Sure, this could just be a carbon copy of those "Best Movies of All Time" lists you see everywhere, but honestly, it doesn't have to be. Who knows? Maybe some big-shot network executive stops by here—which wouldn't even be that crazy—and picks up a few ideas for their next programming slate.

Man, I am dying to do a deep dive and rewatch Stalker and Solaris by Tarkovsky. I'm also craving Lester's Help!, that whole François Truffaut cycle, Afternoon Love, and maybe even some of that Eric Rohmer charm like Clairin. Oh, and throw in some Ingmar Bergman classics like Woman Waiting...

I really wish I didn't have to go out and buy 😁
Rollerball. 😢Night of the Hunter and Paths of Glory are both on my list—I've somehow managed to miss them both until now...
Mutiny on the Bounty (that old one with Laurence Olivier)
... and Ran (haven't seen that one either)
. Then there's the whole run of Chaplin's films, which I just can't seem to get through...
Star Wars: Episodes IV through VI
.
Well, there's plenty more where that came from... 😁

I’ll start with Chaplin's "The Great Dictator," followed by "The Count of Monte Cristo"—that vintage version. Let's see what else is there... "Marathon Man"... then I need to find a decent Jean-Paul Belmondo film; I remember devouring those as a kid. After that, maybe "Pojtonovac"... definitely "Dr. Strangelove"... and they should really air a solid Western during prime time every week. I might think of more. Oh, I just remembered... I also recall watching some old series as a child about an American gendarme—not the Cocteau kind—just some older, balding guy driving around in a beat-up sedan and getting into all sorts of nonsense. It was a comedy, if anyone actually remembers it. Anyway, I'll try to dig up a few more titles next time.

Greetings...

That guy from the gendarme movie is the same one who played the conductor in Great Adventure, running away from the Germans with some unlucky guy while trying to help the British (that scene in the Turkish bath where they’re humming "Tea for Two and Two for Tea" is legendary)...
I'm also itching to catch Girls Want Fun and Gunise...

Yeah, yeah... I think that's the one. I can't recall his name, though—his best films would be a better way to identify him. If only I had access to a decent database to track down his filmography...

Louis de Funès (pronounced De Funès—that’s how I heard the locals say it). Spot on. He’s a personal favorite of mine, and honestly, the Oscars are to blame for everything (they always ruin things for us back home). I’d definitely record that one onto a gold cassette.

Listen, Michelle Howard2... thanks. I actually just logged on to let you know I managed to track it down on AllMovie. That little hint from Jack Harris3 about him being in the Great Adventure gave me just enough to work with. And sure enough, there it is... Louis de Funès. 🙂 🙂 🙂 Michelle Howard2, thanks again. I certainly won't complain about having too many links to choose from. 🙂 🙂

Best,

I think this might hit the airwaves later this week... 😉

So, comparing the original Solaris to Insomnia. Tough call.

I’m feeling a bit... honestly, I could really use some old James Cagney today.😁

Whenever I’ve got something specific on my mind to watch... I don't just sit around waiting for it to pop up on TV. I'll just head straight down to the local Video Club to grab it...

Clearly, you haven't spent much time in American video rental stores lately.

Personally, Belmondo was never really my thing, but Leon is easily one of my all-time favorites. No matter how many times I watch it, those same beats get me every single time. 😁
Anyone else familiar with it?

Does anyone recognize it?

Of course it's recognizable. Personally, I think Jean-Paul Belmondo is fantastic, though I suspect my affinity for his work stems from a certain sense of nostalgia—it takes me back to being a kid, seeing those films as a defining part of my upbringing.

Cheers.

The Leon trilogy is absolute perfection. Even after watching it a few times, it still holds up.

Man, what a wild ride that movie was—it’s basically a total rock anthem on screen. I've already caught it on TV a few times, but honestly? I could probably sit through it all over again right now.

I’d much rather have more Asian content handled by pro translators working directly from the source languages 😁 instead of some messy translation of German subtitles based on the original Korean

Life Imitating Art
Buffalo Soldiers
Mystic River
Buffalo Soldiers (mostly because I only caught about twenty minutes before the VHS tape got stuck in a banana peel 😠 )
Mad Max
and who could even remember those anyway... 🙂

...Murna, then Fassbinder, Godard, Truffaut, Bergman... movies you just can't find anywhere else. Honestly, I think the rest of the American public should be watching them too—on a decent schedule, mind you, not just some random Sunday morning at 10:00 AM
...I feel like NBC could actually learn a thing or two from the networks over in Europe, where they actually bother showing both the classics and modern art-house cinema on their channels. It seems like NBC has decided to take a completely different approach to what television actually is—or should be—and they build their programming accordingly (for instance, why doesn't NBC1 have not even one show dedicated strictly to books, featuring literary discussions and things of that nature?)...and I'm not even counting FOX or CNN
...since Nova managed to completely mess up their NFL broadcasts, how could we possibly expect anything "cultured" from them?
