Hey, I’ve got a weird one for you. I'm paying for a 10 Mbps plan, but my Speedtest results are hovering around 2-3 Mbps. It’s driving me nuts because when I’m downloading a file, the speed seems fine, but the second I try to browse or watch anything on Vimeo, everything crawls. I have to manually drop the quality to 360p, and even then, I’m constantly hitting pause just to let the damn thing buffer.
Anyone have any clue what might be causing this?

Is that last Flash player still installed? Maybe try running CCleaner to clear out all that junk, and then run a scan with Norton just to make sure there isn't any malware lurking around. Could some background processes be hogging your bandwidth while you're watching stuff on Vimeo—like a torrent client or maybe a macOS update downloading in the background?

Give customer service a call and have them reset your connection. I had to deal with the exact same thing once..

I’ve shut down everything running in the background, but it doesn't matter. They reset things a couple of times, and I even had a technician from Comcast out here the day before yesterday to swap out the router, but it's the exact same story. He was actually baffled that the Speedtest results were coming back identical.
He even brought his own laptop over to run some tests, and honestly, it was the same shit all over again.
I should point out that this all started right after we signed up for Hulu, even though I can download files at full speed and stream Hulu without any buffering.

Maybe try unplugging the Hulu box from the wall and running a Speedtest, or just head over to Vimeo and try playing back a video in 1080p or 720p—see if it starts lagging then... If it doesn't, then the issue is likely the Hulu hardware itself, so you might want to tell them to swap it out for a new one...

I tried everything, ran the tests, and it’s still garbage. My speed is sitting at a pathetic 2.05 Mbps. How do they expect to replace Hulu by just swapping out the hardware?

Yeah, that’s exactly what I was getting at...

To be honest, I have my doubts about whether that 10MBps speed they’re handing you is actually what you should be getting now that they've rolled out Hulu.

It feels to me like adding the TV service to the mix might be causing a significant dip in your bandwidth, perhaps even more than you realize.

If I were in your shoes, I’d keep calling in technical support tickets until they finally get it sorted out; just make sure you don't bring up the TV service at all—keep the conversation strictly focused on your connection speeds.

Keep pushing them until they migrate your line over to VDSL2, because once that happens, those performance issues should vanish into thin air.
Leaving a bit of a heated comment on the provider's Facebook page can sometimes act like a catalyst to get things moving faster.

p.s.

Are you absolutely certain your computer hasn't been compromised by some malware?

A technician came by and told his supervisors to bump my connection up to 10Mbps for internet and 5Mbps for Hulu, but the Speedtest results are still garbage. Let me be clear: my torrent speeds are fine—hitting that same 1.2MB per second I had before, regardless of whether Hulu is working or not. BUT browsing is terrible, and Vimeo is basically unusable.
I’ve been browsing around and noticed others are running into similar issues, though I don't quite get why. http://www.hacksparrow.com/web-speed...d-is-fast.html

I’m having similar issues with Vimeo here. It keeps forcing my resolution down to 120p.

If it were just Vimeo acting up, I’d at least know where the problem lies. Right now, everything feels broken. I'm trying to run an update for McAfee—it's only 35MB—but it's going to take 25 to 30 minutes to finish. It should take less than a minute. Something is seriously messed up. 🙂

If that's the case, I suspect the bottleneck might actually be internal, perhaps originating from within your own PC.
By the way, what kind of ping numbers are you seeing?

If the issue is actually on my end, how am I supposed to fix it? This wasn't even happening until I started using Hulu.

I ran two different tests—one through the provider's site and one via Speedtest.

Everything's running smoothly now. I updated my Norton, ran a full system scan, and my speeds are back up to ten.
Maybe I just got unlucky with that Hulu setup and picked up some malware along the way, who knows. All that matters is that everything's working again.
Thanks, everyone! 🙂

Hey everyone, let's say I have a massive amount of data—we're talking serious gigabytes here—that I want to stash in the cloud just to keep it "safe." The problem is, my upload speed is basically zero. It’s moving at a snail's pace. In short, we're looking at a mission that feels nearly impossible, especially since cloud service uploads always seem to hit some kind of snag or bottleneck right when you need them most. What can I actually do to make this even remotely feasible?

You might want to head over to a friend's place who has fiber internet... or honestly, just kick off a massive upload right before you head out on a ski trip and let it run while you're gone.
