So, I had this absolute nightmare earlier where I slammed my finger right in a car door, and honestly, the pain was just unreal...
My finger was bleeding everywhere, the little bit of skin under the nail actually ripped away, and now there’s this dark bruise forming on the bottom left corner of my nail. I'm pretty sure it's just some blood trapped underneath between the nail bed and the finger itself.
What should I even do at this point? It still hurts like crazy, even though quite a few hours have passed since it happened...
Do you think my nail is going to fall off? Should I go see a doctor about this, or will it just sort itself out on its own?
As soon as I finally made it home, I ran it under some cold water, then applied an ice pack, popped two Advil, and wrapped it up with a Band-Aid.
Is that enough to handle it?
When do you think the throbbing is going to stop...
And how can I tell if the nail is actually destined to fall off or not?
I am really, really hoping it stays put...
Waaaah! 😢 😢 😢

It hurts like hell. 😢 😢 😢

Smart move getting ice on it. Maybe try some antibiotic ointment or even hydrogen peroxide first, then follow up with iodine?

But honestly, you should probably just head to the doctor. It looks like you might lose the nail.

The pain would probably subside much faster if a doctor just drained that hematoma.

As for your nail, it likely won't fall off anytime soon—not until there's enough new growth underneath.

If there isn't an open wound, you don't need to be messing around with antibiotics.

How can you say there isn't a wound? A chunk of skin peeled right off under her nail, plus there's a bruise forming at the base...

But seriously, everyone’s got this idealized version of how it should look in their heads. Go have a professional actually take a look at it...

Oh my goodness, I feel like I'm actually going to lose my mind...
How fast do I really need to get to the doctor???
Do I need to rush in today, or can I wait a few days until I wrap things up at work?
Is it a total certainty that the nail is just going to fall off?
I mean, how am I supposed to navigate the world without a nail...
And how quickly does a new one actually grow back?
How do you even deal with a hematoma opening up?
Ughhhhhhh!

Hey, wouldn't it be a little awkward for my doctor if I showed up with something as trivial as a fingernail issue?
I mean, honestly... he probably has much more pressing matters to deal with, like saving lives and everything else...
I just really don't want my nail falling off or turning blue, that's all...

Go see a doctor immediately!
I tried to be a total hero and play it cool because I figured nobody would care about a little hangnail, but four days later, I ended up in surgery right in the middle of a holiday weekend.
I didn't actually damage my skin or anything, but the nail was already turning half blue.

Happened to me too—got my finger slammed in a car door. Man, it hurt like crazy. Half my nail turned blue instantly.
I used some cold compresses and the pain eventually died down.
Basically, once the nail gets crushed like that, the blood flow just stops—it's like the nail "dies"—and it’s definitely going to fall off, but only after a new one starts growing in. A fresh nail slowly pushes out from underneath while the old one separates and finally drops off. That blue color? It's actually just clotted blood under the nail, and if you look closely at the old nail, Steven Ruiz, you can clearly see where the blood dried up.
You don't even need antibiotics since there's no infection; you really just need something for the pain.
People over here tend to overprescribe antibiotics way too much, both as a precaution and when they're actually sick, whereas in other countries, you usually only get them if it's a serious 5 to 12 out of 10 situation.
It's honestly a waste to take them unnecessarily because your body builds up resistance, which means we end up needing stronger stuff later on.

Also, Steven Ruiz, just a heads up—even when it turns black, it looks pretty gnarly until it actually falls off, so I kept a Band-Aid on it the whole time.🙂

I went through the exact same thing when I was a kid—had a heavy table fall right on my finger (don't even ask how...). The tip of my finger was totally crushed, the bone was fractured, and the nail looked just like what you described.
At the doctor's office, they actually had to surgically remove the nail—apparently, it’s necessary because of the infection risk—and since the bone was cracked, I had to wear a splint. But honestly? The absolute worst part of this whole ordeal was the dressing changes. Every two days, I had to deal with changing the bandages on that raw, open wound where the nail used to be, and man, it hurt like hell. That went on for maybe a week or two until the wound finally closed up. It looked pretty gnarly for a bit, but after about a month, a new nail started growing back from the root. My finger looks a little crooked now because of the crush injury, but the nail itself... well, more or less looks normal.
Anyway, just go see a doctor. They might not have to rip the nail out, but if they say it needs to happen, just suck it up. You don't have much of a choice. Whatever, shit happens.

I literally saved my nail with some Heparin gel.
Check if your local CVS or Walgreens even carries it.
I smacked right into a glass door—total klutz move—and some lady there told me to try this gel. I honestly thought I was gonna have to rip the nail off, but I just kept applying it and it actually worked.
Seriously, highly recommend it for everyone; it’s great for veins, broken capillaries, bruises, and all that stuff too.

