Love (2015)

So, look, Noah's film definitely leans into that experimental vibe, which means there’s some genuinely cool stuff happening... but let's be real, there are parts that just don't quite land or feel "justified." I think I covered more of this earlier, but honestly? I wouldn't go as far as saying it's just smut masquerading as high art either. It's debatable! We really need to dig into where we draw the line on what counts as "artistic" when you consider all the stuff being shown on screen. You've gotta find that middle ground before jumping to conclusions...

While von Trier managed to weave those elements into a perfect concept, with Noet, it feels like he still hasn't quite figured out how to pull it all together.

I didn't have particularly high expectations for this one, so I can't say I’m feeling disappointed. Once I heard that Noah was filming something featuring such explicit, uninhibited sexual content, I pretty much knew exactly where this was headed. I tried to keep an open mind, hoping for a pleasant surprise, but that simply never materialized. Sure, the cinematography is gorgeous—the framing is elegant, the colors pop, and the camera work is solid—which is precisely what I find most compelling about Love. But everything else? It just falls short, especially when you start looking at the dialogue, the underlying themes, the script, and those other fundamental pillars of filmmaking. I have a real distaste for directors who take a downward trajectory by essentially recycling their previous works, only to produce something that feels like a diluted, weaker version of their earlier material. A handful of well-executed shots and a desperate urge to experiment aren't enough to save a movie in my eyes; ultimately, I can only categorize this as mediocre at best.

Caught a movie in 3D yesterday. I have to say, it was excellent, especially the 3D effects... 👍👍

Just like his previous work, Noah has delivered an audiovisual feast worth remembering. “Love” features a stellar soundtrack, blending Bach’s instrumentals with John Carpenter’s synth vibes (“Assault on Precinct 13”) alongside the rock experiments of Pink Floyd and John Frusciante. His longtime DP, Benoit Debie (“Spring Breakers”), utilizes long takes and slow cuts that create a psychedelic, flickering effect... the camera hovers over the characters during sex, capturing them from various angles. Speaking of sex, he can be tender with soft whispers against a pillow, yet intensely erotic at times. The threesome scene involving Murphy, electro, and om is particularly erotic.

The soundtrack is definitely great, though I guess his previous hits weren't half bad either.
