For me, the undisputed king is Assault on Precinct 13. The original, obviously—let's not even touch that remake garbage.
That intro starts with that iconic melody, showing the gang prepping their revenge, then those shots of the city at dawn, the deserted streets, all set to Carpenter’s minimalist score (those 🙏 synths). The day flies by, we see the sunset, and you just *know* something terrible is coming. You don't know what, but you feel it. Then night falls.
Everyone's heading toward that old police station waiting to be shut down...
What I love is the slow burn of the whole thing. There's hardly any dialogue among the gang members; they just want blood.
And I can't forget to mention that, personally, the best melody in the entire film is when Ethan Bishop, the cop, walks into the 13th precinct. It's so melancholic, so simple—it's perfect.
Killer stuff!🙏
It's insane how good a movie can be shot with such a tiny budget. Nowadays, when studios dump tens of millions of dollars into movies, you rarely see anything even remotely close to this. Just goes to show, money isn't everything.
Who are your favorites?

It’s easily in my top 5 movies. Just an incredible piece of work. From the book it's based on to the director, the cast, and obviously that super intense, visually stunning vibe of 1960s America.
Those quick Altman-style cuts...
I haven't watched it in forever, but honestly, this might have been the first movie that actually showed me film could be something special. It's what got me hooked on the whole industry.
The way Leonardo DiCaprio feels like just another character within that layered plot. If I had to pick something else in that same vein, maybe Magnolia and those messy love stories.
Man, there are just so many great cinematic atmospheres out there.
