By the way, since we're on the subject of critics, Outlander has a 4.7 on Rotten Tomatoes, and Ebert only gave it two stars.

You've got a point...you shouldn't be shocked by how our distributors act...but still...it's impossible not to be. I mean, they'll put garbage like "My Best Friend's Wedding" or "Big Stan" straight to DVD here in the USA, but they won't even give a shot to something like "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford".

Anyway, when I was writing this, if I recall correctly, the movie had only played at the Cannes Film Festival, where it mostly picked up positive reviews...and Rotten...well, Rotten is Rotten...only a few films actually do well there...but clearly the audience likes it, because a 7.1/10 on IMDb isn't bad. True, not many people have seen it yet, but if it were actually that terrible...it wouldn't even hit a 5...at least that's my take. We'll see...😁

Nah... because they're saying you shouldn't be surprised, even though it's basically impossible not to be...😉

It's like saying you shouldn't eat sweets because they make you gain weight, but still... sometimes it's just impossible to resist when, say, those cheesecake slices are that good...😁👍

Heh...

I take a look at what this movie is actually about and I can't help but think, "this is going to be total garbage." It doesn't matter if the plot involves Vikings fighting monsters; at the end of the day, it's just your run-of-the-mill action flick.
Execution matters far more than the initial concept.
As one fellow reviewer on IMDb put it regarding Outlander:
"So if you happen to like action movies and don't ask for too much depth in the story, this will provide you with a 90 minutes amusement worth the time".

That isn't quite enough for my tastes. 🙂

The movie was alright.

Caught it yesterday and honestly? I liked it. It’s definitely a massive step up from Pathfinder.

I caught this last night and honestly, I’m pretty stoked with how it turned out. It feels like this awesome mashup of Pathfinder, The Thirteenth Warrior, and Predator. I really dug the opening where Cain (Caviezel) is speaking an alien language, and his suit actually reminds me of those Asgardian suits you see in those Stargate Atlantis episodes (specifically the First Contact and Lost Tribe ones).

The whole movie has this gritty, raw vibe, especially with Wulfric, who looks just like Éomer. They even have a character like Boromir, though he’s way more of a jokester than the Boromir we know from Minas Tirith. 😁

I was also really glad they included those intense scenes on Kainnanov's planet (well, specifically Morwenov's planet, which the Kainanov people messed with)—that’s exactly the kind of stuff you usually miss in movies like this.

And obviously, a movie like this wouldn't be complete without Ron Perlman stepping in to play the rival king, Gunnar. 😁 Too bad he gets taken out so early in the story.

I actually liked it better than Pathfinder. There are some plot holes—the beacon destruction scene toward the end felt a bit off—but overall, it’s a great movie to just sit back and relax. The story reminded me quite a bit of Beowulf, which made it even more enjoyable for me.

Yeah... I watched it too... I mean, the movie... it starts off perfectly... great scenes... the concept... the acting...
but then, after about an hour and ten minutes... 👍 everything just falls apart for me... 👎 there are so many clichés and over-the-top tropes... so what starts as a relatively good film turns into a completely mediocre SFakcich... 😕

I caught the trailer at AMC Theatres the other day, and honestly, it looks pretty solid. Since it’s been quite a while since I sat down for anything starring James Caviezel, I’m actually looking forward to this one hitting digital.
I had a hunch the producers behind "Lord of the Rings" were involved😁, because as soon as the trailer popped up, the vibe felt eerily similar.

Well, I don't think it's quite that much like LOTR. Just imagine 13 Warriors with slightly more tech (though there will be less of it)... it's more like Beowulf meets A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court meets Halo.

I wouldn't really know, since I haven't sat down to watch either Beowulf or The Thirteenth Warrior yet.

I watched this ages ago and I guess I agree that it feels pretty similar to Beowulf meeting Beowulf meets A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Honestly, Outlander was actually better and more interesting for me, even if it's really just an average flick with a shallow plot. It’s fun enough and mediocre, definitely worth a watch at least once when you're just killing time... it left a decent impression on me. 👍

Has anyone else caught this movie yet?

I honestly don't get how this just hit theaters here this month when it feels like it’s been available on DVD everywhere else in the world already. 😕

That movie was honestly incredible. I really loved it 🙂.

The movie is entertaining, and frankly, that’s about the best praise I can offer. 🙂

Truly dreadful

I thought the movie was great... though they really could have cooked up something better for a sequel... just my two cents.

Man, look, you can lose some time on this one if you really want to, but honestly? Just do it once in your life so you can say you got it over with, because I am never, ever touching this again. My rating: 2/10
