Bridge of Spies (2015) - Steven Spielberg

Ever since Munich, nothing he does seems to hit the mark for me. This one was just as lackluster and frankly a bit of a snooze. I really don't understand why we keep settling for a mediocre Tom Hanks? To make matters worse, even John Williams isn't providing the kind of score that used to actually elevate his films!

I really enjoyed 👍—watching Tom Hanks is always such a treat for me. I was worried it might be too dense to follow, but it wasn't complicated at all; honestly, it was just genuinely engaging.

It was a total dud, honestly... just one of those movies. I don't think I'll ever feel the need to watch it a second time.

Finally, a decent Spielberg flick after Munich. Though, honestly, Munich was better in my book...

But hey, whatever, at least he's getting back to his roots instead of leaning into those overly sappy themes he's been doing lately...

Really great stuff. There isn't a single dull moment in the whole thing, and I guess I just find myself liking Tom Hanks more with every single movie he does. Definitely worth a watch!

I brewed this up this morning as a little Saturday morning treat, and now I just feel let down.😠.

Seriously, how does someone manage to make a movie this boring? Especially with this subject matter, a script by the Coens, and two actors like Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance who absolutely killed it? They managed to squeeze in every single cliché found in American cinema since the 50s. It’s just cheap, pathetic, patriotic, anti-Soviet propaganda that would make movies from the early Reagan era blush. On top of all that, it's dragged out, dull, and predictable. I honestly wonder if Spielberg was even on set during filming, or if they just handed him the footage and let some hack edit it together.

It’s basically a second "The Terminal"—no direction whatsoever, just an endless state of confusion.

Total flop and the biggest disappointment of 2015. 👎

I liked it. I guess the pacing was decent enough, and the story, acting, and directing were all solid. It isn't necessarily the best work from Hanks or Spielberg, but it’s definitely worth a watch.

Hanks is sitting on the train. A woman spots him and flashes a smile. Hanks looks out the window with a grin, spotting some kids jumping over a backyard fence. He’s just happy to finally be back home.

The script was decent enough, but the whole vibe and execution were clearly handled by fucking Steven or some fourth-rate assistant he let take the reins....

I might be in the minority here, if not completely alone, but I just couldn't get on board with Mark Rylance's performance. That cold, detached indifference he brought to the role felt so forced and artificial that it was actually painful to watch.

That said, the movie itself is decent enough popcorn fare.

Finally, a solid Spielberg film.

T'Pau - Bridge of Spies

Just watched this for the first time today. Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance are both fantastic in their roles, and the direction holds up well too. It’s definitely a slower burn, but I never found myself bored. Comparing it to other Spielberg films, it’s solid, but probably not something I’ll feel the need to revisit.

I’m with you—really solid movie.
I just can’t figure out if that Pryr character—you know, that young exchange student they featured—was actually a real person or if the writers just cooked him up for the plot.

It was a solid film. It definitely had enough breathing room to spiral into melodrama, but in my opinion, it stayed tasteful and restrained. I’d give it a strong seven out of ten.
Great acting, and the pacing kept things moving...
