Voltaren: Pros and cons?

Man, after this whole recent mess with Voltaren and those supposed side effects—you know, the heart attack stuff—I’m honestly at a loss. When I get my period, nothing touches the pain except Voltaren tablets; they are absolute lifesavers for me. And now these people show up out of nowhere making a huge deal about heart attacks.

I only pop them maybe two or three days a month.

He was taking them, I believe, almost every single time he had a splitting headache... I can't say for sure how frequently that actually was...

His face turned bright red, and I honestly couldn't tell if he was breaking out in spots or if his entire facial structure was actually starting to swell. They were out somewhere when it happened, so they rushed him to the ER. The doctor told him that this kind of reaction can happen at any moment; it doesn't matter how many times he took them before without an issue...

Then again, that’s just how it goes with any medication.

The FDA says we gotta take it slow.

So basically, it all comes down to one thing: do you have heart issues? If you do, watch your step, because this study makes Voltaren look almost as risky as smoking cigarettes. If you don't... well, then this research probably doesn't mean much to you.

Just don't go overboard with these meds, okay? That's the bottom line.

BTW, NSAIDs aren't exactly "harmless" little pills, and women tend to overdo it way too often when dealing with period cramps. That can turn into a massive headache given what they do to your stomach. Using NSAIDs actually accounts for 24% of stomach ulcers—only trailing behind H. Pylori, which causes about 65%.

That's why they were trying to develop a whole new generation of drugs, like Vioxx. Basically, the biggest issue with NSAIDs is how aggressive they are on the stomach lining. Side effects like liver toxicity or blood clots/heart attacks weren't even considered the main focus for over 20 years since Voltaren first hit the market.

I’ve mostly stuck to using Voltaren gel specifically for tendon and muscle aches..
For back issues—think slipped discs and all that fun stuff—it didn't really do much for me, so I didn't bother. I've leaned more on ibuprofen quite a bit; I know that's also tough on the stomach, though maybe just a little less so, I guess..

For me, Ketoral triggers side effects that feel a hundred times worse than Voltaren. I actually think it sits in that sweet spot between ibuprofen and Ketoral—it works effectively without wrecking my stomach...

Does taking pills cause stomach issues too?

Just kidding, no... they aren't great for your stomach—that's actually why doctors swap them out—but they can definitely mess with you. For me, personally, they were basically a one-way ticket to constant diarrhea...

So, I guess swallowing isn't the move, but what about using it rectally?

It's already been proven that Vioxx causes heart issues if you take it every single day for more than a year. To me, all this talk about Voltaren feels like they're just trying to clear the way to sell us the next big thing that isn't an NSAID, but still... I wouldn't be surprised if it actually does bump up your risk of a heart attack if you're on it daily for years on end.

Personally, I would never stick to the same med for years—regardless of whether there's proof it increases my risk of a heart attack or not.

But hey, Walter Myers4, look at it this way: if Voltaren does increase your chance of a heart attack, it might simultaneously lower your chances of dying from cancer😎

It’s honestly pretty rare for me to be in enough pain to actually reach for a pill. I’ve taken Voltaren a handful of times in my life, but if you ask me? I think it’s way overhyped. I’ve been on Diane for ages now, and based on some of the research I've read, I probably should have kicked the bucket a long time ago 😁

I honestly don't get why everyone is freaking out over Voltaren all of a sudden. I mean, look, every single medication has its own set of side effects, right? In certain situations—like if you have specific underlying conditions or if you're mixing it with other stuff—things can get pretty serious. I actually know this woman who took some hormone therapy and ended up with stomach bleeding that required surgery.
We really shouldn't overreact because, at the end of the day, no pill is totally risk-free. It’s always probably a good idea to just check in with your doctor before you start taking anything new.

Ugh, I had to pop some Voltaren tonight on an empty stomach. Now my heart feels like it’s skipping beats. 😁

They claim naproxen works almost exactly like Voltaren, just with fewer side effects, I guess.

Look, Voltaren works wonders for me, but man, it hits me like a freight train sometimes. 😁

If you head over to RxList and search for diclofenac (Voltaren), you’ll see it’s prescription-only, accompanied by bold, ominous warnings about potential heart attacks and GI bleeding. I wasn't exactly unaware of the risks, but since I deal with migraines and this is the one thing that actually works, I’m going to keep taking it. (Let's just hope the FDA doesn't pull it from the shelves entirely).
