Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Man, I’ve been counting down the days for this one. I was actually sweating with anticipation, and it definitely paid off. It’s classic Wes Anderson. Just regular people caught up in these totally absurd situations. Bill Murray is incredible. And you haven't seen Willem Dafoe like this before. All in all, a great movie, right up there with Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums.
I know that sounds biased, and it is... I just love Wes Anderson, I can't help it. I won't bore you with the plot, nobody cares about that, here's the link.
My only gripe is with AMC Theatres. The latest showtime they have for this film is 7:40 PM. What were they thinking? Like it's some kid's movie or something?

Wes Anderson has delivered a Great American Epic Movie that manages to pack in just about everything—tears, laughter, romance, lost sons, pirates, mythical sea creatures, and even a touch of existential dread... but above all, it boasts stunning production design and an incredible soundtrack. You’ve got David Bowie, Deva, The Stooges, and especially those Portuguese covers of Bowie, where the light samba version of Rebel Rebel really stands out. Plus, there's some great original synth music mixed in.
Since The Royal Tenenbaums was honestly one of the worst viewing experiences of my life, this was a genuinely pleasant surprise. He's still leaning heavily into that retro aesthetic, but given the eccentric production design, the gorgeous cinematography, and the animation, it doesn't feel forced or annoying at all. Because Anderson didn't handle the screenplay alone this time, the dialogue feels slightly less clunky and stiff, though I still feel his direction of actors is a bit of a weak point; on the flip side, he remains incredibly talented at using visual gags to drive most of the film's comedic beats.
And yeah, Willem Dafoe is fantastic.

He hasn't written a single film entirely by himself. Owen Wilson has been co-writing everything with him up to this point. As for the acting direction, that's just his trademark. That's how they act in all his films. It's his specific style... 😁

I’m a huge fan of Wes Anderson movies, and honestly, none of them have ever let me down, so I’m definitely checking this one out 👍

They’ve got such a weird directing style, sort of surreal writing, and those genius soundtracks... plus you get Bill Murray in almost all of them 👍

I haven't spent much time exploring the filmography of Wes Anderson. To be honest, I sat through The Royal Tenenbaums once and found it utterly tedious—just a confusing, aimless little photographic excursion that failed to land for me. However, Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou was a completely different story; it actually resonated. It seems Anderson's specific aesthetic has finally clicked in my brain after all this time.
A must-watch, in my opinion.

I haven't actually sat down to watch any of the Tenenbaums stuff yet—honestly, Rushmore wasn't really my vibe, but Bottle Rocket? Absolute masterpiece. 🙏

As for Life Aquatic, I'm definitely gonna give it a shot—fingers crossed I can finally carve out some time this Monday to catch it.

Yeah, I saw Rushmore too. It falls into that specific category of films that I recognize as being good, yet I find them almost impossible to actually sit through.

The only thing I actually missed out on was how Bottle Rocket ended up being titled amateur burglar in our local video rental stores back in the day.

As for Life Aquatic, I’m honestly a little hesitant to dive in because, judging by that hyper-stylized aesthetic, it feels like > hasn't quite hit his stride yet.
It just seems a bit 'too clever for its own good,' if you know what I mean.

The only movie that even comes close to matching those flaws is i Heart Huckabees.

Though, I gotta say, there were an unusually high number of kids at the theater 😕 which kind of killed the vibe with all the constant getting up, fidgeting, and shouting... I guess they realized halfway through that the movie wasn't really their speed

This movie is absolute perfection—Murray is hands down the only choice to play Zissou. Wilson is decent enough, though he’s basically just leaning into that same vibe he had in Rushmore, which isn't quite the same as what Houston brought to the table, but hey, I'll take it. The soundtrack is killer, the jokes are totally unexpected, and let's be real—it’s definitely not a film for everyone.

I gave it a perfect ten on IMDb!

I had such a blast watching it!
My only question was why on earth so many people decided to walk out mid-movie 😕
Honestly, it was so hilarious I nearly peed myself laughing twice😁

I haven't actually sat down to watch it yet, but looking at that cast on the poster, I get the distinct impression it's meant to be a comedy. 😕 Am I on the right track here?

You’re kind of right—it is technically a comedy, but more of a specific breed, if you will... a "serious" comedy. You really have to see the Tenenbaums to understand what I mean, but in any case, if you're expecting slapstick gags, constant snarky insults, or some guy spilling coffee all over his chin, you're going to be disappointed.

This thing is top-tier satire!

Don't sweat it, the movie's actually good. If you stop obsessing over "who directed this" and just watch what's on screen, it's a blast. It’s basically a giant fever dream—everything from trashy bits to satire, parody, and a ton of weird little scenes just meant to make you smirk. Zero pretension, killer soundtrack (I NEED to find that synth music ASAP), and some great animation/design thanks to Henry Selick. Totally worth a thumbs up in my book. 😁

(Though, honestly, the constant wide-angle lens thing kinda bugs me... even if it's probably his easiest excuse in this one)
