The guy in the Audi is responsible for these deaths, but mind you, this one blew right through a red light, while the fellow in the Audi actually had the green light. :/ It’s just an absolute tragedy, plain and simple. 😢
A buddy of mine who lives out in rural Illinois was just telling me about this; he says people drive like complete maniacs at that exact intersection all the time, and honestly, some of them are so arrogant they’ll even drift into oncoming traffic—just as they're coming down the bridge—and the highway patrol doesn't seem to do a damn thing about it. If these people hadn't been killed, I’d say the police should have stripped that driver of his license on the spot and issued a lifetime ban. The guy just barrels through a red light without so much as a glance to see what's happening around him; he just plunges into the intersection with zero regard for anyone else, it's infuriating. And then you have the driver in the Audi, who basically charged blindly into the mess like an idiot, even though he technically had the green.

Here is the footage from the other angle

Good grief, how can he be at fault when he clearly had the green light? 🤷
He was definitely speeding, sure—but there is absolutely no way he was doing 100 mph like everyone is claiming.

My heart goes out to those who lost their lives, truly, but the idiot over at the Shell station blew right through a red light.

I completely agree with you there. I truly believe—and I think most of us here would concur—that when you approach a traffic light and see that amber glow, you really only have two logical choices: you either accelerate to clear the intersection, or you decelerate and come to a controlled stop. There is this third option, however, which I find absolutely intolerable: those indecisive drivers who creep into the middle of the junction and then just... freeze. They become stuck right in the crosshairs of the intersection, paralyzed by their own hesitation. Honestly, if I happen to be heading in the opposite direction, I occasionally find myself steering toward them just to see exactly how they’ll react to the chaos they've created. 🤣

To clarify my previous point regarding culpability—I wasn't suggesting he was solely responsible for the collision itself, but rather that there is a profound moral weight to the speed at which he was traveling; had he maintained a more reasonable pace, those three lives wouldn't have been lost. Though, I suppose I might be guilty of a certain hypocrisy here, given my own habits behind the wheel; as I mentioned earlier, when I approach a traffic light, I find myself either surging forward to beat the change or braking abruptly to avoid it. My only real grievance with this Audi driver is that he didn't even attempt to moderate his velocity; he simply barreled through, maintaining an excessive speed from the bridge, through the descent, and straight across the intersection. Nevertheless, despite my criticisms, I find myself siding with him once again.

Svatko normalan just speeds up to clear the intersection; the light was still green when he zipped through. Morons run red lights, but these idiots in the SUV clearly have no concept of timing. Even at three in the morning, I’ve never once blown a red light, regardless of whether I’m the only soul on the road...

I don't blame the guy for charging through like a bulldozer at all. These modern traffic lights are actually quite helpful since they flash green to warn you the change is coming, so he could have cleared it easily; instead, the poor man actually hit the brakes the moment he spotted those clowns in the SUV...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: anyone driving a beat-up old sedan should probably be banned from the road entirely for everyone's safety...

Hey everyone, looking at the footage, it seems like this was a standard intersection where cars drive normally (just check out all the other vehicles), but I guess he was definitely doing over 75 mph. Doing that through a city intersection with a traffic light... well, regardless of how the lights were set, he’s probably responsible for this tragedy.

The speed isn't really the point here, what matters is 😁 running a red light is arguably the most egregious violation you can commit on the road. Most of the comments I'm seeing are just variations of "some drunk idiot in a nice car ran over poor kids in a Honda Civic," but those kids ran right through a red light. He could have been doing 50 mph—which, let's be honest, is basically the standard cruising speed for most of us driving through Chicago—and he still would have hit that Civic because he blew through the signal. You can't just blow through a red light and claim you aren't at fault...

I guess you might not really have much to do with this, just wanted to mention that.

Even at eighty miles per hour, the driver—and anyone sitting behind him—wouldn't have walked away from that one.

Sure, he’s liable because he was driving like a maniac—that’s not even up for debate and he needs to answer for it. But if the idiot hadn't run that red light, the accident wouldn't have happened in the first place.

Believe whatever you want, I suppose... But they ran a red light, and now we’re expected to believe they aren't responsible for the crash? Please...

It felt like he just barreled in like a runaway freight train, with zero chance to brake or steer out of it. I guess that’s really what separates an idiot from a decent driver; a real driver knows it's not just about following the rules of the road, but realizing anything could happen at any moment and staying alert.

Honestly, I have no idea why everyone is getting so worked up! In my opinion, you both actually have valid points here. 🤷

Reminds me of that Manchester City captain crash—you know, when he picked up that Indian family in their little purple car and ended up killing two people.

Like Michelle Palmer6 said, they're both at fault—though the one who blew through the red light a bit harder takes more blame. But strictly looking at the law? Only the driver from Pennsylvania is liable for causing the crash.

I’m feeling pretty frustrated because the other side is claiming that driving like a rocket in these conditions is just a minor "infraction," and that if those people hadn't run a red light, there wouldn't have been any issue at all. Honestly, anyone speeding down a street like that in the pitch black is basically driving a lethal weapon. Speed limits exist so drivers actually have a chance to react to emergencies. Instead of that guy Paul who ran the red light, it could have been a dog darting across the road or some larger animal—a friend of mine once hit a deer on the highway outside of Austin, for instance. It could have been wind blowing a box into the lane or anything else. When a car traveling at that speed... 62 milesI guess maybe there's some construction work on the highway that was supposed to be finished by now? 37 milesI guess it might have ended in a total catastrophe if something had happened, especially since that idiot was speeding at over 60 mph.

You can't just go tearing through town like some maniac, for crying out loud. I'm seriously about to post this exact same thing regarding those bikers who treat our quiet residential streets like a damn racetrack.

image

The guy needs to get hit with the absolute maximum penalty allowed by law.

What’s the point? So some grandma can make it across the street while the light is still green? That's literally why we have flashing signals—to give you enough time to slow down and actually stop before you kill someone.

I mean, honestly, only a complete moron would be driving like that right in the middle of downtown... you can clearly see in the video that this guy started braking just before the traffic light, but he still plowed right into them like he was steering a damn tank... I guess you could say someone's life is gone because of this... and look, if the other drivers are responsible for the accident itself, yeah, sure... but this guy? He’s the reason for the fatality. If he had actually followed the rules of the road, maybe things wouldn't have turned out so deadly—or at least the consequences wouldn't be this extreme... maybe he would've had enough time to react differently, who knows? God, it's just a mess of circumstances, maybe this, maybe that... we'll never really know the whole truth.

If he’d just kept it at 80, he would've made the turn and maybe even cleared it... plenty of room there...
