Well, maybe it’s actually a good thing that Abyssus lets off steam here because, let's not forget, she's basically working for the students 😬 Since you can actually squeeze some useful information out of her famous, rather insulting posts—and considering she's still very young—engaging with the forum might help her develop the social skills needed to become the kind of expert she clearly aims to be 👍 As much as I find her communication style crude or even ridiculous, I can't deny she's cleared up a few things for me. I guess I'd actually miss her if she were gone 🤷

You might have missed this, but the person in question is still just a student; the issue is that she’s misrepresenting herself 😉 But honestly, I don't think anyone is questioning anyone's intelligence. In fact, the whole point of this appeal is exactly what you mentioned: socialization 👍 And that is something only the moderator can regulate, by the way. There are people here who aren't students; in fact, there are quite a few individuals with top-tier academic degrees who still respect the forum rules and communicate politely 🙂 Take Vojky The budo, for example. The man is a PhD, yet he is always helpful and provides legal advice in a cultured manner. Despite being busy with his scientific work, he maintains patience and self-control; he isn't hysterical or rude. So, I see no reason why a single student (who, aside from studying, doesn't have many major responsibilities) couldn't exercise more control. However, since my goal wasn't to call out any specific individual—because I believe the core issue lies with the moderator who allows and even encourages this behavior—I won't dwell on the root cause everyone keeps pointing to. Instead, I'll focus on what needs to be done from a moderation standpoint. 🙂

Hey, Vojky The budo 🙂

Look, if bluerider2 had to address every single complaint about Abyssus... we could probably fill an entire PDF just for the Complaints section 🤷 I get why she deletes stuff or moves it to SIM, or even suggests starting a thread here; honestly, that’s all part of being a moderator.
As for those controversial posts, I imagine everyone would struggle to filter through every single one just to strip out the insults. Besides, even a perfectly clean sentence—meaning, zero literal slurs—can still be loaded with a malicious tone. And then you have to craft a response too. It's a total pain. 😁 😉
Either Abyssus will moderate herself or she'll just leave. 🤷 I doubt bluerider2 can do much to help.

So, according to you, we should just let one person terrorize the majority? I am convinced that decent moderation—starting with warnings and moving to bans—would straighten out a problematic student. After all, that is how this forum functions. If not, then there is no need for Rules or moderators. This isn't some private chat room.

Has there been even a SINGLE warning issued toward her? Has anyone actually seen or read one?

Or does the moderator feel that nothing has been said so vile as to warrant even a simple nudge to suggest a kinder tone?

I believe that is exactly what Sarah Morgan2 is trying to point out—not once has a moderator warned Abyssus about her communication style.

Exactly. In fact, I think Abby herself will benefit the most if she realizes and learns the value of tactful communication—basically, basic manners—especially if she hopes to go into teaching someday. That’s why I intentionally focused this thread on the fundamental issue: the moderation itself, which is actually fueling these problems. After all, Social Science is far too broad an area for a single person to moderate, especially if they're expected to be an expert in every discipline.😉

No, I mean, this kind of topic actually needs to be opened on this sub-forum 👍
Besides, even bluerider2 mentioned she’d love to have a co-moderator; maybe this is an excellent proposal to finally find one.

Anyway, this isn't anyone's private business.

True, 🙂

Social Science folks, we still haven't seen a single actual example of this happening here
you're eventually going to realize that with things looking the way they do, it really just comes down to who you decide to believe

Just so you don't say this complaint went unnoticed: I've read everything you wrote. I agree with some parts, but not others...

The bottom line is that this sub-forum definitely needs another moderator. Both bluerider2 and I know that, but we just haven't found the right candidate yet...

Regarding expertise, none of us moderators demand a resume. Political mods aren't heads of political parties, health mods aren't doctors, and literature mods don't need to have published fourteen books...😉. Besides, finding one person who is an expert in ALL Social Sciences is impossible😬. How many degrees would they need to hold for that?

So, I’m opening the floor here: let's find a new moderator for Social Science! Just keep one thing in mind: the forum editorial board retains the final say on appointments. You can certainly support someone through a show of hands, but we might not approve (that's just a bit of inside info; I suspect this is exactly what we're dealing with 🤷). Still, I'm quite sure that won't happen, and if the community gathered here at Social Science chooses someone, we won't have any major issues with it 🙂

Could you maybe take a look at the posts from Abyssus? It’s the same thing happening across all the subforums. Or, I guess, maybe let the people who are actually complaining handle it. 🤷
By the way, I heard that on the high schoolers, it was deleted—and I think they might have even picked up a penalty for it. 😬

I’m putting forward Sarah Garcia46. Honestly, they would be a shining example of how a top-tier expert can still communicate politely with visitors.👍

Either Abyssus will moderate herself or she'll just leave. 🤷 I doubt bluerider2 can do much to help.

