Logan's Run (1976)

Anyone else here remember that 1976 sci-fi classic, Logan's Run, starring Michael York? I’ve always thought that movie was genuinely top-tier. Honestly, I’ve sat through it two or three times now and it still holds up. It follows this young guy and girl trying to escape a futuristic society and head out into the wilderness just to survive, all because they're trying to dodge this brutal law of being where everyone over 21 is basically forced to die.

Well, get this—a remake of the film is actually happening next year. Bryan Singer is set to direct, and he’s already got a massive track record with stuff like The Usual Suspects, the X-Men trilogy, and the upcoming Superman title, Superman Returns.

On top of that, like people have been saying before, Singer is a huge Star Trek fan and has expressed interest in taking the helm for Star Trek XI. There’s some chatter floating around that he might jump straight into Star Trek XI right after finishing Logan's Run, but for now, there isn't any official word on that.

The movie was alright, I guess, but what really fascinates me is actually something else:

It came out just a single year before Star Wars, yet it looks like it’s fifty years older. Honestly, the war scenes look so much better—and they probably cost 😲 too

It’s a decent enough film. Aside from the obvious financial incentives, I struggle to see what other motivations could possibly drive a studio to greenlight a remake of an original classic—because, let’s be honest, they certainly aren't doing it for the aesthetic merits. 😉

George Lucas has always been obsessed with investing heavily in special effects. After all, he even owns his own production company dedicated to it.

yeah, I get that, but I guess it's those kinds of comparisons that really show just how far ahead of its time Star Wars actually was

Singer is a great director, so I wouldn't be shocked if this ended up being better than the original...

I actually sat down and watched it last night.
While the visuals aren't actually all that bad, I found the soundtrack to be absolutely disastrous.
It’s this incredibly grating electronic music that reminds me far too much of those old-school Commodore 64 video games.

Great movie. I’ve seen it at least twice—though not nearly enough, if you ask me. If only they’d broadcast it again like they did with the excellent Forbidden Planet.

So, I was rewatching The Island the other day, and man, the opening sequence gave me such an intense sense of déjà vu from Logan's Run 😁 🙂

The original movie is absolute gold, but a remake? Hmmm... I have my doubts about whether they can actually pull it off.

My brain immediately went to a warning sign, flashing images of that Time Machine remake... 🙂

In my opinion The Island is essentially a modern reimagining of Logan's Run.
It is quite clearly updated to align with contemporary sensibilities regarding that same core conflict, offering much more intricate character development and nuanced motivations for the plot.
Consequently, I find that The Island actually functions as a superior film in terms of its narrative structure.
One might overlook the special effects simply due to the obvious differences in era and production budget.

Just take a look at the names of the lead characters; they even managed to retain the same initials:

Logan 5 ----- Lincoln 6 Echo
Jessica 6 ----- Jordan 2 Delta
