GNN> I found the movie funny, but maybe not *that* much

Personally, I didn't find the movie funny at all, and I'd bet most people feel the same way.

I mean, sure, there are some absurd scenes that might get a laugh, but probably for entirely different reasons. This isn't really a comedy to begin with.

The whole thing is more of a "cult experience"—something you watch to enjoy the music or even sing along and dance to the unknown.

Someone actually told me once—I think an unknown was there too—that RHPS is basically just a low-budget musical or something like that...🤔

yeah, that's how I saw it too, I guess

this whole thing is just twisted or... unknown... just plain weird, I suppose

it's campy, it's a joke, maybe even kind of trashy

basically anything except a standard genre flick

Melissa Moore32 said:Someone was telling me once—I think unknown was there too—about how RHPS is actually just an example of a low-budget musical or something like that....

hmmm... but RHPS *is* a low-budget musical, so your point feels like it's trying to say something else entirely, maybe?😁

quietdriver3> your sentence sounds like it started out as something else entirely

There was this whole debate going on about what RHPS actually is.

Like, was it intentionally made to be that bad? Was the whole thing just meant to be a joke, or were they actually 100% serious when they made it and it just turned out the way it did? It’s hard to say how much of it is pure trash and how much isn't...

Then someone chimed in saying that RHPS is basically just an example of a low-budget musical.

I've only ever seen the movie version, not the actual stage musical. Though, I guess I'd love to experience the musical live and see what it's like being in the audience while everyone is jumping around and dancing. 😂 👍

Those shirts are pretty cool too... what does it say again... ''Someone in Transylvania loves you'' 🤔

Then why on earth do people even watch it? If you want an example of pure trash—as in a total loser of a film that people only sit through so they can mock it—this is it. I honestly don't see any other redeeming qualities here.

As for what other people think, I might actually believe them if I hadn't heard descriptions from at least three different sources (including this thread) about live screenings where the entire audience spends the whole time making fun of the movie and laughing at it.

GNN>Why on earth do people even watch it then?

I guess it’s because it’s got a certain vibe, the music is actually solid, and you can always make fun of the movie while still admitting it isn't total garbage.
GNN>I don't see any other redeeming qualities in the film.

Well, there's the music... which is really good, I might even go that far.

Seriously, the soundtrack is one of those things you could actually listen to all day, whether you're driving, hanging out, or just browsing the unknown and playing it through Winamp. I can't say that about most other musicals, honestly.

It feels more like a musical made for the masses rather than just a tiny niche of people who worship Andrew Lloyd Webber.
GNN>I might believe that for other people, but I've heard descriptions from at least three different places (this thread being one) about theater screenings where people spend the whole time heckling the movie and making fun of it.

Sorry, but there's a huge difference between a loud theater screening and watching the movie by yourself at home.

At the end of the day, the mere fact that you can sit down and watch this movie on a random night when you have nothing better to do—without someone sitting next to you making jokes—suggests it has some level of merit... or, I don't want to overstate it 😬...it has that "something" that makes people like it.

Ultimately, the mere fact that you can easily put this movie on during a random evening when you have nothing better to do—without anyone sitting next to you to joke around with—suggests the film possesses some level of merit... or let’s not get carried away 😬...it just has that certain "something" that keeps people coming back.

I don't know, props to Tim Curry for his performance in fishnets and weights, but I still don't think the movie is all that great. I should probably burn the soundtrack to a disc again, though.

For everything else, I'll stick to Robin Williams' live shows and Kung Pow!. 😁

It’s actually pretty interesting how most of the superfans and cult followers basically admit themselves that it isn't even a "good" movie by any standard definition.

I honestly suspect they just latched onto that specific kind of chaotic energy you get when the whole theater is vibing together—where everyone shows up in corsets and fishnets just to shout "unknown". 😁

Man, cult followings are something else.
Honestly, there's really no point in even arguing about it.

