Think of a gamma camera as the polar opposite of an X-ray machine; while an X-ray sends radiation through you, this device doesn't emit anything at all. Instead, it acts as an incredibly sensitive detector designed to pick up on tiny traces of radioactivity already present within a patient's body.
By using this "gamma imaging" technique—essentially mapping out the gamma radiation emitted from within the patient after we've injected a radioisotope into their vein—we produce what's called a scintigram.
The beauty of scintigraphy is its versatility; you can basically use it to check almost any organ in the human body to evaluate both structure and function. It’s used to determine if things like the brain, thyroid, lungs, heart, liver, kidneys, bones, or blood vessels are actually healthy or if something is wrong.

There’s the Mayo Clinic, where they handle both CT scans and MRIs, though I’m not entirely certain if they offer scintigraphy; you might want to give them a call to check.

On another note: my husband had his scintigraphy done at the Mayo Clinic, and if I recall correctly, the wait for the actual procedure wasn't bad, though it took quite a while for the results to actually come back. That was several years ago, though.

No private practices perform bone scans because, beyond the astronomical cost of the equipment, they lack the specialized facilities required to safely store radioactive isotopes.
In Washington, D.C., if you need a bone scan, you have to go through the nuclear medicine departments at the Mayo Clinic or Johns Hopkins
I’m not entirely sure what the current wait times look like, but you might as well contact one of those major institutions directly and ask.

It looks like private practices aren't an option right now...
I actually scheduled this for December, but other doctors suggested getting it done within the next month just to make sure we don't miss our window...

Starting a new thread here. Does anyone know if there's a clinic around now that does bone imaging? My boyfriend's bones are really hurting—it’s been about three years since we started dating, and he’s always complaining about hip and leg pain from some old motorcycle accidents. He kept ignoring me whenever I suggested getting an X-ray or something, but lately, it's flared up again and seems way worse... I'm just not sure how to convince him to actually go, or if anyone knows a good private clinic where you don't have to wait 800 years like at a public hospital. Any leads would be great! 🙂

Why exactly does your boyfriend need a bone scan? It’s a pretty non-specific test. Usually, it functions more like a single piece of a larger puzzle—something doctors weigh alongside other diagnostic data and a physical exam. On its own, a bone scan is unlikely to pinpoint the root cause here. As for whether private clinics offer this service: yes, they do. To avoid sounding like an advertisement, just type "bone scan clinic" into Google. You'll find locations quickly enough.
My advice? He should start by checking in with his primary care physician. It’s entirely possible that standard tests at his doctor's office could yield a diagnosis much faster than jumping straight to a bone scan.
