able to try again🙄(what else can I say except that I'm persistent?)—I finally managed to get through. Out of all the possible handles, which, by the way, sounded incredibly cool, the system finally accepted me as this hypersensitive user with some sort of jumbled, messy password🙄just like that.😲And then, when I see people walking around with a hundred different profiles...😲well, how is that even possible?!
Not too long ago, a colleague of mine was over and wanted to sign up here herself (as if she wouldn't figure it out on her own, though clearly she did) so I could help her out. And it was the exact same ordeal.😕Then I called up a friend of mine who is actually quite tech-savvy, and he said he’d swing by to take a look; meanwhile, I'm typing in the nickname she chose along with the password she picked, only to be met with "thank you for your report..."😲
I just don't understand it at all. Is there something I'm doing wrong... or what exactly is going on?

Look, speaking as an IT admin at my job, I can tell you we don't have access to any Reddit threads or even major news sites. It’s just corporate policy.🙂
Everything depends on which specific sites get added to the whitelist for restricted users within certain departments.
And that all comes down to house policy.🙂

I know exactly how this works
🙂
but if you decide to block one thing while leaving the other wide open, it really just opens up a whole new set of questions, doesn't it?

And there are always more questions to ask.🙂
The most common one is usually, "Why am I blocked from Reddit, but my colleague can still access it?"

Say you block Reddit, but you leave a site like CNN wide open.
CNN provides the news, whereas Reddit is mostly just conversation. So, people end up blocking the discussion platform entirely just to avoid the "chat," while they still go over to read the headlines and call it a day.

There was some chatter going on earlier about being locked out of both the office network and the monitors
If the company policy is that you shouldn't be accessing stuff unless it's strictly for work, then honestly, that's their right to decide
But here’s the thing—if a company starts blocking certain things while leaving others wide open, we aren't talking about policy anymore; we're talking about censorship, and that's something that really shouldn't be happening in a professional environment

Here is an example. This shouldn't cause any issues since it's just a link to a news portal that happens to host a forum.😁

Allowed:
www.nytimes.com
Forbidden:
www.nytimes.com/forum

That isn't censorship. It's just a ban on the forum itself...

It’s all fine by me, unless someone manages to sneak onto CNN with this kind of setup
🙂

It’s highly probable that’s the case 😁

Prika, here's a Reddit of similar size and traffic. I’ve been hanging out there forever and never saw a single error or any notice about backups. It’s never gone down on me.

Why don't you just email everyone and ask where they host their forums? See what setups they're running. I used to go back and forth with the old admin, and he was actually a fair guy. He might be able to show you a few tricks of the trade.

People are fed up with these constant 503 and 505 errors, and honestly, they're starting to hate you for it. Everyone wants to be liked, so do something about it. Choose love for your followers.
And seriously, fire those idiots who are messing up the ads. The layout looks like a failed high school web design project. It’s embarrassing, man. Hire some actual professionals and step up your game.
Anyway, cheers. Don't blame me for the advice. I'm just being real.
