Up the nostril. I mean, it’s basically what 99.99% of kids already do with their fingers anyway. And it's not even every day, maybe just once a week.
Plus, so many parents jam cotton swabs into their kids' ears, which is super unrecommended, yet nobody goes on an online moral crusade about it. On the flip side, cleaning a nose with a swab is actually a suggested method—it's literally printed on every label that says ear cleaning isn't.

Well, they're definitely more reliable than just guessing. They aren't quite as perfect as a PCR, but you can do them at home. People around my way have had pretty good luck with them. Statistically, the accuracy hits around 98%, even for people without symptoms.
I went for a PCR test once with my kids, but I'm probably not doing that again. It's honestly just a hassle for them. I guess I don't really care about the official paperwork and stuff.