She doesn't even need to respond on behalf of anyone else (whether it's A. or someone else, it doesn't matter)

When someone crosses the line of decency, a moderator should at least warn them.
If they ignore the warning and keep up the same style, it’s time for a card.
For a blatant violation or repeated rudeness, there's a ban.

Does bluerider2 do any of those standard moderation tasks? NO.

The problem with her moderation lies as much in what she does (provoking dissenters, putting words in their mouths, etc.) as in what she DOESN'T DO (she doesn't warn her arrogant favorites, let alone anything more...)

When the Language Advisor split into several threads (which isn't inherently bad), she did it because the situation was about to boil over... Too many dissatisfied people spoke up at once, so she had to scatter those voices to dissipate the tension she caused—tension that threatened her "moderator" (read: monopolistic) control. There were legitimate reasons to split topics before, but she didn't bother until she couldn't handle the "disobedient" ones one by one to make them look like weird outliers or isolated incidents.

Rotten work.

Just one little thing—fresh and sweet:

@ Abyssus
I can't help with that specific request.

Don't go taking Anić's word for it. There’s some real nonsense going on in there.

@Little - Look, my take on Americans is mostly pretty negative, but I don't really get why you're being so harsh. You’re coming at this from the perspective of a student who hasn't even stepped foot on a college campus yet, yet you're bashing someone who actually studied American studies there (though, let's be honest, the quality of the program is debatable). The standard isn't some holy grail; it doesn't matter if it's dictated or not. I've got all sorts of things scribbled in my notebooks, even while I'm busy taking actual notes. If something bugs you, just fix it and move on. The point is, just because you've picked up a few things lately doesn't mean you've mastered all the wisdom in the world. At the end of the day, you're still just applying adjectives based on whatever paradigm you're following.

Look, no matter how paradoxical it might seem, I’m not going to stand by while people trash-talk Americans if they haven't actually slogged through the struggles of the theory / Stamac world code, the massive Old and New, and all that. Honestly, even my colleagues over at FFZG—whom I can't stand because of their total lack of literacy—I still hold in high regard just because of that. You simply can't compare American studies here to what they teach at other universities.

------------

This was just a passing thought, really—something tossed out from a distance. If you dig through hundreds of other posts, you'll run into people being straight-up insulting. It’s all that loud, jittery, aggressive venting, too. You'll see stuff like, "This is elementary school stuff," or "What an absolute joke," or "I don't work on command," and so on, and so forth.

Jerry Roberts15, what you’ve laid out there is honestly top-tier stuff. If everything here was at least operating on that level, we’d actually be getting somewhere. 😉
But honestly, I don't think there's any point in attacking problematic Abby anymore. It’ll just end up looking like some petty personal vendetta or, heaven forbid, actual jealousy toward 🤣, and that's definitely not our goal. I think our admin, Jerry Garcia, has handled the situation. Once we break up the monopoly held by moderator bluerider2, things should finally return to normal. For now, our only job is to back the most qualified candidate for moderator with constructive proposals. Someone who could serve as a solid example—maybe even a role model for Abby herself—to help her socialize and connect with people 🙂during discussions.

Jerry Roberts15, no single post taken out of context within this toxic atmosphere provides an adequate illustration of the situation. Even those threads where that specific group loses their cool—flinging insults and profanity, if we were to dig them all up—don't offer a true picture on their own.

A serious analysis of this state of affairs, backed by actual quotes, would be far too long.... and nobody would bother reading it in detail. Besides, the protagonists involved certainly aren't worth such demanding labor. And even if someone did take it on, they’d just be labeled with a paranoid obsession... Rule 22...

The best illustration is simply the fact that a respectable number of people have gathered here—clearly cultured individuals—all claiming that something is fundamentally wrong.

I'm with you 100% and feel like we've pretty much achieved what we set out to do.
I only brought up that specific example because it was requested, even though it was a very, very mild and almost innocent one... but as far as I'm concerned, the matter is closed. This isn't about personal beef; it's strictly about the way people communicate.👍
