In the US, we call it Resident Evil: Degeneration, though over in Japan, they titled it Biohazard: Degeneration.👍

For me, Resident Evil is at its peak here because the plot actually holds water—plus, I’m a huge fan of the animated format.

Honestly, "Degeneration" packs way more punch than all three live-action movies combined. Not trying to sound like a broken record, but I’ve mentioned this animated flick before.

The first three entries released between 2002 and 2007 are nothing more than pale imitations of the Resident Evil games. They were a total letdown, so this animated movie felt like a breath of fresh air—just a heads-up for anyone who hasn't seen it: this isn't technically part four or a direct sequel.
Those first three movies could have been significantly better if the studios hadn't prioritized quick cash over actual quality. Between the subpar acting and the messy directing, everything was just... off. That's why I left these ratings on IMDb:

Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) - 3/10
Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) - 3/10
Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008) - 6/10

I haven't checked out Resident Evil: Degeneration yet. I usually find animated films lacking when it comes to this kind of subject matter, but I'll give it a look just to compare it to the live-action movies. As for the original trilogy, none of them really hit the mark for me. The acting was subpar, the action felt weak, and the zombies were more laughable than scary. The whole series was a massive disappointment. If I absolutely had to pick a favorite, I’d go with the second one because of Nemesis.

Just watch it and you will see it's way more intense and generally much better overall.

To me, the first Resident Evil movie stands out as the best of the bunch. I think part of the reason is that Anderson didn't try so hard to cram in every single game element—something he handled pretty clumsily in the second and third installments (though, to be fair, they were still highly entertaining despite their massive flaws). For instance, he completely botched Nemesis by turning him into a pushover, and in the third film, he just swapped Jill for Claire without making any meaningful changes. I actually read the original script for the third movie where only Jill was featured; she had the exact same lines that Claire ended up delivering in the final cut.
The first film captured a much better atmosphere than, say, Extinction, where they pivoted entirely toward action and replaced genuine horror with loud, jarring noises (which is ironic, considering the games eventually took that same direction starting with the fourth entry). Beyond that, I really loved the Beltrami-Manson pairing; it’s a shame they didn't team up for the subsequent films. I also have a huge soft spot for Milla 🙈, which is why the live-action movies will always rank higher for me than Degeneration. To my mind, Degeneration felt mediocre at best—it functioned more like a glorified commercial for Resident Evil 5 (promoting the Tricell corporation and all that) rather than a standalone film. The acting was disastrous, though that was somewhat expected given that the Capcom folks chose the same actor who voiced Leon in the fourth game. That being said, I will admit that Degeneration wasn't boring.

I haven't actually sat down to watch Resident Evil: Degeneration yet, and honestly, those live-action movies are just... okay. I can't really pick out one single favorite among them... they all kind of blend together

By the way, they’re currently filming the fourth installment, Resident Evil: Afterlife. It looks like Paul W. S. Anderson is back behind the camera and handling the script again, plus Milla Jovovich is returning for the role.

the third one is simply inferior to the first two

and Degeneration doesn't really belong in the same category as this third entry, so it probably shouldn't even be on the list...

Honestly, the second one is just straight-up trash, and even the third installment isn't much better—it’s just slightly less terrible than the second.
The first one isn't exactly a cinematic masterpiece either, but compared to those two disasters, it feels like a goddamn work of art.

I haven't actually sat down to watch Degeneration yet, so I can't really weigh it up against the others.

I know I was more excited than I've ever been when I bought the gameplay footage, but instead, I just got a full-on review of the Resident Evil movie 😍
At first, I thought they were great and all, but now I'm just completely let down by all the sequels (I don't even count Degeneration among those starring Milla) because they don't follow the game's plot at all.
With a storyline like that, the movie could have easily had a different name entirely. Romero should have taken the Resident Evil title like he originally intended, and the first film should have featured the S.T.A.R.S. team, Wesker, Birkin, and the rest of the crew.
Raccoon City should have been the main setting, with the S.T.A.R.S. members as the core characters. 🤷 Simple as that.
I've been a massive fan of the game since '96 when the PlayStation first came out, so it's just such a shame we never got a high-quality adaptation that actually does justice to the game.

It sucks, but what can you do when they just wanted to cash in on the hype surrounding video games without putting even an ounce of actual effort into the movies themselves?

None of them work for me—honestly, I think horror as a genre is just low-quality and pretty bad. It’s honestly kind of ridiculous.

I honestly feel that the Resident Evil franchise is best when you look at it in the order of Extinction, then Degeneration, followed by Apocalypse.

It looks like everything is settled here, and by all accounts, Extinction is taking the win.

I actually voted for Degeneration, but I was honestly expecting the first installment to come out on top. So, seeing the third one holding such a massive lead is a bit of a shock—but hey, I guess that’s exactly what polls are for, right? To see what the community actually gravitates toward.

It’s pretty telling, though—in a different poll, X-Men pulled in 25 votes in just a single day, while this one has only managed 24 votes after three full days. It just goes to show how much better and more popular the X-Men series really is compared to this.

Resident Evil: Degeneration is easily the peak of the franchise, and honestly, I’m just sitting here hoping we get more sequels that actually hit like that. Most of these movies are straight-up garbage because, first off, the characters and the plot don't have even a shred of connection to the actual games... the characters feel like they were just tossed in there as nothing more than window dressing to pretend there's some link to the source material. And second: Who is Alice? Where the hell are the real icons? We should be seeing Leon Kennedy, Claire, and Chris Redfield, or Jill Valentine, and all the chaos that actually revolves around them. The animated RE projects are handled so much better—the stories are solid, the plots actually make sense, everything is a perfect ten... whereas the live-action movies are just massive failures...

While Sony Pictures is gearing up for Resident Evil: Afterlife, the 3D sequel set to hit theaters on August 27, 2010, Bloody Disgusting has exclusively (and officially) learned that the studio is already eyeing the fifth installment. Even though Milla Jovovich in Afterlife is a done deal, keeping
her in the mix is likely becoming a massive expense and a logistical headache, despite her marriage to producer Paul W. S. Anderson. Rather than pushing the current narrative further, the studio
is actually mapping out a bit of a reboot, currently referred to as Resident Evil: Begins. It is still quite a ways off, but the concept involves reimagining the saga of an elite military squad
battling a rogue supercomputer and a swarm of scientists who turned into flesh-eating monsters following a lab disaster.

Recently, the producer of the Resident Evil movie, Jeremy Bolt, stated that these claims are inaccurate and that everyone has completely misinterpreted the situation regarding a fifth installment being a reboot. In reality, the fourth film, Afterlife, serves as the start of a new trilogy. That is all there is to it. Furthermore, Milla Jovovich mentioned on Twitter that a fifth film will happen if Afterlife performs well enough at the box office—which it certainly will, considering every single sequel has outperformed its predecessor.
