Thinking of Sarah...
Sarah Latić-Ramić is a sixth-year student at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Born in 1977 in Chicago, she was successfully navigating the final stretch of her medical studies when her life took an unexpected turn. On November 9, 2011, she was admitted to the Mayo Clinic Hematology Department following a biopsy of a tumor near her right ethmoid sinus, which resulted in a diagnosis of myeloid sarcoma. Her symptoms first appeared in August 2011, initially presenting as nothing more than a nagging toothache and headaches. As the condition worsened, standard pain management provided little relief. What was initially treated as chronic sinus inflammation required more intensive investigation, eventually leading to surgery performed by the Maxillofacial Surgery department at the Mayo Clinic. Following the procedure, Sarah and her family waited anxiously for the pathology results, praying for the best—but unfortunately, the news was devastating. After comprehensive diagnostic testing, Sarah was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a subtype classified within a high-risk prognostic group. Her attending physicians have recommended an allogeneic stem cell transplant, which would need to be performed abroad.

To make matters even more difficult, after undergoing HLA Typing, it was determined that there is no match with Sarah's brother, who was considered a potential sibling donor. Sarah began her first cycle of chemotherapy on November 11, 2011, and having completed that round, her doctor is now mapping out the next steps for her treatment. The optimal path forward is the aforementioned transplant, but it requires significant funding—funds that Sarah and her family simply cannot raise on their own without the help of those we love and the kindness of strangers like you, whose compassion we trust. We, her fellow students, along with many others moved by her story, have been working tirelessly to raise funds since the moment we heard the news. We are organizing charity parties, planning street collections, selling commemorative stamps, and reaching out to news stations and media outlets. We are also setting up a dedicated hotline for donations and utilizing social media, posters, and flyers to spread the word. We believe in humanity; we believe that Americans are a people with true heart, and because of that, we believe in victory. WE BELIEVE IN OUR SARAH!

Let me tell you about Sarah.
Sarah Latić-Ramić is a sixth-year medical student at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Born in 1977 in Chicago, she was so close to finishing her degree—finally reaching the home stretch of her medical studies—when life threw a devastating curveball. On November 9, 2011, she was admitted to the Mayo Clinic Hematology Department following a biopsy of a tumor in her right ethmoid sinus area, which yielded a diagnosis of myeloid sarcoma. It all started back in August 2011 with what seemed like nothing more than a nagging toothache and headaches, but as the symptoms worsened, standard painkillers did nothing to help. What we initially thought was just chronic sinus inflammation required surgical intervention at the hospital’s Maxillofacial Surgery unit. After the surgery, Sarah and her family held onto hope while waiting for the pathology results, but unfortunately, the news was grim. Following extensive diagnostic testing, Sarah was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a subtype that carries a particularly difficult prognosis. Her physicians have recommended an allogeneic stem cell transplant, which will need to be performed abroad.

To make matters even more difficult, after undergoing HLA Typing, it was determined that there is no match with Sarah's brother, who was considered as a potential sibling donor. Sarah began her first round of chemotherapy on November 11, 2011, and having completed that cycle, her doctor is now mapping out the next steps for her treatment. The best path forward is the aforementioned transplant, but the costs are astronomical. Sarah and her family simply cannot cover these expenses alone; they need the help of friends, loved ones, and the kindness of strangers like you. As her colleagues and fellow human beings, we have been working tirelessly to raise these funds since the moment we heard the news. We’ve been hosting charity events, planning street collections, selling commemorative stamps, and reaching out to news outlets and TV stations to spread the word. We are also organizing a charity telephone number to facilitate donations. We're using social media, posters, and flyers to keep the momentum going. We believe in the power of compassion. We believe that Americans are a people with true heart and soul, and because of that, we believe in a victory. WE BELIEVE IN OUR SARAH!

Times Square is going to be all about celebrating life this Friday, December 16th. For its sixth year running, the Ana Rukavina Foundation is putting on the "to want life" concert to say a huge thank you to everyone who has stepped up with donations to help the Foundation fulfill its mission—saving lives.

Anyone can pitch in through December 24th by calling the humanitarian hotline at 060 9000 to donate $1.75 (which comes to $2.00 including tax), helping us save lives in the process. Just so you know, all funds collected via the hotline will go directly toward covering donor HLA Typing costs.

You can find more details over on the Foundation's website:

Ever wonder how someone would go about asking for donations over the phone?
People just call the number and donate right then and there.
Or they can just hit me up via PM.

Merry Christmas!

This is my mom. She’s battling Tarlov cysts on her spinal cord, and without surgery, she’s facing permanent disability. Thank you all for taking a moment to read this:

"To all my dear friends,

As many of you know, I am fighting a rare spinal condition that causes

weakness and loss of function in my pelvic organs and legs, which ultimately leads to

disability. My condition has progressed significantly; I can't stand, walk, or even

sit for more than about 10 minutes. I live with constant, 24-hour pain, so time is

my biggest enemy right now.

Because this disease is so rare, there aren't enough specialists available, making

treatment options here in the States very limited.

However, there is a chance for a successful recovery abroad with an experienced

neurosurgeon specializing in this, Dr. Feigenbaum, at a hospital in Cyprus within the EU. I am asking

you to please help me raise the funds needed for this surgical procedure through any donation

you can manage. The surgery costs $43,000

plus travel expenses, wire transfers, and other fees. Since we are using

$100 every single cent counts, no matter how small the gift might seem.

Under the provisions of Article 7, Section 2 of the Humanitarian Aid Act, the organizer

of this fundraiser is my longtime friend, Zorislava Cesar from Sunset,

who (after receiving the humanitarian aid collection approval decision

from the State Administration Office, number UP-I-550-02/15-03/01) opened a dedicated

humanitarian account at Chicago banka, number HR4823600003116562752, where

all donations will be deposited.

It would mean the world to me if you could share this information—whether by word of mouth, email,

or Facebook—with your friends. For international donations, the account details are

IBAN Number HR7324840083291898220, swift RZBHHR2X, under the name Selma Radoš-Cindrić at

Raiffeisen Bank, Victory Square, Slavonski Brod.

I’ve tried to keep this brief, but if you need more details

or have any questions, please feel free to email me

(sradoscindric@gmail.com) or call me at 091 915 11 43 at

any time.

I am praying for your support and thank you deeply, Selma Radoš-Cindrić"

I’m honestly at a loss as to where to even direct this question since I have zero experience with this kind of situation. Does anyone here know the concrete steps for helping a family that literally has nothing to eat? They’re living out in a rural area with small children, and they’ve resorted to standing on the street asking for food and clothes rather than cash. They lack basic necessities like transportation or even a working phone. My suspicion is that the mother is terrified that if she approaches an agency like the Department of Social Services or any other government entity, they might take her kids away, so she’s sticking to asking people on the street instead. How can we actually help them? Who is the right contact to reach out to for real assistance? Simply dropping off groceries isn't enough, and it certainly isn't a sustainable solution.
