That sounds like a classic case of Magnesium deficiency—especially when you're dealing with those sudden calf cramps in the middle of the night.
It might not be the absolute rule, but in most instances, I’d say it's a textbook symptom.

I've been dealing with this for quite a while now—basically, whenever I'm sitting down and try to lift my leg, I get hit with this intense, painful cramp... it's honestly pretty rough, and afterward, I can barely even stand up properly. Does anyone know if there's a way to fix this? Maybe some specific exercises could help... or something else!?

For a few months now, I’ve been dealing with this intense foot cramp about once a week. It used to happen occasionally, but the frequency has definitely ramped up lately. I've noticed there's a pattern: it always seems to strike right when I'm stretching out in bed at night, and I usually end up grabbing the edge of the mattress just to try and stretch my toes out, haha. 😁 The pain is honestly pretty brutal, and I can feel my foot tightening up, almost like there's a little knot or a "bump" right where the cramp hits—I assume that's just the muscle seizing up. Trying to stretch it out or stand up like you're supposed to do during a typical cramp doesn't help at all; if anything, it actually makes the sensation much worse.
Could this be related to my shoes? For the last couple of years, I've been wearing Vans because they're reliable and keep my feet dry even when it's raining or snowing out. That said, this specific pair of Vans I just picked up is incredibly uncomfortable; my feet feel absolutely trashed by the time I finish a walk downtown or run errands.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? Are there specific massages or techniques that actually work, since I know it isn't just about the footwear—it's happened before too. Or should I just head to a doctor and see if a nurse can give my legs a proper massage? 🙂 😛 :no lifer:

It could definitely be the footwear, or maybe just too much walking mixed with sitting too much. Try switching up your shoes, drink more water, and start taking some Magnesium.

I’ve mentioned this in another thread already, but if you're dealing with foot pain and calf cramps, get some Ao2 medical compression socks. I do professional horse racing, and this sport absolutely trashes your legs and calves—cramps and pain are basically part of the job. Ever since I started wearing these, they've completely vanished.

I was skeptical at first, but man, they actually work. I used to have to order them from the States, but now you can find them right here.
Plus, my feet don't feel freezing anymore, so my circulation is finally back on track. Even my doctor wears them, and she can't believe how much of a difference they make.

Hi, I'm asking for someone who started losing feeling in their right leg from the back about a year ago. They were diagnosed with peroneal nerve palsy or something similar. I don't have any medical paperwork handy, so I'm just looking for some general advice.

Walking became harder and harder, and they were bounced from doctor to doctor without anyone finding an answer.
Then, they used some kind of probes in the leg to measure muscle impulse strength during contraction, and the results were apparently terrible.
They tried physical therapy, acupuncture, and seeing specialists. An MRI was done, and they were seen at a clinic in Washington, D.C., called Sunce, if I recall correctly. They were told surgery wasn't necessary and to just stick to exercises. But things kept getting worse every single day despite following the routine strictly. Eventually, they were referred to a clinic in San Francisco, where they underwent a disc nucleoplasty.

A few days after that, it seemed like things were improving because the pain actually went away.
But now, extremely intense and painful cramps have started in the other, healthy leg...

The muscle on the affected leg has atrophied significantly, yet they were told that even after the nucleoplasty, the condition probably won't change.
Does anyone have any advice on what to do next? It clearly feels like everything is just spiraling downhill.
And now we're all terrified that the other leg will start losing sensation too.

In the injured leg, the first symptoms were identical to these massive cramps...
They took the calcium, Magnesium, and other supplements prescribed by the doctors, and they are still taking them, so it doesn't seem like a mineral deficiency.

Does anyone have a real fix for foot pain? Specifically my left sole. In my experience, a professional foot massage costs an arm and a leg, and honestly, what does it actually achieve? Just temporary relaxation.

Lisa Ortiz17 said:swiftbison7, I’m dealing with the same issue—though it doesn't hit me quite as often. I get these sudden, violent cramps while I'm sleeping—it only lasts a few minutes, but in that time, I'm jumping around like a maniac and crying... the pain is just unbearable. Even after the cramp subsides, that area stays sore for another two or three days. It used to happen much more frequently, especially when I was swimming.
My blood work came back fine, and I make sure to eat bananas every single day.

Same here! I tried taking Magnesium and calcium, drinking tons of water, and then I found those Celliant socks. Seriously, life changer!!! Felt better after the very first night. My circulation is basically non-existent (my feet are always freezing), and this actually fixed it!!! Get the AO2 socks from Celliant. Go look them up! They totally worked for me

Try warm compresses or some medication. Regardless, you should probably see a doctor. A massage might help relax things, which is usually what you need with cramps, though massaging the foot itself isn't always the answer for the actual pain. A few months back, I went to a reflexology clinic in Washington, D.C.—can't recall the exact name—for foot reflexology. It wasn't pricey, and the therapist did a great job. Maybe try something similar? It certainly won't hurt.

Hi, I have a quick question...

About a week ago, I hit the gym for the first time after... well, nearly a year off.
Since I broke my ankle two years back, I’ve become a lot more cautious about warming up. I wouldn't say I'm obsessed, but I definitely make an effort to get loose before I play—I play volleyball.

Last Sunday, we did our usual warmup and stretching, then transitioned into some soccer drills. Naturally, after just five minutes, I was completely winded, but that part felt fine.

Of course, I ended up with some muscle soreness—felt it most in my right thigh immediately that same day. Since I had a pretty long drive home afterward, that area kept cramping up on me. I figured it was just because it was my first session back and I'm trying to work my way back into shape...

That general muscle tenderness mostly cleared up by Thursday.

Then Friday rolled around and I went back to practice. We started with some light jogging, mixed with zigzag runs, hops, and stuff like that. After maybe 10 or 15 minutes, we moved into sprints from one end of the gym to the other. The first round felt great—I finished the sprint, walked back, turned around for the next one, and suddenly felt this sharp, intense sensation cut right through my thigh. I stopped sprinting and managed to finish (most of) the workout, but I couldn't make any sudden movements the whole time. It felt like that spot was either cramping or stinging whenever I tried to move even slightly faster than normal. It doesn't hurt while I'm just standing there—honestly, today feels almost perfect—but this morning, out of nowhere, I woke up with a cramp in that same spot.

I really don't want to take a break from training, but I'm just not sure what happened or how I should handle this...
I don't think it's a pulled muscle, though, because I imagine that would hurt longer and wouldn't feel so much like a localized cramp...

If anyone has dealt with something similar or knows what might be going on, please let me know... I'd really appreciate it.
