It’s not bad. It’s a long one—clocking in at about 167 minutes—and while some of the actors are absolute powerhouses like Day-Lewis, I thought DiCaprio’s performance was pretty rough😢

The plot holds up well enough, even if Day-Lewis felt off to me. The rest of the cast did a great job, making it a solid watch despite a few hiccups

What did you guys think? Has anyone actually sat through this one yet?

This is easily Scorsese's worst work since Goodfellas. He usually doesn't waste screen time on filler roles, but this time he threw in Diaz's character just to give Leo someone to hook up with. So instead, I spent two and a half hours stuck watching the Cameron Diaz-Leo gnome bickering, Day-Lewis's overacting and constant whining, a totally forced romance, and some obnoxious Irish characters harassing decent people with their nonsense about potato blights and whatnot. It’s a shame because the most interesting parts—like the Draft Riots—only get about twenty minutes of actual attention. Honestly, that original idea for a five-hour epic probably would have made more sense, if anyone actually had the patience to sit through it.

Basically, you get a brilliant intro and a solid final twenty minutes, but that's it. For a genius like Scorsese, the rest feels empty and thin. That forced, unnecessary love story completely tanked the movie, yet Scorsese (or maybe the producers at Miramax) gave it way too much runtime. Such a waste, because this could have been a masterpiece.👎

D. Lewis is a top-tier actor, and he proves it brilliantly here; the opening act is engaging, and that initial struggle is executed perfectly. Scorsese is a master director, which becomes evident when you analyze his scenes individually. The first half of the film is genuinely compelling. That covers the positives.

DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz were incredibly poor choices for these roles; neither seems to fit the characters at all. However, the film's fatal flaw is how it completely loses its way in the second half. The final sequence is an absolute mess—just endless fighting, groups attacking people, gunfights tearing through the streets... it’s just stupidity piled upon stupidity. Eventually, the viewer simply gets lost in the chaos and stops paying attention altogether. Yuck.

I honestly don't have the slightest desire to sit through yet another movie centered around some killer, endless brawls, and all that gritty nonsense...🙄

The movie’s kind of a drag. Especially the first half.
I definitely expected more from this one.
Way too much talking, not enough doing.
There’s basically zero plot until the very end, and even then, it’s just your typical Hollywood showdown.
The characters feel pretty shallow, too. Aside from some cool costumes and masks, there isn't much depth there.
It takes some light jabs at American history and the whole political system, too.
Honestly? It feels pretty watered down and lacks any real substance.
It pokes fun at the Church as well.
