This movie was honestly one of the best things I saw last year. 👍

What really gripped me was how it managed to be socially conscious and political, yet still felt fun, grounded, and adventurous all at once. It didn't overdo any single part; it just balanced everything perfectly into one cohesive story.

By the way, the story is actually true—like someone else mentioned before, both he and his closest friend kept diaries, so the film is basically a blend of those two accounts.

Speaking of the Amazon River, I used to work for a guy who was Peruvian, and from what I remember of his stories, crossing parts of the Amazon River can be doable, especially during certain dry seasons, but it's incredibly risky.

Just a wonderful film. And when the song won an Academy Award, I was practically jumping for joy!

Oh, one more thing. The singer gave probably the best speech at the Academy Awards in the last ten years!

The film is excellent, though I must admit the book left a deeper impression on me (as is often the case). The story is, of course, true and based on their own journals. In my view, what the film failed to capture was the concept of a unified South America that Che held before his journey, which began to fracture harshly during their travels. That disillusionment, the apathy of the people, and their resignation to circumstance profoundly shaped his life's path. That final scene, where he gives his birthday speech, partially reflects that realization.

It would be way too ironic if they were the ones producing it, considering they actually killed him... then again, the Americans always have their hands (and their money) in everything.

What kind of scum are those Americans... what are they doing to poor people? The man just wanted to build a better world, and they murdered him, cut his hands off, and buried him in some secret location!!! As for the film, it is also, among other things, an American co-production.

The movie itself is basically just a gorgeous postcard of Latin America.
While Bernal does a decent job, de la Serna is absolutely stellar. My only gripe is that the portrayal of Che Guevara feels a bit too idealized. His journey toward social awareness is touching and laid out very clearly, but I'll admit I couldn't quite shake these cynical feelings once the credits rolled. You know, Castro's (and Che's) Cuba isn't exactly the utopia of social justice and equality everyone imagines. It feels like we were left completely in the dark about his darker side. This is the version of Che that people print on T-shirts and hang up as posters.
There's nothing wrong with that, I suppose, but I still walked away feeling like the film didn't offer much more than what you'd find in the travelogues of Maria Saletto. 😁

Beyond that, I think the filmmakers made a conscious choice—if you want to call it that—to focus on the unblemished, ideological side of Che Guevara's life. It was actually pretty smart, and honestly, a decent move. They avoided playing the controversy card, which could have hyped up the movie but ultimately would have ruined it. Dealing with the contradictions between Che's ideals and how Fidel Castro actually ran things in practice is a mess (and yeah, practice usually ruins everything 😁...). Instead, they made South America the main character, and I'm actually a fan of that approach...

That’s exactly what the movie is about. I wouldn't go so far as to say the character is idealized, especially considering he was still just finding his footing at that stage. However, he did make it clear that there is no such thing as a revolution without bloodshed. 😉

Word on the street is that Americans are working on a movie about Che Guevara, though it likely won't be about his motorcycle travels. 😬
