I’m curious—what are you guys actually eating and drinking during the summer to keep from dehydrating? Especially if you're stuck working outside in heat north of 90 degrees.
I remember reading somewhere back in my college days about how British colonizers in India basically engineered an entire dietary system for themselves. It was all based on stuff packed with minerals, vitamins, and easy-to-digest carbs that the locals were already eating. The whole point was to replenish everything you lose when you're sweating buckets.
Basically, it meant tons of fluids—teas, broths, whatever—plus things like bananas and apricots because they're loaded with minerals and vitamins. They also supposedly leaned into really heavy, spicy food with lots of seasonings (supposedly to kill off bacteria). Fast forward to today, and even modern doctors are constantly preaching about mineral-rich diets or those fancy electrolyte drinks athletes use just to replace what gets sweated out during intense activity.
Do you guys have your own little survival systems or specific ways of eating just to get through the summer without passing out the second you step onto the sidewalk?
😁

I don't really take anything, honestly. I might drink more of them, but then I’m constantly running to the bathroom 😁. Maybe it's just because I'm always freezing—it takes like 90 degrees before I actually feel normal 😎

Is lemonade actually the holy grail here? Or am I better off just smashing some chilled watermelon? Or maybe a hot tea? Seriously, what’s your go-to when you're dying from the heat?

When it gets crazy hot out, I usually lose my appetite entirely.
But man, I can't say no to fruit—there's always plenty available!
Like, I'll polish off half a pound of strawberries for one meal, then go for half a pound of blueberries for the next...
I just kind of listen to what my body's craving and roll with it. Carbs aren't really my thing—not normally, and definitely not right now—so I usually stick to meat and cheese tossed into some salads...
Just chop up some cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, and the rest of the crew in a bowl, throw in some spices, olive oil, and maybe some feta cubes... that's basically the perfect summer meal for me.
Or just a drinkable yogurt, which is super refreshing.
I'm drinking massive amounts of water, too...
Though... since I work in an air-conditioned office, it isn't too much of a struggle to deal with. It’s just a bit of a pain constantly stepping in and out of the AC—the temperature shocks are a real killer. 😲

Honestly, tea isn't even the best move since it acts as a diuretic—basically just flushing all your fluids out.

Seriously, when it's scorching hot outside, everyone starts acting like you shouldn't touch anything warm. Total nonsense! You actually want some hot tea. It helps regulate your body temperature—basically tells your internal thermostat to chill out and match the heat outside.😁

During the summer, I increase my water intake and eat more seasonal fruits and vegetables that are
abundant in the summer and high in water content, such as cherries, cantaloupe, watermelon,
peaches, apricots, spinach, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant, etc.
From noon to 5 p.m., I avoid direct sunlight whenever possible. Fortunately, my office is comfortable—air-conditioned and cool—and on weekends,
I stay in the shade during those critical hours, whether it's in a pine grove near the beach, in the water, or taking a nap on a shaded balcony after lunch.
The heat doesn't affect my appetite 😁, but for weekday lunches, I enjoy
having things like a Caprese salad with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil,
or grated cucumbers with yogurt and sour cream, among other things.

Walter Myers4 said:When the heat is really cranking, people actually suggest drinking hot tea—apparently, it helps regulate your body temperature by helping your internal systems adjust to the external environment.😁

I definitely see the logic there, though I have to admit—getting myself to actually chug a steaming cup of tea when it's sweltering outside feels like quite the hurdle.
If you really stop to think about it, isn't it true that the sweat only starts pouring off you right after you've downed a glass of ice-cold water? It’s such a strange way for the body to react, isn't it?

Honestly, there’s zero difference whether it’s summer or winter. I just head over to Trader Joe's and grab whatever happens to be on the shelves. If they aren't stocking sauerkraut or anything for making stuffed cabbage rolls, then fine... if they have zucchini, I buy zucchini. It’s not exactly rocket science. I haven't skipped a single lasagna dinner just because the weather got warm.
Besides, a cold beer goes down much smoother anyway.😁

Nothing beats a cold beer under a massive shade tree... *burp* 😬 I picked up an entire selection of German imports... barley beers... dark malts... classic Lagers... even some organic brews... enough to have one bottle every single night... ahhh...

As for food: Gazpacho 👍 chilled tomato soup, add some Tabasco if you feel like it... *slurp*

Usually, after working out, I'll down a liter of an isotonic drink, mostly just because I like the taste. It reminds me of Gatorade—kind of synthetic 🙂

If you're feeling parched, seriously, try some ice-cold whey👍

I'm doing the same thing, drinking Iso-Sport at work, maybe a liter or two. 👍 😁

My appetite's just... off. Like, I’m hungry, but the thought of grabbing a burger or anything heavy? No thanks. Just sticking to fruit, yogurt, salads, and stuff like that. Not even craving sweets lately.

I honestly thought this thread was about what people over 30 should be eating, you know? But then I look at this stuff and—holy crap—it’s like we’ve reached the point where if I don't switch my entire diet to this nonsense right now, I won't even make it through the summer. 😲 🤣

Man, today was an absolute furnace. How the hell did you guys survive the heat? What were you eating and drinking just to stay upright?👍 Me? I’ve been slamming Gatorade to try and get my electrolytes back up, plus bananas. And honestly, I couldn't resist some apple strudel. I tried to sit down to a big eggplant casserole for lunch, but ugh, I just couldn't even look at it in this weather.😁

Breakfast was just a whole wheat snack bar
Lunch was two apricots

😎

Oh, and I totally blanked on my snack—some spicy chicken breast, half a loaf of bread with a burger and mayo, and a little bit of Coca-Cola😳 😁

Seriously, you aren't sweating through your clothes from all that mayo? It's hitting 108 degrees here today. I am legitimately asking how anyone survives this. I heard chewing on sesame seeds helps... but has anyone else noticed how everyone is losing their minds because of this heat?😁

How on earth are you sweating from mayo straight out of the fridge? 😕

Just kidding, Walter Myers4 😁 😘 I'm bored as hell 😢

Well, it's definitely not boring for me. I've never had this much work piled on my desk. I seriously needed a vacation.
