Little Luke will be turning 6 on April 14, 2010.
He was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor back in March 2007.
He had to undergo emergency surgery just two weeks later, but unfortunately, he’s been paralyzed since the procedure.
It’s been such a rough road—chemo, spinal taps, losing consciousness, blood sugar issues, even fluid buildup around his heart and lungs. He was actually supposed to be home spending Christmas 2009 with the family, but things took a turn when he started struggling to breathe. His parents had to rush him to the hospital, where doctors started him on a new round of chemo that he has to receive in the hospital for two months.
Just three days ago, things got even harder when they diagnosed him with T-cell lymphoma, and he ended up having an epileptic seizure as a side effect of the chemo.
His mom and dad are right there by his side through all of this, and his older brother is going through it with them too.
So, I have a huge favor to ask you all:
On April 24, 2010, at 7:00 PM, there's going to be a play called "Hude Beteg" over at Zelina Community College. Tickets are $10
The whole thing is a fundraiser, and every single cent goes directly to helping Little Luke.
If you can make it, please, please come out.
It’s a comedy show performed in that classic local dialect, and it's a great way to support LITTLE Luke!

Calling on all kind souls with B-negative blood: we need your help for 21-year-old Vesna Zlatovic from Brcko, who is currently battling leukemia.

If you’re in the Brcko area or anywhere else in the US and have B-negative blood, please reach out to the main hospital in Brcko. Don't worry, they won't be drawing blood right away. There will be an initial screening first, and if you're cleared as a SATISFACTORY DONOR, travel expenses will be covered for a trip to Mexico City.

For those with B-negative blood living in Mexico City, you can head straight to the NATIONAL BLOOD CENTER at 39 Svet Sava Street, Mexico. Just ask for Vesna Zlatovic, protocol number 1132.

I am forwarding an email I received.

We are Sonya and Miljenko Bistrović from Akron. We are the parents of little Luke, born July 4, 2008, without the final part of his intestine or an anal opening (diagnosis: Imperforate Anus). Immediately after birth, our child was transferred from the maternity ward in Akron to the hospital in Chicago, where he underwent an initial procedure to create a stoma (an abdominal opening for bowel movements). This was merely the first of several surgeries, and even then, it was clear this wouldn't be a permanent solution. The surgeons in Chicago warned us that once Luke turns one, he will need to undergo highly complex surgery for intestinal and anal reconstruction. Because this is such a rare diagnosis and our local surgeons lack sufficient experience with these specific procedures, most parents in our situation seek help abroad. Through friends who share a similar fate—since their child was also born with this condition—we made contact with the Buzzi Children's Clinic in Milan, which specializes in these types of operations. They have agreed to take Luke for treatment and are confident in a successful outcome, as they perform these routinely and can guarantee bowel control, something the doctors here in the States could not promise. Two surgeries are expected within a few months. For the first one, we expect a call with a specific date late this year or early next year. The costs for travel, lodging, translators, medical treatment, and follow-up care in Milan far exceed our modest means.

The reality is, besides Luke, we have four other smart, beautiful, and thank God healthy children between the ages of 4 and 14. After finishing college and securing a good job in the US, Miljenko fell seriously ill; due to a brain tumor during his prime years, he had to retire on disability. My profession is chemistry teacher, but I am currently on maternity leave until Luke turns three. Given the dire financial situation we find ourselves in, I considered returning to work after Luke's first birthday, but because of his illness and the specialized care he requires—which a daycare center simply couldn't provide—I cannot do so.
As they say, misfortunes never come alone. Two weeks ago, investors knocked on our door regarding the renovations they performed on our house between 2004 and 2006. While we have managed to settle most of the debt, there is still a balance of $19,000.00 remaining. These investors are now threatening us with lawsuits and liens, demanding full payment by the end of the year. We were counting on those funds, as we have had that amount saved in our account at Ljubljana Bank for years. The attorney handling our case promised he would soon be able to release our frozen funds. However, time is running out, we aren't in a position to take out a loan, and help is nowhere to be found... We face the very real danger that not only our youngest, sickest boy, Luke, but our entire large family, may soon find ourselves without a roof over our heads. As parents, we are doing everything in our power to save what we have fought so hard to pay off, but we cannot do this alone—we need help!
Therefore, we ask all kind-hearted people to help us in this difficult situation according to your means—even if it is just by sharing this email. Attached, we are sending a photo of our little Luke along with some family photos, as well as Luke's discharge papers from the hospital showing the diagnosis. I am also attaching Miljenko's most recent discharge summary (from November 19th of this year) describing his diagnosis, as well as the documentation regarding his disability pension showing the loss of work capacity due to illness. Look, you guys really need to double-check those emails on Google when they land in your inbox, because some of them can sit there for years before they actually reach you.

Emails like this one can often be scams, so you really need to watch your step to make sure nobody gets played. First off, just like Angela Wright mentioned, do a quick Google search to see what's what. Second, you can forward these kinds of suspicious emails to the US Cyber Emergency Response Team at hoax[a]cert.hr. They’ll run an analysis on the message, cross-reference it against their existing database, and get back to you within 24 hours to let you know if it's a fake.

So, here I am again, issuing another plea to everyone on this forum who feels compelled to post about humanitarian drives—especially those isolated cases where there’s no specific medical diagnosis mentioned, but instead, a bank account number is highlighted in bold without any further contact info. I’ve personally received several emails and flyers that turned out to be complete scams, and honestly, I think the media bears a significant amount of responsibility for that. Some were obviously suspicious from the jump, but others... well, they were just incredibly well-disguised.

Please, just be careful and do your due diligence beforehand. 🙂

There’s a big blood drive happening this Saturday, September 6th, 2010. It’s being organized by local soccer fans, though that's really beside the point. The goal is to get as many people involved as possible to help those who truly need it. Let's not wait for someone else to step up; we can do something good and humane ourselves... I’ve only just noticed this thread, so I wanted to jump in and share an update:

Here is the situation: Hathor Tattoo is participating in a charity drive
Specifically, the initiative is supporting children battling malignant diseases.

On October 22nd, a massive charity event will be held at the Aquarius A1 / A2 club on the second floor. There will be a lineup of twelve American DJs performing, and every cent of the ticket proceeds will go directly to:
the sisters Petra ('95) and Mariana ('97) Stiblo, who are fighting cystic fibrosis,
Mandi Sebalj ('93), who is dealing with juvenile systemic scleroderma, and
Stephen Stjepan Bobinac ('04), who is battling leukemia.

So,you can support Stephen and the girls simply by purchasing a ticket, but beyond just buying tickets, you can also help by choosing to get tattooed at my studio. From October 15th through November 1st, I am completely waiving all my earnings; essentially, every dollar earned from tattoos during that window goes straight to these little heroes.

The "Bon Voluntas" group was started by a bunch of grad students over at the University of Chicago Faculty of Economics during their
"Change Management" course. The whole idea? To actually make a change—and
that starts with us. We kicked things off with "Bon Voluntas," which basically translates to good will!