I don't know, I mean, all credit to Tim Curry for his performance with the sticks and weights, but I still didn't think the movie was that great.

Well, look... at this point, we’re already deep into the territory of pure subjectivity.

Honestly, I can’t even put my finger on exactly what makes this movie work for me. There’s just something about it—an intangible vibe, I guess. Maybe someone else will see it the same way I do, or maybe it just won't be anyone else's cup of tea. It is what it is... tastes differ, I suppose. *shrugs*

At the end of the day, I can't really find any "objective" arguments to support this movie, other than the music. 😉
It’s pretty interesting, actually. Even most of the hardcore fans and cult followers basically admit that it isn't exactly a masterpiece of filmmaking.

I guess they all just latched onto that specific energy the movie releases when it hits a packed theater—where everyone’s wearing corsets and fishnets and singing "unknown do the time warp again."

Yeah, nice one, Richard Hernandez13... you hit the nail right on the head. 👍 Look, I wouldn't say this "energy" is enough to make me want to go out and join some crazy synchronized dance troupe in workout gear, but hey, if it means I get to do the Time Warp, then fine—count me in. 👍

I guess some people just get it, while others totally don't. Honestly, there's probably folks out there who find the whole thing so repulsive they wouldn't even be able to sit through the opening credits... let alone whatever comes after that. 😁

One thing is for sure. After watching RHPS, I definitely see Susan Sarandon in a whole different light. Also, I can't help but crack a smile whenever Barry Bostwick shows up in an episode of Spin City.

The only thing that’s actually changed for me regarding Tim Curry is that my opinion has shifted for the better. I mean, it wasn't exactly bad before, but things have definitely improved. 😉 Hands down... the best... supporting actor... EVER. 🙏 😁

I remember watching maybe the first half hour of this movie when I was just a kid before I ended up tossing it aside. 😁
Since then... I haven't revisited it, and if I recall correctly (though I haven't checked), you can't even find it in local video rental stores anymore.
That said, I am aware that within certain circles, this film is considered a bit of a cult classic 😁 but because of that... could someone please explain the appeal? What is the actual deal here? I'm trying to reconcile the film itself with all the hype surrounding it.

offtopik: can someone just give me a two-sentence recap of how that episode wrapped up? like, who actually ended up killing the doorman?

off t: Brad Pitt killed him! :ggls: - that fanatic

When I realized yesterday they were playing the soundtrack from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, I was dying laughing—and then finding out the whole episode revolved around it? It was honestly so good 😬

I might actually be pleasantly surprised if some American network finally airs the movie... someday

Well, enlighten me then

I mean, there are endless descriptions and websites all over the internet—not sure what else you expect people to tell you here. Besides, trying to summarize something like The Rocky Horror Picture Show is just a lost cause.
True, it’s definitely an acquired taste, but the popularity usually speaks for itself...

Honestly, just watch it and be done with it.

Personally, I think I'll have to print out a different script to follow along next time. And hey, throwing a Rocky party might actually be a fun idea.

Should I even bother looking for it? It isn't at my local Blockbuster (is it?), and I really don't feel like driving all over town just to track down this one movie.
Do you happen to have a copy?

Jose Miller3 :
I honestly can't recall who Brad was... it doesn't really matter—I'll manage just fine without knowing that specific bit of trivia.

In that episode, the fanatic—you know, the guy obsessed with the goalie's girlfriend?—is actually played by the same actor who played Brad in the original The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I suspect most people haven't even seen this cult classic from the seventies, but if anyone here actually has, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on it...

Yeah, I've seen it 🙂
The movie is legendary. It has such incredible scenes and songs...
A whole crowd of drag performers and absolute lunatics all gathered in one mansion—it's wild!
...and Tim Curry is unforgettable in those platforms and that corset 😁

But honestly, I know very few people who have actually watched it. Every time I bring it up, everyone just stares at me blankly and asks if it's that thing with the boxer?!?
It's sad