Hey everyone!
So, I just got back from my doctor's appointment.
I honestly feel like I just stepped off a battlefield because he wrapped my finger in the thickest bandage I have ever seen in my life... He told me I was really smart to come in now, otherwise there was a huge risk of an infection setting in. He actually had to use a little tool to pierce through the nail area to drain out the hematoma or something like that... I don't know the technical details, but I was honestly so spooked that I had to look away while he worked...
After that, he applied some antiseptic, went through about a thousand layers of gauze, and finished it all off with a Band-Aid. He suggested I take some Advil to help with the throbbing and gave me plenty of supplies like antiseptic and bandages so I can handle the daily re-wrapping myself at home.
The best part was when he mentioned that it doesn't actually look like the nail is going to fall off, and that the pain should start tapering off in just a few days.
Hopefully, God willing, everything goes exactly according to plan... 🙂

I'm sure you're feeling some relief now 🙂

Once that hematoma is drained, the pain should start tapering off pretty quickly.

As for the nail, it won't drop off until the new one starts coming in.🙂

Of course I’m feeling a bit more relaxed now, though the pain hasn't quite let up yet... 😠 😢
Anyway, I wanted to ask—what exactly do people mean when they say "the nail won't fall off until the new one grows in"???
Does that just mean this bruising will slowly grow out toward the tip, or am I actually going to end up with half a nail while the new one starts coming in from underneath...

Steven Ruiz, my new nail is super thin—it’s basically growing underneath the old one. Once it gets about two-thirds of the way up, the old part starts peeling off at the sides, though it's already detached at the bottom... it just eventually falls off. It doesn't even hurt, it just looks gross. I've been wearing a 🙂 Band-Aid
just to hide it.

When you notice a new nail starting to grow underneath, you can just gently pull the old one off. That’s what I did once—it stings a little bit, but honestly, the pain passes pretty quickly.

Steven Ruiz said:
Does this mean the blue discoloration will just grow out naturally, or is the nail actually going to detach once the new one starts coming in—leaving me with half a nail and half nothing?

That’s exactly how mine looked. I ended up using a Band-Aid 😉

Ugh, Steven Ruiz, I am so sorry you’re going through this. My little guy actually caught his nail in something a few days ago too, and it was honestly pretty gruesome. He was messing around with this metal lever on one of those coin-operated kiddie rides—you know, the ones where you drop a quarter in and the whole thing swings back and forth? We popped a coin in, and since nobody could see what he was doing on the other side of the machine, we didn't realize anything was wrong until we heard him scream. As soon as that lever moved, it caught his finger.
Baaa, that sounds awful. It sounds like half the nail was ripped off... thank God it wasn't the actual finger!
We headed straight to the doctor right after. His finger started swelling up and the area under the nail turned a bit bruised, but the doctor said that’s actually a good sign—it means the nail isn't going to fall off!

Oh, poor little guy. I bet he’s feeling even worse than I did when I was small...
I honestly can't remember crying quite that much from the pain, it was just unreal. It hurts so badly that even moving your finger through the air feels intense, and I really had no idea it would be THIS painful...
It feels like the pain is finally starting to subside a bit now, though I am taking some Advil, so maybe that's helping things along...
Anyway, I'm just crossing my fingers for a super speedy recovery for both of us—your son and me!
Thanks so much to everyone for all the great advice...
If you hadn't encouraged me to go see the doctor, I probably would have kept trying to play the hero, and then this thing might have gotten infected and ruined my finger, my whole vacation, and everything else too...

It hurts.

Sweet childhood memories.
My grandma used to just carry a potato around behind us because someone was always slamming a door on someone else's fingers.

The three of us (my cousin, my brother, and I) absolutely loved 🙄 slamming doors right in each other's faces; honestly, we’d have been lucky if we hadn't ended up with a crushed finger 😁

I don't know what it is about potatoes, but I would have wrapped my finger in those thin slices every hour if it meant saving my skin.
But yeah, it hurts—it really hurts.😉

So, my new sneakers absolutely wrecked my toenails over the summer.

The fit was just weird, though honestly, it didn't even hurt that much at first since I wasn't wearing any cushions or anything.

But then, before I knew it, my nails started turning blue... 😲

And they actually started lifting off. Luckily, the weather finally cooled down, so I didn't have to walk around in sandals showing them off.

The left one fell off completely, and there was already about a third of a new nail growing underneath. That part actually scares me a little because the growth looks kind of funky, but I'm just hoping everything turns out okay.

As for the right one, it just kept growing forward (like, a new nail wasn't growing under the old one, it just continued normally), so I just trimmed off the damaged part.

They've pretty much grown back by now, but I really don't want this to turn into some huge complication, so I'm heading straight to the doctor immediately.

And those sneakers? They're going straight into the trash. 😠
